Soon after the attack on Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7,
1941, President Roosevelt declared
war on Japan. The United States now
entered World War II. On February
19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed
Executive Order 9066, which allowed
military leaders to exclude people
from declared military areas. This
began the removal of approximately
120,000 Japanese-Americans from
the Pacific Coast. Was this a military
necessity?

in an internment camp. You were born in California and
are therefore a legal resident and citizen of the United
States.
1. Write a letter to President Roosevelt that includes the
following points:
• Explain your view of Executive Order #9066.
• Describe how your life has been changed by this order.
• Tell what you would do during this war if you were not
restricted to the internment camp.
