University of Puerto Rico
Cayey Campus
Jessica Díaz Rivera
Prof. Elena Gonzalez
Laboratory # 6: Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is the application of computer technology to the management of biological information. With it you can determine the sequence of the entire human genome. Data bases are useful to study evolution, determine mutations, or to study and create proteins. Our assignment was to compare the sequences of different organisms as a research team. A group of scientists had analyzed Rhesus monkeys DNA (Macaca mulatta) and one of them was working on DNA illegally derived from the Golden Lion Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) an endangered primate. I had to use the sequence data to determine the guilt or innocence of the staff members by using the NCBI page. I used all the sequences (DNA samples) of the scientists to compare with the sequence of the Golden Lion Tamarin, to determine which of them was doing illegal research. At the end, we were able to determine that sequence number two was working with the illegal organism. The sequence has 100% of maximum identity (nucleotides) and 100% of Query coverage (DNA bases). Through this mean, we discovered who the guilty staff member was.
