  1. Understanding the Project is the most important, critical and obvious step to a good project manager . In most cases, all the details are not known but at the same time the PM is charged with adequate planning. Knowing the stakeholders, sponsors and major parties of the project AND each party’s expectations needs to be well documented and understood. Adequate communication to these parties is most important.
