What kind of media institution might
distribute your music magazine and
why?
Due to our magazine being a new publication, having the right
distributor is an important part when launching a magazine. The chosen
distributor would need to have the ability to reach out to our chosen
social group and audience. Another thing we would be looking for in a
distributor is having a good reputation and being trustworthy when
distributing our magazine to the media. I will examine two distributor
companies I have previously research to weigh out which company
would be best for our magazine. I will compare Bauer and IPC media.
Bauer Media
Why I would consider to pick Bauer:
Bauer Media produces over 300 magazines in 15
countries, as well as online, on television, and on
radio stations. This would mean Bauer has a large
and good platform to create an awareness around
out magazine.
Another positive of Bauer is that it has published
music magazines like Q, Kerrang! and gossip
magazines such as Heat. This is an advantage
as we have used Q magazine as in inspiration
during our production of our magazine. Our genre
would fit well into the company as they cover a
wide range of music. As Q is a similar genre to
our magazine this will mean Bauer already has
covered that social group and audience we are
looking to target.
Due to Bauer being a multi-media company this
means we could even branch our
magazine/company into other areas, including
radio. As our magazine is centered around music
and indie rock this would be an advantage to us.
Disadvantages:
A problem with choosing Bauer Media could be
that due to the company producer huge magazine
publications such as Kerrang and Q, this could
mean our magazine could be out-shined. This
could also mean less money and time is spent
working on our magazine and this would mean we
wouldn’t produce a quality magazine.
IPC Media
Why we would consider IPC Media:
IPC produces 60 magazines and this company has
the ability to approach a wide audience.
Within their magazines, the company are able to
read two-thirds of woman in UK and 42% of men.
This is an advantage to our magazine as our
audience is equally balanced between men and
women.
A music magazine the have produced in NME
which is very similar to our magazine, we had also
taken inspiration from NME with our logo. This
means this company has attracted the same type
of audience we are looking for. This means our
magazine will most likely to be distributed by IPC
Media easily. There isn't a large amount of
magazines they distribute which are similar to our
indie rock magazine, therefore our magazine will
be able to stand out. The company would also
possibly benefit by branching out with out
magazine.
Disadvantages:
Due to also publishing magazines like Country Life and Whats
On Tv, this means there isn't many similar magazines they
publish like our indie rock magazine. This could mean they lack
experience working with this genre.
To conclude..
I have decided to go with Bauer Media Company to
distribute my magazine. Both magazines would easily
work well with out magazine and genre of our magazine,
as they both have created a good audience for rock/indie
rock. I think Bauer will be the best decision for our
magazine as they have lots of successful magazines and
brands, they also would provide other platforms for our
brand. Whereas IPC may lack experience despite
supplying the very successful NME magazine. Overall I
think Bauer will be the best choice and provide us with
lots of insight into what makes a professional and
successful music magazine. I think our audience and
social group will already be familiar with magazines such
as Q and Kerrang! This will help us reach out to a wider
audience and hopefully fans of those magazines will be
interested in our indie rock magazine.
