1. Ivan J. Garcia
RISE Program
Bioinformatics:
Bioinformatics was a workshop provided by Dr. Roman. By definition bioinformatics is the application of statistics and computer science’s to biology. It is very useful for DNA sequencing and for comparing genes and genomes of different beings or similar beings of the same species. During this workshop we had to sequence the DNA of a chicken and of a plant, in order to compare them and find out what their genome was. We used a NIH website in order to look up these genomes and sequences. Afterwards we blasted them in order to get even more information and reasonable answers for the questions that were provided by Dr. Roman.
Bioinformatics is a widely used field in biology and genetics. It is very useful for sequencing DNA and comparing two DNA samples. Other than DNA, bioinformatics can also sequence proteins and even perform models for the selected proteins. Every time a new species is discovered or a new DNA sequence is revealed, it is most likely transmitted into the DNA banks of bioinformatics programs and systems. Many investigations related to biology will include the use of bioinformatics. For many reasons, bioinformatics is a very useful tool in the field of biology and genetics.
