âIf so be that ye have heard Him, and have been taught by
Him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the
former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according
to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your
mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is
created in righteousness and true holiness.â
- Ephesians 4:21-24
3. GOALS: SOCIAL MEDIA
1. Active protection from threats is
important.
- Proactively understand the threat.
- Carefully evaluate our weakness.
- Thoughtfully implement protections.
2. Active nurturing towards the Gospel is
essential.
- Decisively warn against what is anti-Gospel.
- Enthusiastically communicate the Gospel.
4. ACTIVE PROTECTION FROM THREATS
IS IMPORTANT (MATT. 10:16)
Proactively understand the threat:
Threats can come from others:
âBehold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of
wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents,â - Matt. 10:16
How do we do our best to avoid external threats?
1. Internet filters:
5. ACTIVE PROTECTION IS

2. Parental involvement:
âHave a discussion with them about what's appropriate and what's
not. Look at their images and see if you think there's something that
shouldn't be on the profile and then have them either remove it or let
us know you're concerned and then we'll work with you.â
- Hemanshu Nigam, Chief Security Officer, MySpace
âAt least moms and dads should learn about what they are doing.â

4. Understand bad intentions exist:
âSexual predators do exist and are a very real threat. They target
both boys and girls of all ages and use the anonymity of the
Internet to their advantage since they can be whomever they want.
Many are master manipulators with skills that can cripple any
child's sense of awareness. This is known as the grooming
process and predators look for children that are more technically
savvy than their parents.â

8. ACTIVE PROTECTION FROM THREATS
IS IMPORTANT (MATT. 10:16)
Proactively understand the threat:
Threats can come from within:
âBehold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of
wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless
as doves.â
How do we protect against internal threats?
1. Understand our depravity:
âAs it is written, âThere is none righteous, no, not one:ââ
- Romans 3:10
9. ACTIVE PROTECTION FROM THREATS
IS IMPORTANT (MATT. 10:16)
Proactively understand the threat:

2. Evaluate our personal weaknesses:
âBut every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his
own lust, and enticed.â - James 1:14
10. ACTIVE PROTECTION FROM THREATS
IS IMPORTANT (MATT. 5:29)
Thoughtfully implement protections:
We must take others sin and our own sin seriously:
âAnd if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from
thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members
should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast
into hell.â - Matthew 5:29
1. Are we willing to give up modern conveniences for
spiritual health?
2. Are we taking the threat of our sin and otherâs sin
seriously?
3. You cannot start thinking about these threats too
soon.
11. ACTIVE PROTECTION FROM THREATS
IS IMPORTANT (MATT. 5:29)
Thoughtfully implement protections:
We must have concrete protections in place:
1. Communicate regularly about online activity.
2. Enforce social media age restrictions personally.
3. Know which social media sites are used.
4. Educate yourself about those sites.
5. Do not use full names.
6. Never friend someone you have not met in person.
7. Restrict personal information given.
8. Set security restrictions on social media sites.
9. Think about photos you post on sites.
10. Breaking rules leads to removal of account.
12. ACTIVE NURTURING TOWARDS THE
GOSPEL IS ESSENTIAL (TITUS 2:11-12)
Decisively warn against what is anti-Gospel:
The grace of God turns us from sin:
âFor the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath
appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts,â - Titus 2:11-12
13. ACTIVE NURTURING TOWARDS THE
GOSPEL IS ESSENTIAL (TITUS 2:11-12)
Enthusiastically communicate the Gospel:
The grace of God turns us to righteousness:
âFor the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath
appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly,
righteously, and godly, in this present world.â
- Titus 2:11-12

Editor's Notes
Introduction: Social Media is all around us.
Snapchat
Facebook
Pinterest
Google Plus
Vines
Kik
Tumblr
Instagram
Yik Yak
Twitter
Just to name a few
Social Media is an interesting topic for the believer. It can be used for so much good and or so much harm. This should not be a surprise to us. Social Media is medium â it is another way of communicating. Just as our spoken or written words can be good or bad, depending on the situation and our heart condition, so social media can do the same.
The danger is real; because many times social media can start out for the right reasons, but not end up that way.
Illustration: McDonalds started a twitter campaign with the hasthag mcdstories. The goal was to connect with customers personal experiences with their brand. Unfortunately for them, the idea did not go as planned. Instead of positive, heart-warming stories flooding the social media site, customers started leaving complaints about their dissatisfaction and bad experiences with the company.
Because we live in a sin-cursed world, full of sinful people, every type of communication has the ability to be used for evil and probably will be. But how do we please God through social media?
We need to do our best to avoid threats.
- Internet filter
- Internet security, including social media, is for the primary purpose of not allowing us to see things that are not spiritually beneficial but harmful.
- Are teens and adults able to bypass filters? Yes, but many people are tempted when they view material that they were not meaning to find.
- Filters can protect our innocence and our curiosity.
Parental involvement
- Create some social media accounts to become familiar with the proâs and conâs.
- Periodically check on childrenâs activity.
- Donât be afraid to ask for passwords or âinvade privacy.â God has called you to protect your children.
- Use inappropriate content found on a family members account as a teaching time, not just discipline.
Illustration: Sarah was a seventh grader living in Arkansas. âSarahâs mother says she often checked her MySpace page to make sure there wasn't anything inappropriate being sent or received, and she noticed that she was getting some bad messages about rumors at school ⊠and talked to her about it. But then Sarah removed her from her list of friends and she was no longer able to read her page.â Sarah later took her own life; because as here suicide not read: âshe couldnât handle what others were saying about her.â
We need to do our best to avoid threats.
Research current trends and apps
- Ask.fm â one can create a profile and then anonymous users can ask them questions.
- Yik-yak â allows users to anonymously chat with other users within a one-to-five mile radius. A stranger knows you are fairly near by the nature of the app.
- Poof â App hider, no longer exists, but there will always be others.
We need to do our best to avoid threats.
- Social Media is a huge avenue for predators since the whole point is to connect with people.
- Predators can use a simple picture to see your address and know where you and your children live.
- Some social media sites purposefully make it difficult to understand security settings, etc.
- âNever think that it cannot happen to youâ
Stats of online predators:
- More than 500,000 predators are online everyday
- 89 percent of all sexual advances toward our children take place in internet chat rooms and through instant messaging
Many gaming sites have chatrooms connected. These are havens for predators.
Personal Weaknesses:
Gossip
Immoral thoughts or actions
Unkind communication
Jealousy
Laziness
Hyperbole to show the severity of sin.
Sin leads to destruction.
We sometimes need to take drastic measures for protection.
Are we willing to give up modern conveniences for spiritual health? (Smart phones, tablets, social media, time, annoyance of checking on our children)
Are we taking the threat of our sin and others sin seriously?
Parents, are you actively helping your children be physically and spiritually safe?
How can you improve from what you are doing already?
You cannot start thinking about these threats too soon.
Possibly a DS instead of ipad, etc. Better parent controls
Limiting amount of time.
Kid Safe settings.
