In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. DOCUMENTARY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgq4S
NfYSHs&feature=youtu.be
Uses:
Voice-overs
Vox pops
Archive footage
Non diegetic background music
Direct interview technique
Interview set up (head room and
looking room, relevant mise-en-scene
in background)
Blurred face of bullied teenager so
they remain anonymous
Presenter links
Cutaway clips during interview
3. Challenges:
Doesn’t challenge any codes and conventions
Develops:
I have used text captions within the interview. This
allows the audience to read for themselves and it
therefore keeps engages their attention for longer.
I have also used lighting effects on graphics to
create meaning (e.g. darker lighting on Facebook;
dark uses of Facebook). This helps to visually
represent the 'dark side' of Facebook.
5. Uses:
Complimentary house style
Page numbers
Images
Air date of program
Drop capitals
Pullout quotes
Engaging heading
Lead paragraph
Fact box
Combination of different fonts (e.g. sans serif font
used in heading and serif font used for main body
of text.)
6. Challenges:
Article doesn't go into much depth about the
documentary so it engages the readers and makes
them intrigued about the product. They will
therefore feel encouraged to watch the
documentary to find out more.
Develops:
Idea of allowing audiences to find out more about
the production of the documentary and the
presenters personal thoughts about it.
8. Uses:
Interesting images
Brief information on the product
Two colour advert which is common in newspapers
Eye catching colour scheme
Extra information (website information)
Logo
Persuasive review of product
Challenges:
The image of a person without all of their facial features
is very shocking. Although documentary adverts are
usually shocking and abstract,, this could be considered
too shocking and off putting for readers.
9. Develops:
This advert develops the idea of shocking the
audience to find out more. Audience members will
talk about the shocking advert to their friends. This
in turn creates a sense of viral marketing for the
advert, which will then persuade them to watch the
documentary.
10. CONCLUSION
I have used and challenged the different forms and
conventions of the media products I have created. I
have also tried to develop existing forms to give my
audience products that are interesting and
engaging.
It was important to use, challenge and develop the
codes and conventions of the different products so
the audience would be able to recognise the media
product I had created. This would also help my
audience decode the correct/ preferred message I
was trying to bring across.
