2. Media Inventory 2
1. What media sources do you use for information most often? Why do you choose these
sources?
I use the computer a majority of the time when it comes to getting information about
something. The television for me only serves for entertainment. I’ve learned trying to find the
truth on any matter by depending on televised news is pointless. Therefore, I use the computer
with the understanding of the old adage “garbage in, garbage out”. The internet affords me the
opportunity to do something televised news does not. I can go to a number of sources to gather
all the data I need to make an informed decision or have an educated opinion.
2. What does your media use communicate about your life and your dependence on media?
I would hope my media use reflects the fact that I realize the shortfalls of believing
everything you hear. While in the Air Force I met a lot of very intelligent people; however,
when I was told something I practiced the “trust but verify” method before making a decision.
One thing is for sure, I am in no way tied to any one media source. I have no Facebook account,
I don’t tweet, and I’d rather talk to someone face-to-face. You will never see me in a restaurant
with my family paying more attention to my phone than to my family. Bottom line, I’m not
dependent on any form of media.
3. Are you “media literate”? Define the term and tell whether it applies to you.
I would like to think I am “media-literate”. I know that information can come from a lot
of different sources. For me being media-literate is the ability to obtain information and help me
become a competent member of society. It is about being critical of what you read or hear and

using different forms of media to help me formulate informed, educated decisions and opinions.
4. If you had to do without media for an extended period of time, would you feel comfortable or
anxious? Describe how you would react and why.
I’d feel very anxious. Not because I could not post a message on a blog, or see what my
sister is doing on Facebook, but because I would have to rely on people to get information and
putting all forms of media aside, probably the most untrustworthy form of obtaining information
is from another human being. We all see and interpret things differently and by the time it goes
through ten people, the story has changed as many times and the truth is nowhere to be found.
