Over the years, Dr. Vivek Baliga has been a supporter of a variety of charities, devoting work, time, and resources to several worthy causes. He has been a participant of the annual Bupa Great Manchester Run every year since 2007, raising money for The Desk and Chair Foundation, a charity based in the United Kingdom. Founded by Indian immigrants who grew up in Tanzania, the foundation’s mission is to assist needy Tanzanian communities with resources for education, clean water, burials, medical treatment, and other necessities. Dr. Vivek Baliga has also participated in the Edinburgh Run in 2006 and the Sherwood Forest Run in 2009. A native of India, Dr. Vivek Baliga attended the Sri Aurobindo Memorial School in Bangalore, India. The school, known for its high-quality education, devotes portions of the day to collective spiritual practice and has a meditation hall. Dr. Baliga continued his education at the pre-university level at the National College Jayanagar where he studied science for one year. He went on to the Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Mangalore, earning his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), a medical degree equivalent to the American MD. Dr. Vivek Baliga currently is pursuing a PhD in cardiovascular research at the University of Leeds in the UK. Some of Dr. Baliga’s medically related charitable activities include support for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society in the UK and the Great Ormond Street Hospital, a leading children’s hospital. Dr. Vivek Baliga was also part of a team of doctors who provided malaria prevention education to schoolteachers and children in Mangalore, India. Dr. Baliga has always been athletic. In addition to running, he plays badminton at Leeds and was once a badminton champion in his undergraduate career. He also played for the basketball teams in medical school and at the Sri Aurobindo school. A music lover, Dr. Vivek Baliga likes to deejay at hospital events and mix his own music albums.
