Background Information
   Founded October 3, 1887 in Tallahassee,
    Florida
   1950: Granted University status
   FAMU remains the only historically black
    university in the eleven member State
    University System of Florida.
   Marching Band is called the Marching 100
Hazing & Death
   Band member, Robert Champion was hazed in
    an act called “Crossing Bus „C‟”
   Beaten by band mates with their instruments,
    feet and hands
   Champion was found lifeless on bus and
    pronounced dead at hospital
   13 band members received criminal charges
Organizational Response to
Crisis
   Band suspended and band director is fired
   President of FAMU retires
   FAMU insists that they are not responsible for
    Champion‟s death
   Only FAMU students can play in band
   Hired independent board to investigate hazing
    allegations
