2. Today is World TB Day 2018
•World TB Day, falling on March 24th each year, is
designed to build public awareness that
tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of
the world, causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-
half million people each year, mostly in developing
countries. It commemorates the day in 1882 when
Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community
by announcing that he had discovered the cause of
tuberculosis, the TB bacillus.

3. History of World TB Day
• On March 24, 1882, Dr. Robert
Koch announced the discovery of
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the
bacteria that causes tuberculosis
(TB). During this time, TB killed one
out of every seven people living in
the United States and Europe. Dr.
Koch’s discovery was the most
important step taken toward the
control and elimination of this
deadly disease. A century later,
March 24 was designated World TB
Day: a day to educate the public
about the impact of TB around the
world

4. Theme of World TB Day 2018
• The theme of World TB Day 2018 - “Wanted: Leaders
for a TB-free world”- focuses on building
commitment to end TB, not only at the political level
with Heads of State and Ministers of Health, but at
all levels from Mayors, Governors, parliamentarians
and community leaders, to people affected with TB,
civil society advocates, health workers, doctors or
nurses, NGOs and other partners. All can be leaders
of efforts to end TB in their own work or terrain

5. 2018 is a critical year – TO FIGHT TB
• 2018 is a critical year as we
have an historical window of
opportunity to really make
huge steps towards ending
TB. We need everyone from
the tiniest village to the
biggest capital come together,
commit and act to end TB,”
“We owe this to us and future
generations. Enough is
enough! We must end TB!

6. World TB Day on March 24
• World TB Day on March 24 to
raise public awareness about the
devastating health, social and
economic consequences of
tuberculosis (TB) and to step up
efforts to end the global TB
epidemic. The date marks the day
in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch
announced that he had discovered
the bacterium that causes TB,
which opened the way towards
diagnosing and curing this
disease.

7. TB continues to be the top infectious killer
• Despite significant progress
over the last decades, TB
continues to be the top
infectious killer worldwide,
claiming over 4 500 lives a
day. The emergence of
multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-
TB) poses a major health
security threat and could risk
gains made in the fight
against TB.

8. WHO NEED THE ATTENTION
• These include: migrants, refugees,
ethnic minorities, miners and
others working and living in risk-
prone settings, the elderly,
marginalized women and children
in many settings etc. Factors such as
malnutrition, poor housing and
sanitation, compounded by other
risk factors such as tobacco and
alcohol use and diabetes, affect
vulnerability to TB and access to
care

9. TB END STRATEGY
• The strategy aims to end
the global TB epidemic,
with targets to reduce TB
deaths by 95% and to cut
new cases by 90% between
2015 and 2035, and to
ensure that no family is
burdened with catastrophic
expenses due to TB.

10. TB STILL A GREAT KILLER
•Despite significant
progress over the last
decades, TB continues to
be the top infectious killer
worldwide, claiming over
4,500 lives a day. The
emergence of drug-
resistant TB poses a major
health threat and could
put at risk the gains made
in efforts to End TB!

11. Join our yearly campaign ‘Light up
the World for TB’
• World TB Day is an
opportunity for people
everywhere to join this fight
by helping to educate others
about TB and by urging
governments to take action.
Now is the time to join the
global movement in making a
powerful statement and show
solidarity.

12. What does it take? On
WORLD TB DAY
• Together we can turn the world
RED on World TB Day to shine a
light on devastating conditions.
We kindly challenge all our
partners to work with
authorities in cities across the
world to light up their
landmarks in red on 24 March
2018 to show their commitment
towards ending TB.

14. Increase in multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) and
even extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB)
• Worryingly, there is also an
increase in multi-drug
resistant TB (MDR-TB) and
even extensively drug-
resistant TB (XDR-TB) which
means that the bacteria
causing some people's
disease fails to respond to
conventional treatment.
3/24/2018 Dr.T.V.Rao MD@ WWORLD TB DAY 14
15. NEED FOR EXTENSIVE THERAPY IN TB
• The extensive therapy
necessary to treat these
people is very expensive, can
produce adverse drug
reactions and must be taken
for up to 2 years. Death rates
of people with MDR-TB are
much higher than other forms
of the disease. For example,
in 2010, about 440,000
people fell ill with MDR-TB
and 150,000 died (34 per
cent)
