Ismailia TUNNELS
1. Ismailia, Egypt - The Ismailia road tunnel is a twin tube road tunnel that will
cross the existing and new Suez Canal north of the city of Ismailia. It is part of
a larger development project in the Suez Canal corridor. The completion of
the development project including the tunnel has the highest priority in Egypt
to boost economic growth. Therefore, the pressure is high to deliver this
project on a tight schedule. In addition, local know-how and experience with
this type and size of tunneling project is not available in Egypt.

3. Arcadis is to deliver the complete design from concept to detailed design for the tunnel
construction including the alignment, launch and receiving shaft, intermediate inspection
and ventilation shafts, cross passages, highway design and all MEP systems e.g.
ventilation, light, communication, pump systems and a fixed firefighting system
The tunnel, with two parallel tunnel tubes will be constructed as a TBM drive with two tunnel
boring machines with a diameter of approximately Ø13.0 meters at a maximum depth of
almost 70 meters below ground level. The total TBM length will be about 4.7 kilometers,
excluding the connecting ramp structures.
4. The Suez Canal near Ismailia
Client of Arcadis is a joint venture between Egypt based companies Petrojet and Concord
for Engineering and Contracting. The end client is the Ministry of Defense represented by
the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces (EAAF). The client is working on a project
like Ismailia Road Tunnel for the first time. Therefore, Arcadis was chosen as a supplier
because of the many different disciplines it brings together. Arcadis is expected to deliver a
quick and robust design as the pressure on the joint venture for delivery on time is very
high.
The Ismailia Road Tunnel project is part of the investments made in the context of the Suez
Canal Corridor Development Project. In addition to the construction of the new Suez Canal
a rail and road tunnel will be constructed at three locations (Port Said, Ismailia and Suez).
The Ismailia Road Tunnel is located in the vicinity of the town of Ismailia, halfway between
Port Said and Suez alongside the Suez Canal.
Arcadis has started developing this project in januari 2015. As of March 2015 construction
has started on the launch shaft on the west bank of the existing Suez Canal.
