1. My Vision
My mission is to create value for business and society with a post-IE
employer like Cemex. Beyond selling products, Cemex engages in
sustainability/social efforts including “Patrimonio Hoy,” which benefits low-
income Mexico communities.
Post-IE I would seek to join the strategy, marketing, or
operations division, working to rise to President of the South
American region. Brazil’s building-material market is estimated
at $50 billion, with large opportunity to drive socially and
environmentally responsible growth. IE’s mission of creating
business leaders who are true agents of global change fits my
vision perfectly. Next I present some challenges I will face.
2. Challenge 1: Improving Construction
Industry Talent/Practices
The Challenge: While demand grows within Latin American construction,
talent remain stagnant, especially with regard to technology, business,
and sustainability. Moreover, many companies and professionals aren’t
open to new practices, especially more universal ones.
3. Challenge 1: Improving Construction
Industry Talent/Practices
The Solution: Better alliances among companies, vocational training
schools, business programs, and even countries can boost skill levels
through customized education and feeder programs, along with more
standardized industry practices/policies and technology transfer.
At Argamassa Brasil, when
we close a deal with a new
construction company
client, we offer free
technical training for their
staff.
4. Challenge 1: Improving Construction
Industry Talent/Practices
How IE Can Help: I will learn best practices across cultures from IE
classmates and alumni (18% are from energy, construction, and real
estate, second only to financial services), bringing these to my future
career. IE’s 89% international student proportion (from 72 different
countries) will ensure I learn global practices to help drive change.
5. Challenge 2: Rising Global Competition
The Challenge: China and other countries are fielding more and more
construction industry competitors offering very low prices.
The Solution: Rather than engaging in price wars, it’s best to use careful
strategy and a focus on employees/sustainability to drive long-term
success (over short-term results)
How IE Can Help: IE strategy classes like Business, Government and
Society will be very valuable. Through EMZINGO, I will work on social
impact consultancy projects and leadership development activities that will
help me become a highly responsible and effective leader.
6. Challenge 3: Environmental Sustainability
The Challenge: Securing, transporting, and processing raw materials
always creates environmental challenges, especially in construction.
The Solution: Companies need to embrace their role in reducing
environmental damage and increasing sustainability, through a combination
of corporate policy and government regulation.
How IE Can Help: Along with rich classroom conversations, I will be a lead
member of IE Net Impact, helping to create a more socially and
environmentally sustainable world by promoting dialogue, developing best
practices, and supporting responsible corporate leadership.
