Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma),
it also contains small solid components (red cells,
white cells, and platelets.)
The platelets are best known for their
importance in clotting blood.
However, platelets also contain hundreds of
proteins called growth factors which are very
important in the healing of injuries.
WHAT EXACTLY IS PRP?

PRP is plasma with
many more platelets
than what is typically
found in blood.
The concentration of
platelets — and,
thereby, the
concentration of
growth factors — can
be 5 to 10 times greater
(or richer) than usual.

To develop a PRP preparation,
blood must first be drawn from a
patient.
The platelets are separated from
other blood cells and their
concentration is increased during
a process called centrifugation.
Then the increased concentration
of platelets is combined with the
remaining blood.

COMPOSITION
There are four general categories of preparation of PRP
based on its leukocyte and fibrin content: leukocyte-rich
PRP (L-PRP), leukocyte reduced PRP (P-PRP; leukocyte
reduced or pure PRP), leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin and
pure platelet-rich fibrin.
The efficacy of certain growth factors in healing various
injuries and the concentrations of these growth factors
found within PRP are the theoretical basis for the use of
PRP in tissue repair.

The growth factors and other cytokines present in PRP
include:
platelet-derived growth factor
transforming growth factor beta
fibroblast growth factor
insulin-like growth factor 1
insulin-like growth factor 2
vascular endothelial growth factor
epidermal growth factor
Interleukin 8

Because PRP involves injecting a substance into the skin,
there are potential side effects.
PRP is autologous, which means it contains substances
that come directly from your own body.
This reduces the risks for an allergic reaction that can
occur from injecting other medications, such as cortisone
or hyaluronic acid.
SIDE EFFECTS

However, there are risks from the injection itself, including:
infection
nerve injuries
pain at the injection site
tissue damage
You should discuss these potential risks with your doctor,
as well as the steps your doctor will take to minimize these
risks.

PRP therapy process
PRP therapy is a three-step process. Most PRP therapy
requires three treatments 4–6 weeks apart.
Maintenance treatments are required every 4–6 months.
Step 1
Your blood is drawn — typically from your arm — and put
into a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly to separate
fluids of different densities).

PRP is injected into areas of the scalp that need
increased hair growth.

Step 2
After about 10 minutes in the centrifuge, your blood will
have separated into in three layers:
platelet-poor plasma
platelet-rich plasma
red blood cells
Step 3
The platelet-rich plasma is drawn up into a syringe and
then injected into areas of the scalp that need increased
hair growth.

WHAT TYPES OF HAIR LOSS
DOES PRP TREAT?
Although PRP can be a
treatment option for any type of
hair loss, it's most commonly
used for people dealing with
androgenic alopecia (male and
female pattern hair loss),
and alopecia areata.

HOW FAST DOES HAIR GROW BACK?
“It depends on the etiology and how long the hair has
been gone from the area,"
"For example, if you have alopecia caused by
stress, pregnancy, or another trauma and treat it right
away, there's a greater chance that the hair follicles will
be stimulated and the hair will grow back.
However, I've had male patients who have had hair
loss for a while and have seen some small hair regrowth
when I've injected them. Also, the hair that they do have
has gotten thicker."

The hair growth cycle is also a factor.
Hair has a dormant period, a fast growth period, and
then sheds.
These three stages repeat themselves.
"One of the many reasons you want to do a number of
sessions that are spread out is because you want to hit
all of the hair follicles when they're coming out of the
dormant stage and are ready to grow," .

Typically, hair loss patients will see the most results in 3-6
months.
While studies have shown great results, just like any hair
loss treatment, there isn't a 100 percent guarantee that it
will work.
To avoid doing anything that will be detrimental to new hair
growth, Dr Rajat says avoiding chemical hair treatments
during the PRP treatment process.
He also recommends not using any hair products that
contain sulfates.

Because PRP therapy involves injecting your own blood
into your scalp, you aren’t at risk for getting a
communicable disease.
Still, any therapy that involves injections always carries a
risk of side effects such as:
•injury to blood vessels or nerves
•infection
•Calcification at the injection points
•scar tissue
There’s also the chance that you could have a negative
reaction to the anesthetic used in the therapy.
PRP for hair loss side effects

Risks of PRP for hair loss
Be sure to report all medications you’re on before the
procedure including supplements and herbs.
When you go for your initial consultation, many providers
will recommend against PRP for hair loss if you:
•are on blood thinners
•are a heavy smoker
•have a history of alcohol or drug misuse

You might also be rejected for treatment if you’ve been
diagnosed with:
•acute or chronic infections
•cancer
•chronic liver disease
•chronic skin disease
•hypofibrinogenemia
•metabolic disorder
•platelet dysfunction syndromes
•systemic disorder
•low platelet count
•thyroid disease

those patients wanting a more aggressive nonsurgical
approach to treatment.
