Introduction
Riordan Manufacturing is one of the premier players in plastics manufacturing.
They have offices in Pontiac, Michigan, Albany, Georgia, San Jose, California, and
Hangzhou, China. It projects annual earnings of about $46 billion. Riordan
Manufacturing started using a functional human resources information system
(HRIS) in 1992. The system that they use now is part of their financial systems
package to keep up with employee information. Analyzing the HRIS reveals that,
as Riordan’s needs expand, their system needs upgrading. Riordan wants
to use a valid and viable system, so it will upgrade its HRIS system to a more
sophisticated system for HR. Modern technology will let them combine a number
of tools into one application.
Plan
The aim of this report is to is to help Riordan with their HRIS problems by planning
how to install a newer, advanced system. “The primary objective of the analysis
phase is to understand and document the business needs and the processing
requirements of the new system” (Satzinger, Jackson, Burd, & Johnson, para.
26, 2004). When Riordan changes their HRIS, they will also change their financial
system. Right now each of their locations has trouble with their accounting and
financial systems; these problems come about because the locations do not have a
standard system. The new, modern HR system will make sure that each location
can have a high level of compatibility through a standardized operating system.
They will begin to implement the new system in six months, and it will be
operational by next year’s second quarter. Riordan’s HRIS system
will be updated by a developing team, who will come up with a project plan and tell
management what resources they need.
Gathering Project Information
To understand the project goal, the problem’s domain and stakeholders
must be identified. Interviewing different users will pinpoint particular problems in
the system and begin to develop a possible solution. “Requirement elicitation must
focus on the creation of requirements, not design activities, in order to adequately
address users’ concerns and not just developer needs” (Christel & Kang, p.
18, 1992). Sometimes it is an indefinite goal to gather a problem’s
requirements, and it is possible that design language makes the unclear
specifications unverifiable. The following techniques are useful to find specific user
requirements:
• Workshops – facilitating meetings with many stakeholders.
• Surveys – collecting information from stakeholders anonymously.
• Documentation review – using company data to find requirements. Data flow
diagrams can help illustrate the system’s information.
• Prototyping – coming up with models of the project at different stages of
development.
• Observation – developing requirements by observing natural users.
• Focus groups (JAD sessions) – collaborative interviews with a group to find both
questions and solutions.
• Brainstorming – using creativity to develop ideas to fit the system requirement.
System Design
System design will use an iterative approach to create the project in different
phases, and this approach lets designers make smaller changes as the project
develops. One of the most important aspects of design is the ability to validate
specifications and accomplishments. Using data flow diagrams lets stakeholders
see visible models, which help validate project development by providing clear
measurements.
Scope and Feasibility
“The core of an HRMIS is a database system that contains all relevant human
resource information facilitating accessing, maintaining and processing activities”
(Mazen & El-Kayaly, p. 1, nd). The system that Riordan currently uses keeps
its employees 550 employees in a database that combin
