2. Luke 15:1-7 (NIV)
1 Now the tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering
around to hear him. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the
law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with
them." 3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 "Suppose one of
you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not
leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost
sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it
on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and
neighbours together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found
my lost sheep.' 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be
more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than
over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
3. Acts 11:3 (NIV)
3 and said, "You went into the house of uncircumcised
men and ate with them."
4. 1 Corinthians 5:11 (NIV)
11 But now I am writing you that you must not
associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but
is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a
slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man
do not even eat.
5. Galatians 2:12 (NIV)
12 Before certain men came from James, he used to
eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he
began to draw back and separate himself from the
Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged
to the circumcision group.

I obey; therefore I am
accepted
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
I’m accepted; therefore I
obey
7. PHARISEE / Religion
Motivation is based on
fear and insecurity
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
Motivation is based on
grateful joy.
8. PHARISEE / Religion
I obey God in order to get
THINGS from God.
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
I obey God to get God –
to delight and resemble
him
9. PHARISEE / Religion
When circumstances in
my life go wrong , I am
angry at God or myself,
since I believe , like Job’s
friends, that anyone who
is good deserves a
comfortable life.
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
When circumstance in my
life go wrong, I struggle
but I know that while God
may allow this for my
training, He WILL exercise
His Fatherly love within
my trial
10. PHARISEE / Religion
When I’m criticised, I am
furious or devastated
because it is essential for
me to think of myself as a
‘good person’ Threats to
that self-image must be
destroyed at all costs.
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
When I am criticised, I
struggle, but it is not
essential for me to think
of myself as a ‘good
person’. My identity is not
built on my performance
but on God’s love for me
in Christ.
11. PHARISEE / Religion
My prayer life consists
largely of petition and
only heats up when I am
in need. My main
purpose in prayer is to
control circumstances
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
My prayer life consists of
generous stretches of
praise and adoration. My
main purpose is
fellowship with him
12. PHARISEE / Religion
My self-view swings
between two poles. If and
when I am living up to my
standards, I feel confident,
but then I am prone to be
proud and unsympathetic
to people who fail. If and
when I am not living up to
standards, I feel humble but
no confident – I feel like a
failure.
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
My self-view is not based
on a view of myself as a
moral achiever. In Christ I
am at once sinful and lost,
yet accepted. I am so bad
he HAD to dies for me, and
so loved he was GLAD to
die for me. This leads me to
deeper humility as well as
deeper confidence, without
either snivelling or
swaggering.
13. PHARISEE / Religion
My identity and self-worth
are based mainly on how
hard I work or how moral I
am, so I MUST look down
on those I perceive as lazy
or immoral. I disdain and
feel superior to others.
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
My identity and self-worth
are centered on the One
who died for his enemies,
including me. Only by sheer
grace am I what I am, so I
CAN’T look down on those
who believe or praise
something different from
me. I have no inner need to
win arguments
14. PHARISEE / Religion
Since I look to my pedigree
or performance for my
spiritual acceptability, my
head manufactures idols –
talents, moral record,
personal discipline, social
status etc. They are my
main hope, meaning,
happiness, security and
significance, whatever I say
I believe about God.
GOSPEL / Father’s Heart
I have many good things in
my life – family, work etc.
but none of these good
things are ultimate things o
me. I don’t absolutely HAVE
to have them so there is a
limit to how much anxiety,
bitterness and despair they
can inflict on me when they
are threatened and lost.
