(Computer Systems and Servicing NC II)
LESSON TITLE:
INSTALL AND CONFIGURE OF PERIPHERAL DEVICES
MELCS:
Install Operating System (OS) and drivers for
peripherals / devices. TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-IIa-j-30
FIRST GRADING PERIOD
WEEK 3
Name of Teacher –Writer: Mr. Emerson D. Rebibis

This Self Learning Kit (SLK) is an exploratory course which leads you to
Computer Systems Servicing NC II in order for you to know and gain
more knowledge about the course in improving your skills that will help
you in the near future.
In this Self Learning Kit, it covers the Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELC) that a Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood
Education (TLE) ICT - CSS students like you ought to possess, namely:
CORE COMPETENCIES:
1. Installing and Configuring Computer Systems
2. Setting Up Computer Networks
3. Setting Up Computer Servers
4. Maintaining and Repairing Computer Systems and
Networks
This SLK together with your Written Task Outputs will be
collected every week. You are highly encouraged to accomplish
the tasks on your scheduled time.
3. 3
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. Identify the peripherals/devices that
need drivers.
2. Locate the drivers of certain computer
through online.
3. Check the quality of the work
undertaken in accordance with
established procedures.
Let us check if you can still remember your
lesson in Week 2, that is, Install Operating
System. Match the critical aspects in
installing windows OS in column A to the
reasons in column B.
4. 4
After installing Windows Operating System in
Lesson 2, the next thing you should is to check
the drivers for the peripherals/devices of your
computer to fully complete the function of the
computer. Read carefully the following
information and take note in your notebook.
Column A Column B
“Press any key to boot from
USB…”
1. It is bigger in capacity
Change Boot Option #1 to
Hard Disk Drive
2. if you do not do this it will load
the previous OS of the hard
disk drive
Set the first primary partition to
60% capacity of the hard disk
drive
3. if you do not do this, you will
go back to the message press
any key to boot from USB…
Select the first primary
partition
4. so that it will not boot from
USB
Change Boot Option #1 to
USB
5. this is where you will install
the OS
What Is A Driver?
A driver, or device driver, is a set of files that tells a piece of
hardware how to function by communicating with a computer's
operating system. All pieces of hardware require a driver, from
your internal computer components, such as your graphics card,
to your external peripherals, like a printer.
5. 5
The driver files are designed to work seamlessly with the
specific operating system you have on your PC, so the operating
system typically keeps them updated and running through
automatic updates. Updates are additional downloaded files that
can install on their own to keep everything functioning correctly.
After installing an operating system, you need to check
whether the OS has installed the drivers needed by the
motherboard. To do this, you need to go to the Device Manager.
Device Manager is a Control Panel applet in Microsoft
Windows operating systems. It allows users to view and control the
hardware attached to the computer. When a piece of hardware is
not working, the offending hardware has a question mark symbol
on the device manager.

drivers
6. 6
To locate the device manager, follow these steps:
1. Locate the Device Manager by typing Device Manager in
the search box in the Windows taskbar.
2. Open on the Device Manager link that will show up.
3. Figure 1 shows no device has a driver problem. Figure 2
shows the devices that have missing drivers on them.
Figure 2. Devices with missing drivers
What device need drivers?
Hardware devices that are unknown by the operating
system or that have features that are unknown by the operating
system all require drivers. These devices are: card reader,
controller, modem, motherboard chipset, network card, printer,
scanner, sound card, USB devices, video card, and tape drives.
7. 7
What devices may not need drivers?
Today’s operating systems have a lot of generic drivers that
allow hardware to work at a basic level without needing drivers or
software. However, if that device has features unknown to the
operating system, it will not work without drivers. For example, you
can plug your Epson L210 to your computer with Windows 10 OS
and it will print A4 because that it the default/basic. However, you
cannot print in legal papers or long coupon bond unless you install
the driver of Epson L210.
These devices that do not drivers are: CPU, disc drive, fan,
hard drive, heat sink, joy stick, keyboard, mouse, monitor, power
supply, RAM, speakers, thumb drive, and UPS. However, for
keyboards and mouse with special buttons you need to install the
driver in order to function properly.
What happens if a driver is not installed?
If the appropriate driver is not installed, the device may not
function properly. With some devices, the device may work, but all
of its features may not work. For example, a computer mouse
usually works without drivers, but if it has more buttons than the
traditional mouse, those extra buttons will not work until the drivers
are installed.
Can a driver make my computer do more?
Installing a driver only makes the hardware installed in the
computer function properly. If the correct driver is not installed,
installing the latest driver for the hardware can take full advantage
of the device. However, you cannot install a driver for hardware not
8. 8
installed in the computer and expect it to make your computer
faster or more capable. In other words, installing video card drivers
for a video card that is not installed in the computer does not give
your computer all the capabilities of the video card. With this
example, you’d need the video card hardware as well as the video
card driver to be installed.
Crossword Puzzle: Identify the devices that
need drivers by answering the puzzle and
writing the correct letters inside the box to
form the correct peripheral devices.
9. 9
1. Company: Acer, Type: Notebook, Model: Aspire
ES-575, Operating System: Windows 10 64bit
After installing the operating system, be sure
to check for device drivers in the device
manager. If none of the devices has a
question mark symbol beside it, it means all
the devices has the correct driver.
If one or more peripheral devices has a
question mark symbol beside it, you have to
install the driver, either from the website of a
company or the CD that comes with the
motherboard.
Correct driver is needed in order for the
peripheral device to work effectively.
Incorrect driver for a device will not work
properly.
A. Online Browsing. Locate the following
models of computers and list down the
drivers listed on the website. Write at
least 10 drivers of peripherals/devices
for each model. Write your answer in
your binder filler. RECORDED FOR

B. Take a screenshot inside the Device Manager in your
computer without question mark symbol (refer to Fig.1). Send
the picture to the google classroom to be announced this
week. 5pts for submitted output.
If you do not have a computer/desktop/laptop at home, you
can ask the assistance of your neighbor who has a computer.
If not available, ask the assistance of your barangay
secretary. Your barangay secretary has a computer used in
making reports. Just ask politely.
