6. • The foundation of the premier Indian city of
Calcutta were laid on 24th Aug, 1690.
• When few englishmen under the leadership
of Job Charnock landed at Sutanuti on banks
of river hugly.
• Here was constructed fortified factory
which was named as Fort William.
8. • In 1698 the company
secured the zamindari of
these three adjacent
villages Calcutta,
Sutanuti, Govindpur
from prince ‘Azim-ush-shan’
grandson of
‘Aurangazeb’ subhedar
of Bengal on the site of
these villages grew up
the modern city of
calcutta.
9. Acquisition of Zamindari
• In December 1699, Calcutta became a presidency
and a president or governor and council were
appointed to administer the settelment with the
acquisition of zamindari company secured a
legal and constitutional status.
• As zamindar the company become entitled to
exercise all those functions and powers within
the zamindari territory as other zamindars in
Bengal commonly exercised at that time within
their domains.
11. • In 1700 an english officer known as collector
was appointed to act as zamindar on the
behalf of the company.He used to be a
member of the governor and council.
• The collector was empowered to
collect revenue and decide
civil,criminal and revenue
cases pertaining to the
indain inhabitants of
the settlement.
12. • The collector used to decide civil cases in a
summary manner according to the customs and
usuage of the country and in their absence, he
was decide cases according to th principle of
natural justice and equity.
• The appeals from collectors could be heard by
governor and council.
• The petty civil cases pertaining to the english
people could be decided by the collector but the
important cases were to be decided by governor
and council.
13. • The collector was also responsible for collection
of revenue from the native inhabitants of
zamindari.
• They were to decide revenue cases also.
• The appeals to be heard by governor and
council.the collector was to decide criminal cases
of the native inhabitants of the zamindari.
• He used to decide such cases summarily without
jury whipping fines,imprisonment and work on
road were the important punishment awarded by
the collector in such cases the death sentense was
not inflicted unless it was confirmed by the
governor and council.
14. • The appeals from the collectors court were to be
heard and decided by the government and

• But the serious criminal offences comitted by
them were to de tried by the governor and
council.the practise of the company was
different from that of other zamindars in some
respect.
15. • The death sentence awarded by the collector
was to be confirmed by the governor and
council while the death sentence awarded by
the other zamindars to be confirmed by the
nawab at Murshidabad besides the appeals
from the collector of other zamindars lay to
the nawab courts.
