WHY MICROBIOLOGISTS TO BE COMPETENT? IN THE CLINICAL CONTEXT
1. WHY MICROBIOLOGISTS TO BE COMPETENT?
IN THE CLINICAL CONTEXT
Dr.T.V.Rao MD
it has been realized and stressed that much of our Medical education has become theoretical and
less of practical and skill based training, I am confident to say that Medical Microbiology is at the
verge of colipase and losing confidence of the clinicians, very few merited people join to be
postgraduate, as few professors have any competency to train the MD graduates, and the
postgraduates have become self-learners without the supervision of senior teachers, and become
arrogant with little knowledge and more ignorance like their own teachers, I bold to say many
Medical and highly qualified microbiologists are killing the departments with egoism rather than
learning methods to identify and kill the superbugs, I told at many places that Microbiology needs
coordination at many stages, rather than the importance few seniors, if you think seriously the role
of the Professors is least except to the departments staff and subordinates to put them to the right
scientific direction. The matter have much degenerated after the emergence of many private
medical colleges, and with few Senior microbiologists at greater demand, I am certain to say there is
no development in the last 2 decades, fueled by the incompetency of the seniors and professors
they only continue to be examiners rather than training the post graduates, and many find least
working facilities are most enjoyable Time. Students are too happy to pass the examination rather
than learn any critical matters, If one is sincere the matters are diluted with politics of the
incompetent people so the profession suffers, Unless there is some deep concerns are put forward
the post graduate education in Medical microbiology needs a revamp left with postgraduates with
no competency, as private Managements are least bothered and governments have no funds and >
90% of the infectious diseases treated on trial and error basis without any help from the diagnostic
laboratories, in this context it is impossible to implement the Antibiotic policy which is much
needed, If I talk the truth I may be uncivilized in the present society where conflicts of interest are
much more than the appreciation of the true facts, even the teachers stoop to any level to meet
their personal comforts in evading the work, As it stands today many corporate sector and even
good teaching intuitions are switching to newer technologies and technicians and technologists
dominate the situation unless we have an improve the practicality of the MD degrees awarded by
many substandard Institutes, Many MDβs are just becoming parrots to repeat few words to
undergraduate students, losing the perception of the Modern hospitals in health care, costing the
life with inability to prevent and treat the Infectious diseases, then, β¦β¦β¦?
WHAT IS OUR ROLE TO BE COMPETENT - To be a Medial microbiologist, one need general
intellectual and practical skills and expertise in specific scientific skills required by the discipline?
ability to simulate conditions and organisms using computers, advanced computation on computers
and the design of industrial and pharmaceutical products using both lab equipment and computer
design programs. This skill development is an ongoing challenge as the tools available for
sophisticated lab work are constantly refined and upgraded. I wish the Youngsters with look into
ABIS system how many organism are prevailing to infect the humans and imagine how little we are
doing.
OUR PRACTIAL WORK INCLUDE TO BE PRECISE AND ACCURATE- Successful microbiology work
demands reliable precision in identifying microbes, observing their characteristics and behavior,
applying biological theory to observations and drawing accurate conclusions based on biological
2. data, known facts and concepts, original research and existing research. An ability to identify--
quickly and accurately--what the microscope reveals is critical, as is the skill of making connections
and understanding the potential applications of discoveries in the laboratory, find the merging
methods in diagnosis.
Research and Communication Skills - A microbiologist needs to be both brilliant and methodical. An
ability to think critically and analytically is a prerequisite, as is an advanced understanding and
knowledge of computers. Microbiologists must be experts at working with statistics and must stay
abreast of developments in statistical techniques. They need the patience to examine every aspect
of a problem or solution. They have to be familiar with the literature in their field and confident in
conducting detailed searches of white papers, journal articles and other published texts relating to
their projects. Communicating the results of their work effectively means that microbiologists also
should have polished writing, and even speaking, skills in order to present concise and clear reports
to peers and the wider public
TO BE A SUCCESUFL MICROBIOLOGIST General skills in project management, time management,
working in small teams under deadline pressure, working independently with minimal supervision
and being able to interact productively with a variety of people are extremely useful attributes for a
microbiologist and are good predictors of professional success, Every teaching institute should have
training facilities to Medical and Non medically oriented graduates and post graduates as we can
improve our departments with younger generation people who care interested learn the matters
faster.
LABORATORY SAFTEY We are given less place the people who build the laboratories have no idea
about the Biosafety the matters are left to Non-Medical people and the departments will be great
burden to the future of the Institute, however if you are the planning stage think first about the
biosafety rather the future research in the Institution, Microbiology labs are subject to the most
stringent safety regulations and practices, because the work frequently involves hazardous
substances as chemicals and highly infective materials and tissues. Hence, microbiologists must first
master rigorous health and protective laboratory practices to ensure a sterile work environment and
prevent the accidental release of potentially disease-causing organisms or the contamination of
sensitive experiments.
We should adopt to new circumstances the final skill every great leader should possess is arguably
the most important: adaptability. In this tough economic climate, in the era of privatization with
unsolvable work place challenges the ability to remain flexible and roll with the proverbial punches is
one attribute many effective leaders are utilizing more often to grow in life, follow the Darwinβs
theory Far and away, one skill every great leader should possess is a clear vision and an ability to set
manageable and realistic goals. You must be able to provide those under you with direction and lay
out the steps necessary to achieve a result in a set amount of time or we are not lost in the system
we work,
To live in the system be a good bench worker and a clinical Microbiologist
The Medical Council of India should consider that Medical Microbiology course should have 1 year
clinical orientation in the Infectious diseases associated with Hospital clinical practice or else it is
certain to perish with Time of developments in Hospital practices and emerging demands.
TO LIVE IN THE SYSTEM WE CANNOT BE SILENT SPECTATROS TO
THE EVETNS, OR YOU ARE IGNORED IN THE SYSTEM WE LIVE
