1. Title:Patient Center Care
Exemplar:
Patient centered care is acquired by fulfilling the needs of patients medically and
through empathy and communication. Currently, I am a nursing student at Shorter
University. I can remember one clinical event in specific that occurred this past year.
My nurse and I received a new patient within a few minutes of me getting to the
floor. We walked in the room and started collecting information from her. The nurse then
realized that her patient spoke very minimal english. Do to the increase in the spanish
speaking population, being bilingual has always been to my advantage in the hospital. At
the moment, there was no one to translate and I saw that she was struggling to speak to
her. I offered to help by translating until the hospital translator arrived. The patient and
her family were relieved to know that I could speak spanish and instantly opened up
more. The reason why they were there was because the patient had several fainting
episodes within the past days. She had to get several studies done in order to determine
what was causing the problem. The lady had an instant connection with me. While we
were in the room she talked to me about God and his impact on her life. She spoke to me
about her religion as a Jehova witness. However, as soon as she was informed of what
was needed to be done and the possibility of having to get admitted to the hospital, she
refused treatment. The reason why she did not want to stay overnight was because she
was attending a big religion convention that afternoon. The patient told me that she felt
at ease knowing that she could talk to me without any trouble. She decided to leave
against medical advice but before leaving she thanked me for my help and for taking the
2. time to listen to her.
Relection:
Patient centered care in nursing may be difficult at times. It was not until I
experienced this personal situation, that I realized the difficulty of this side of nursing.
This experience opened my eyes and made me realize that as a nurse, you will not always
agree with your patient's wishes. In fact, many times you will disagree. In this situation I
did not help by fixing someone physically but moreso by respecting their personal
values.Even though nursing comes with its challenges, it can also be rewarding.
