role in the development of Jazz music with greats such as Duke Ellington influencing jazz from the
start of the swing era (Gioia, 2011). Jazz Pianists were often on the forefront of the ongoing
development of jazz music. However, when the bebop era dawned, piano seemed to move into the
background, with people like John Coltrane and Miles Davis leading the charge. However, this did
not mean the piano disappeared, far from it; Jazz music is a genre that is in constant flux, driven by
the players in the music. Often, the most famous jazz musicians were the most innovative and
forward thinking players of their respective eras. Musicians hold jazz pedigree and genealogy in
high regard, where playing with and learning from the masters that came before was almost a
necessity. Some musicians learn from meticulously studying and transcribing solos and
compositions performed by previous masters. Pianos ability to play melody and harmony together
made it one of the most complex and diverse instruments in the world, especially in jazz music,

My Most Memorable Experience In My Life
My heart was pounding out of my chest as I walked through the frigid, pitch–black forest alone. I
could hear was the sound of the night wind blowing against the trees, crickets chirping in the tall
grass all around me, the stream flowing peacefully on my right, and my unsteady breath, which
seemed like the loudest. I walked, step by step, along a path I could barely make out. Am I going off
the trail? I questioned myself, and kept walking through the silent forest. I was on my first, and only
solo–night hike in Yellowstone, Wyoming. This was a night that I will remember forever.
Over the summer, I took a trip to Yellowstone, Wyoming with thirty–eight other eighth graders and
high schoolers. The trip lasted almost two weeks and was one of the most memorable experiences in
my life, but there was one night that impacts me every single day since. On the third night that we
were staying at our campsite, my friends and I were getting ready for bed and hanging out around
the bonfire when the camp counselors made an announcement.
"Everyone meet at the bonfire at 10:30 and bring nothing with you. No backpacks, phones,
flashlights, absolutely nothing. Dress warm because it's going to be cold tonight!" announced Miss
Flower, one of the counselors.

What is going on? There were so many questions overfilling our minds, that none of the counselors

In the 70s and 80s punk music emerged. It was a style that was derived from rock music, and
similarly to rock, it defied hierarchies. However, punk rock defied hierarchies in a more extremist
level than how rock did it, it promoted anarchy, which means that it was against any type of
government (Davies 1–2), Most people can probably recognize the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the
Ramones, as the most popular bands. The Sex Pistols only lasted three years as a band and recorded
only one album, but they are the ones that caused a bigger impact, since they were the

Today I had an appointment with my upper division writing professor, Dr. Emily Foss. I met with
her to review my coursework, and to address some concerns. The first part of the 20 minute meeting
went fairly well. She had not taken the time to collect collect some early writing steps from us, not
were we required to upload these steps online. There was also ambiguity about the due date of our
last paper. All of those things were ironed out in fairly short order.
The discussion then turned to my most recent paper, a paper that required two, distinct perspectives
of a community based on in–group (first essay) and out–group (second essay) membership. I wrote
my first paper about my experiences growing as a Black, gay male, and the feeling of not belonging
of any community. The second was an academic perspective, taken from a sociological approach
about gay persons of color (intersectional identities).
On this particular paper, I received an 80% (under the University of California system that is a B
minus) and based on the quality of the paper, I couldn 't understand why. Getting feedback in this
course has not been the easiest. Dr. Foss made it clear early in the quarter that she will not read our

Angela Davis began her college career at Brandeis University to study French which granted her the
opportunity to study abroad in France. In 1963, while Davis was in France four black girls were
killed in a church bombing known as the 16th Street Church Bombing. This tragedy sparked Davis'
Passion for philosophy because she was personally affected by the bombing since she knew two of
the killed victims.
In 1969, Davis came back the America and joined several radical civil rights organizations. She was
a member of the Communist Party, USA and a member of the Black Panther Party along with being

prosecutor, and three jury members hostage. He eventually shot and killed Judge Haley and the
prosecutor. Coincidentally, the pistol Johnathan Jackson used to kill the judge and prosecutor were
bought by Angela Davis a day before the shooting; therefore, Angela Davis was put on a 13 week

In his career, Timothy Webster served as a New York City policeman in the earliest days of the
department, worked as a private detective in the most famous private detective agency ever, acted as
a Union spy during the American Civil War, and generally lived a life of adventure and daring.
There is no telling what Webster would have accomplished had his life not been cut short.
Timothy Webster Jr. was born on March 22, 1822, in Newhaven, Sussex County, England, the fourth
of eleven children born to Timothy and Frances Webster. Two of the children died in infancy and
one at the age of two. The Websters immigrated to the United States in 1830 and settled in
Princeton, New Jersey. Timothy was eight.
For a time Webster's life was typical enough. At nineteen he married twenty–three year old
Charlotte Sprowls. A year later their first child, a son, was born. They would have four children in
all.
Sometime in the 1840s they moved to New York City and Timothy, now with a family to support,
embarked on a career in law enforcement, joining the city's then–fledgling police force.
Before 1845, the force was simply too small for the large metropolis. The Municipal Police Act,
signed into law in 1845, set up a larger department, based on London's department. It laid the
foundation for the modern New York Police Department.

There is an evident issue with the public schooling system in America today. Throughout the entire
country, kids are the victims of schools that fail to gift them with the knowledge that they need to
excel past high school. In lower–class areas of the country, students are destined to become dropouts
because their education simply does not provide them a way out. In the film, Waiting for Superman,
director Davis Guggenheim claims that schools are failing to meet beneficial education standards
for all students. Due to their demographic, children in lower–class areas of the country do not have
access to the same educational opportunities that wealthier families receive. Throughout the film,
Guggenheim's use of music and pacing creates a powerful feeling of sympathy in the audience
towards the children that are not privileged to a better education because of their economic status.
By utilizing these devices, the film ultimately hopes to build on the audience's sympathy in order to
possibly ignite a change for the public education system in the United States. There are a variety of
ways in which music is used throughout this film, but the use of sad music and silence are the two

In order to look into the lives of the U.S. citizens during the Civil War I decided to look into the first
week from April 12, 1861 to April 18, 1861 of the New York Times. I looked into this week of
articles to see how the New York Times covered the outbreak of the war and the people's response to
it. Some of the main war events covered were: call for Union to relinquish command of Fort Sumter
and first shots of the war, reaction to the surrender of Fort Sumter, Lincoln's Proclamation to add
seventy–five thousand volunteers to the war efforts, possible attacks on Fort Pickens, and the
Confederate reaction to Lincoln's Proclamation. During this week, the north was obviously nervous
and scared yet felt they would win as well as confused as to why the war was happening at all. The
April 12 paper included information on the confederates asking Major Anderson to surrender Fort
Sumter and strategies for the defense of the fort. In the Times article "The Forts in Charleston
Harbor" there is a sense that the union forces have positioned themselves well and the confederates
have waited too long allowing the opportunity for reinforcements to arrive if needed at Fort Sumter.

Despite the mistakes his father and brother made, Lee managed to grow learning the ways of a true
Southern gentleman. The departure of his father and two older half–brothers made Lee the man of
the house at an early age. His mother, Ann Carter, raised Lee in modest circumstances and helped
him to learn standard of conduct. Lee grew up in modest conditions, and though he received the
normal education for someone of his class, he had to earn his own living and didn't live the easy–
going plantation life that most members of his family did. Since his mother did not have sufficient
cash to send Lee to go to college, he chose instead to enter West Point military and academy. He
entered in 1825 at the age of 18. At West Point Lee excelled tremendously. He finished second in his

Blue and red lights flashed outside, while I saw my father being handcuffed; my mother and older

"American Sonnet to my Past and Future Assassin" by Terrance Hayes is a modern American sonnet
whose focus is a black man struggling to comprehend his place in society. The speaker of the poem
illustrates his dilemma through comparisons to the respected black musicians of the twentieth
century to whom he feels a deep connection to. The tone of the sonnet is one of contemplation, or
even uncertainty, as the speaker outlines his thoughts in reluctance, questioning both himself and his
audience. Befitting of the overall tone, the sonnet commences with uncertainty, plainly illustrated
with the language of the speaker's initial statement: "I'm not sure how to hold my face when I
dance" (1), for he arranges his words to portray a feeling of vacillation. Immediately following this
reflective proclamation, the speaker poses three questions, all of which allude to the contemplative
tone apparent in the text. While these inquiries regard the subject of dance, the speaker also intends
for them to be metaphors for the uncertainty he, as a black man, has for his place in society. His
questions are rapid–fire, almost probing the audience for answers that are seemingly nonexistent. As
a result of the rapidity, there is an absence of breaks for these questions to be answered, evincing the
speaker's belief that they, in fact, have no answers. These first four sentences are crucial in the
sonnet's development, as they kindle ruminations for both the speaker and the audience. Promptly
thereafter, the narrator compares his own hesitant nature to the eminent musician Jimi Hendrix, and

transmit a divider between the poem and the reader. The turn in the poem, "[y]et if you should forget
me for a while" suggests a complete contradiction to the first section, as well as an interesting
paradox (Rossetti 554, 9). By momentarily forgetting the first part, which tells the reader to
remember, the reader is encouraged to forget in order to be happy, however it practically eludes the
idea of departure and moves on to the idea of acceptance. In Wheatley's "A Farewell to America",
the reader gains the impression from the title that she is planning on leaving America to live in Great
Britain. Surely, within the poem's content this is further speculated as she claims Great Britain to be
a "[t]emptation" (Wheatley 1021, 45). However, she remains in America either out of choice, or out
of poverty after being freed from slavery. Similarly to Rossetti, Wheatley uses flowery, vivid and
romanticized descriptions of both Great Britain and America but never ends up moving to the

Bureau Of Land Management : Cerro Alto
Cerro Alto is the name of both the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) campground and the hike to
one of the highest spots in San Luis Obispo County. This lovely, wooded campground is on
Highway 41, in a shaded canyon, seven miles from Morro Bay. It is a place I have camped often
when visiting the area. It has twenty–two sites, pit toilets and water. It is also scenic, green and
quiet.
The campground is at 1,000 feet, and Cerro Also Peak is 2,624 feet, a 1,600–foot climb, quite
strenuous in places. There are two ways to get to the top. The longer and less steep departs next to
campsite 19, and the shorter, steeper trail starts just past site 16, where it first crosses the creek on a
wooden bridge. The main trail at site 19 is signed "Cerro Alto Trail 12E01."
We took the longer trail up, the shorter one down, saving .7 miles. It was 2.75 up and just over 2
miles back down.
After waking up at site 18, having breakfast and cleaning up, we started up the trail. In retrospect, I
would have gotten ready a bit quicker, as it was getting pretty warm as we approached the peak.
However, the first three quarters to one mile offered a gradual assent, mostly in the shade and along
the side of a creek for a time. We paused to enjoy a small waterfall along the trail. Then it started to
climb a bit steeply, and the shade became occasional places where we looked forward to stopping to
