Joshua 5:1, Their Hearts Melted
• NAU Joshua 5:1 Now it came about when all the kings of
the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and
all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard
how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before
the sons of Israel until they had crossed, that their hearts
melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because
of the sons of Israel.
• NAU Joshua 2:11 "When we heard it, our hearts melted
and no courage remained in any man any longer because of
you; for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and
on earth beneath.

Future Hearts Will Melt
• NAS Isaiah 13:1 The oracle concerning Babylon… 4 A sound
of tumult … Of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts
is mustering the army for battle. 5 … To destroy the whole
land. 6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as
destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore all hands will fall
limp, And every man's heart will melt. 8 And they will be
terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will
writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another
in astonishment, Their faces aflame. 9 Behold, the day of
the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To
make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its
sinners from it [not yet!].

Joshua 5:2, Flint Knives
• NAU Joshua 5:2 At that time the LORD said to
Joshua, "Make for yourself flint knives and
circumcise again the sons of Israel the second
time.”
• I read about a surgeon who bow hunts and
learn to chip flint arrowheads for hunting. He
used flint knives for surgery on humans. He
said they were sharper and more sterile than
scalpels.

Joshua 5:5, Wikipedia Says…
• “According to Genesis, God told Abraham to circumcise himself, his
household and his slaves as an everlasting covenant in their flesh, see also
Abrahamic Covenant. Those who were not circumcised were to be "cut off"
from their people (Genesis 17:10–14). Covenants in biblical times were
often sealed by severing an animal, with the implication that the party who
breaks the covenant will suffer a similar fate. In Hebrew, the verb meaning
to seal a covenant translates literally as "to cut". It is presumed by Jewish
scholars that the removal of the foreskin symbolically represents such a
sealing of the covenant.[15] Moses might not have been circumcised; his
sons were not, nor were some of his followers (Joshua 5: 4–7). Moses's
wife Zipporah may have circumcised their son when God threatened to kill
Moses (...kill Moses son - considering Gen 17:14) (Exodus 4: 24–26).”
• This quote “Moses might not have been circumcised” goes against…
• Joshua 5:5 For all the people who came out were circumcised, but all the
people who were born in the wilderness along the way as they came out of
Egypt had not been circumcised.

Joshua 5:6, Vineyard
• NAU Joshua 5:6 For the sons of Israel walked forty
years in the wilderness, until all the nation, that is,
the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished
because they did not listen to the voice of the LORD,
to whom the LORD had sworn that He would not let
them see the land which the LORD had sworn to their
fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and
honey.
• We are entering into the land of milk and honey, I
thought it was interesting that the book of Joshua
does not have one use of the word “vineyard”

Joshua 5:7, Circumcised
• NAU Joshua 5:7 …they had not circumcised them
along the way. [40 yrs!]
• NAU Joshua 5:8 …until they were healed.
• Gen 34:24…every male was circumcised…25…on
the third day, when they were in pain…
• NAU Joshua 5:9 Then the LORD said to Joshua,
"Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt
from you." So the name of that place is called
Gilgal [1537, Gilgal, “rolling,” circle (of stones)] to this day.

Joshua 5:10, Kept The Passover
• NAU Joshua 5:10 While the sons of Israel
camped at Gilgal they observed the Passover
on the evening of the fourteenth day of the
month on the desert plains of Jericho.
• NAU Exodus 12:6 'You shall keep it until the
fourteenth day of the same month, then the
whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is
to kill it at twilight.

Joshua 5:12, The Manna Ceased
• NAU Joshua 5:11 On the day after the Passover, on that very day,
they ate some of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and
parched grain. 12 The manna ceased on the day after they had
eaten some of the produce of the land, so that the sons of Israel no
longer had manna, but they ate some of the yield of the land of
Canaan during that year.

until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they
came to the border of the land of Canaan.

commands respect, and receives it.

• Where ever “the angel of the LORD”, the
captain of the LORD’S host, is standing is holy.
Even the ground is holy.
• This is never said of an angel, a created being,
only the creator of all things, God.

Joshua 6:3
March Around The City
• NAU Joshua 6:3 "You shall march around the
city, all the men of war circling the city once.
You shall do so for six days.
• Nelson Study Bible, Page 362, says," The site of
Jericho measured less than half a mile in
circumference, only about 7 acres, so the
march around the city would have been
completed quickly…"

Joshua 6:4, “seven”
• NAU Joshua 6:4 "Also seven priests shall carry
seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark;
then on the seventh day you shall march
around the city seven times, and the priests
shall blow the trumpets.
• Chapter 6 uses the word “seven” a total of 11
X’s. “seven” is important in this chapter; 7
priests, trumpets, times, days.

Who Is The Lord Of The Sabbath?
• Joshua 6:4 …priests shall carry… the ark; then on
the seventh day…seven times…
• Matthew 12:8 "For the Son of Man is Lord of the
Sabbath.
• The Lord commanded that;
• The priests lead this battle
• The Ark leads the procession into battle
• The LORD commanded 7 times as much work to be
done on the Sabbath.

Joshua 6:10, Silence
• Joshua 6:10 But Joshua commanded the people, saying,
"You shall not shout nor let your voice be heard nor let a
word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you,
'Shout!' Then you shall shout!"

• Jerusalem Inspiration, “Music has always played a significant role in
the Bible. The earliest instruments are mentioned in the Book of
Genesis (4:21). Moses sings a great song of gratitude after the
splitting of the sea, and Israel sings a similar song after being saved
from peril in the desert (Numbers 21:17). Priests and Levites use
instruments on holidays as well as to signal important meetings for
the camp. Elisha asks for a harpist in order to receive the divine word
(II Kings 3:15). But above all, King David is the musician par excellence.
David is introduced as a singer who would play his instrument to
soothe the soul of Saul (I Samuel 16:23). He composes music, writes
psalms and even invents new instruments to be used in the Temple
(see I Chronicles 23:5). One of the best-known musical instruments in
the Jewish tradition is the 'shofar', or ram's horn. It is blown to
welcome the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashana)…”

Joshua 6:20, Assuming the Worst

• “A new pastor decided to visit the children's Sunday school. The
teacher introduced him and said, "Pastor, this morning we're studying
Joshua.” "That's wonderful," said the new pastor, "Let's see what
you're learning. Who tore down the walls of Jericho?" Little Johnny
shyly raised hand and offered, "Pastor, I didn't do it.” Taken aback the
pastor asked, "Come on, now, who tore down the walls of
Jericho?" The teacher, interrupting, said, "Pastor, little Johnny's a
good boy. If he says he didn't do it, I believe he didn't do
it." Flustered, the pastor went to the Sunday school director and
related the story to him. The director, looking worried, explained,
"Well, sir, we've had some problems with Johnny before. Let me talk
to him and see what we can do." Really bothered now by the
answers of the teacher and the director, the new pastor approached
the deacons and related the whole story, including the responses of
the teacher and the director. A white-haired gentleman thoughtfully
stroked his chin and said,
• "Well, Pastor, I move we just take the money from the general fund to
pay for the walls and leave it at that."

• God can use our weakness as well as our strengths.
MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY
• We tend to think that if we are strong in an area, God could really use us for His kingdom. But the
Bible is full of examples where God specifically used a weakness to show His strength.
• Moses was a poor speaker.Then Moses said to the LORD, "Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent,
neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech
and slow of tongue." — Exodus 4:10 Yet God used him mightily as a spokesperson on Israel's
behalf.
• Peter, John and James were hot-headed and impulsive.James, the son of Zebedee, and John the
brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, "Sons of Thunder") —Mark
3:17 Yet God used them to be patient with the building of the early church.
• So rather than look only at your strengths as tools God could use, broaden your thinking to include
ANYTHING God may want to use from your life, including your weaknesses.

Joshua 6:26, Foundations Are Important
