1. Crown Forces Toronto Employees on Strike
Crown Holdings has taken an aggressive and confrontational approach in negotiations. Despite
doubling its profits in 2012, Crown has demanded a two-tier wage schedule, the elimination of the
cost-of-living allowance (COLA) and offered only minimal wage increases after years of pay
freezes.
During the previous contract negotiations, USW Local 9176 members cooperated with Crown to
help it through difficult financial times. They agreed to freeze the COLA for two years. Their wages
and pensions had already been frozen for years. While workers sacrificed through hard times,
Crown’s CEO John Conway continued to receive a multi-million dollar compensation package. In
2012, Conway was paid over $12 million, including a $2.8 million bonus for reaching “economic
targets” for the company – profits made possible by cutting wages and pensions and by the
sacrifices and hard work of employees like the members of USW Local 9176.
Crown’s demands threaten the well-being of current and future generations of Crown employees.
Lower living standards and low wages are not a legacy that union members want to leave for new
employees.
We have drawn a line in the sand and are standing up for all Crown workers.
