2. ENGINE OIL SERVICING
In order to ensure safe practices, pilots should be familiar with the
procedures and cautions dealing with servicing the engine oil system.
5. ENGINE OIL SERVICING
• Use only oil that conforms to Spec. (MIL-L-23699).
• Oil should be obtained from a clean sealed can.
•Before shut down run engine for a minimum of 20 seconds with the
propeller in feather selection. This ensures that the maximum amount of
oil is returned to the oil tank.
•Check engine oil level within 30 minutes with the oil temperature as a
minimum above 45 degrees C.
CAUTION: OIL LEVEL ABOVE THE MAX MARK CAN NOT
ALWAYS BE CLEARLY SEEN ON THE SITE GLASS GAUGE. OIL
ABOVE THE MAX MARK CAN POSSIBLY RESULT IN AN
INTERNAL LEAK, OIL SMELL, SMOKE IN THE CABIN AND AN
INTERNAL FIRE.
6. ENGINE OIL SERVICING
• Add engine oil as follows:
• If oil level is below the MAX mark add oil to the required level, never
exceeding the MAX indication nor letting the level drop below MIN or
“ADD 3 MARKS” on the site gauge.
• Engines left overnight may have misleading oil level indications. If
engine did not have level checked after the last flight or the oil
temperature, as a minimum is not above 45 degrees C, an engine run
must be carried out .
• The optimum quantity level when adding oil, is one quart less than
the full mark on the site gauge (1 ADD line).
9. OIL CONSUMPTION MONITORING
• When an oil consumption trend monitoring is conducted the amount
of oil added to bring level on the dipstick or sight glass to MAX is
recorded in graph form. The unit may be lb/hr, kg/hr, quart/hr or liter/hr.
•0.15 liter/hr is maximum oil consumption permissible.
•Oil level check and replenishing must be carried out at intervals
recommended by the manufacturer.
• When carrying out oil system top-up, for the purpose of trend
monitoring, measure and record amount of oil added to top up the level
to the MAX mark.
• Check the number of flight hours since the last top up.
10. OIL CONSUMPTION MONITORING
• Using the following formula, determine the oil consumption rate:
Oil consumption / flight hours
•Plot oil / hour value on a graph
•Oil consumption above maximum permissible, or a sudden or gradual
increase, must be investigated.
