1. Caltex Fuel Your School
Chak Shan Chun
Geography and English teacher
SMK Taman Sejahtera
2. A project dedicated to expose students of
SMK Taman Sejahtera about the world, their
potentials, and at the same time, teaching
them Geography, History and English
4. Growing up, you knew
that the world is BIG
You knew that with a
good education, the world
is in your hand
(literally or figuratively)
5. But the same thing can’t be said for
my students…
6. This is how
the world
looks like for
my students
7. Why does that matter?
What’s wrong with not knowing the
world?
So what, if they don’t know about the
world?
What’s the big deal? Well, here’s a quote
for food for thought
8. "If you want to build a ship, don't
drum up people to collect wood and
don't assign them tasks and work, but
rather teach them to long for the
endless immensity of the sea."
-Antoine de Saint Exupéry
9. Right now, my students have no idea
that there’s a whole world waiting for
them to explore
They do not know that education, and
English is the key to unlocking the world
Simply because they have no awareness
that a world exist outside of their Bukit
Mertajam bubble.
…let’s do a quick recap!
10. Problems:
Students lack awareness about their
potential, and the world around them
Students are apathetic about the world
around them, and their own future
Students lack inspiration to aspire, to
dream big, and to excel in school
12. World
History
Interest in English
Inspiration to
aspire
Dream BIGGER!
World
Geography
13. Moreover,
Geography is the gateway subject for sciences that’s not
touched in Science subjects in school, such as:
Geodesy, Geomatics, GIS, Geomorphology, Geology,
Hydrology, Ecology, Climatology, Climate Science,
Meteorology, Environmental Science, etc
In fact, Geography is often regarded as a science, which
studies the lands, features, inhabitants, and
phenomenon of the earth
14.
15. What do we need?
A floor mural depicting the world map
A projector to showcase the world in
classroom
Globes that they can hold in their hands
16. This is our assembly ground.
Let’s make use of the big
empty spot below
19. Having a floor mural would allow teachers
to conduct classes outside of classroom,
and students can feel like for the first time,
how it feels like to step on places they’ve
only read about in textbooks.
It revitalizes the way a teacher would go
about teaching world history or world
geography. Chalk and talk? How about
Walk and Talk?
20. But having a floor mural is not enough.
Can we bring the world to the class? Can I
show them pictures of Sahara Desert when
I am teaching about desert. Can I show
them a clip from Discovery Channel about
icecap melting when we talk about global
warming?
Yes we can.
Hence, we are asking for a projector
21.
22. I have seen the kind of wonder a globe can
bring to a class. We do have a globe, but
the current one is broken.
Whenever I bring globe to class, I see my
students’ eyes light up and they are eager
to touch and feel the globe.
Globe is a good way to teach lesser topics
that does not require a projector or a walk
to our floor mural. Given that our current
one is broken, we would like to request for
a globe
23.
24. With that I would like
Caltex to support my
classroom project.
I strongly believe that
these items would help
my students to dream
big .
25. So that one day, this
too will be the world
they see
26. "If you want to build a ship, don't
drum up people to collect wood and
don't assign them tasks and work, but
rather teach them to long for the
endless immensity of the sea."
