Gold settled at the highest price in almost three weeks on Monday after
renewed worries about the health of Europe's financial system pushed
investors into the perceived safe-haven metal.The most actively traded
contract, for April delivery, rose $12, or 0.8%, to settle at $1,604.60 a
troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile
Exchange, the highest settlement since Feb. 26.Global markets were
rocked by the details released over the weekend about a proposed 10
billion euro ($12.92 billion) bailout of Cyprus by the European
Commission, the European Central Bank and the International
Monetary Fund. The harsh conditions imposed on the Mediterranean
island included a levy on bank deposits of between 3% and 15%.In
response, the euro slumped to a three-month low against the U.S.
dollar, and global equities markets pulled back.
