Zoom for K-12 Schools & Districts Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 9, 2020
Zoom partners with schools to provide video communica ons to support tradi onal, virtual, and hybrid classrooms, distance learning, educa onal office
hours, guest lectures, and more. As part of the services we provide to K-12 schools (also called primary and secondary schools), Zoom may be used by
students, including students under the age of 16. We are par cularly commi ed to protec ng the privacy of K-12 users, and Zoom’s K-12 Schools &
Districts Privacy Policy is designed to reflect our compliance with the applicable requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protec on Act (COPPA),
the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the Federal Educa on Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Student Online Personal Informa on Protec on
Act (SOPIPA), the EU General Data Protec on Regula on (GDPR), and other applicable laws. This policy applies to students and other end users who
may be using Zoom under accounts created by School Subscribers (as that term is defined below), regardless of whether such School Subscriber account
is paid for, or free. (Please refer to Zoom’s general privacy policy here for informa on pertaining to non-School Subscriber accounts.)
Requirements for Informa on Collec on
In the United States, and other jurisdic ons where applicable, before collec ng any personal informa on (“Personal Informa on”) from students
accessing Zoom for K-12 services, we require the “School Subscriber”—typically the students’ school, school district, administrator or teacher—to
contractually consent to our informa on prac ces, as permi ed by applicable law.
For purposes of GDPR, the School Subscriber is the Controller and Zoom is the Processor of a student’s Personal Informa on. The Controller
determines the legal basis, means and purposes for processing the data, and Zoom follows the direc ons of the Controller who sends us the data.
We only collect students’ Personal Informa on to provide Zoom for K-12 services to the School Subscriber, not for marke ng or adver sing, and, with
the limited excep on of our service providers (to the extent necessary to provide their services to us), we do not share Personal Informa on about K-12
students or other Zoom for K-12 end users with other par es except as directed by the School Subscriber or required or permi ed by law, as set forth in
this Privacy Policy and consistent with our agreements with our School Subscribers.
Informa on Collec on
We collect the following categories of data from Zoom for K-12 end users:
Informa on commonly used for iden fica on, such as a user’s name, email address (if entered) and other similar iden fiers;
Informa on about a student’s school, including its loca on;
Informa on about the student’s device, network, and internet connec on, such as IP address(es), MAC address, other device ID (UDID), device
type, opera ng system type and version, and client version;
Informa on about how the student uses the Zoom pla orm, including type and frequency of ac ons taken, number of mes the student logs in
or enters a mee ng, date and me, dura on, quan ty, quality, network connec vity, other pla orm performance metrics, and feature usage
informa on, including use of video and screen sharing;
Content shared, chat messages, and cloud recordings (if the School Subscriber chooses to store a recording in the Zoom cloud). Zoom collects this
data on behalf of the School Subscriber while the service is being used, but does not monitor or access it, unless the School Subscriber requests
it, for example, to provide technical support, and
Other informa on users – including teachers, school administrators, and students - upload, provide, or create while using Zoom for K-12 services.
We collect data in the following ways:
When students (or other end users) are set up for, invited to, or use Zoom for K-12 services, by the very nature of the usage and the service, data is
collected. We gather students’ Personal Informa on from the School Subscriber, directly from the student as they interact with educa onal content on
the Zoom pla orm, directly from students’ devices, and directly from someone who invites users to communicate with them via Zoom (such as a
teacher). Some of this collec on happens when a student or someone who wants to communicate with them via Zoom (e.g., a teacher or classmate)
affirma vely submits that informa on. Some of our collec on happens in the background – that is, it’s automa cally collected when users interact with
Zoom (an example of the data collected this way is the informa on about the student’s device or connec on, or the informa on about feature usage.).
Zoom and/or our third-party service providers also automa cally collect some informa on using methods such as cookies. Informa on automa cally
collected may include Internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), opera ng system, and date/ me stamp. We use this
informa on to provide and support the Zoom for K-12 services. We do not use this informa on to deliver adver sing or for any other purpose not
related to the delivery and support of the services.
We may collect Personal Informa on about K-12 students from the School Subscriber and authorized users of the School Subscriber account, including
Personal Informa on contained in “educa onal records,” as defined by FERPA. Zoom maintains this informa on on behalf and at the direc on of the
School Subscriber and does not use the informa on for other purposes except as permi ed by FERPA and our applicable agreements with School
Subscribers.
Data Use
We use Personal Informa on collected from and about students only as needed to deliver the func onality of the Zoom pla orm, operate our business,
and for use by School Subscribers at their direc on as follows:
We may use all of the types of Personal Informa on that we collect for the following purposes, to the extent permi ed by our agreements with our School
Subscriber customers:
1. Providing, personalizing, opera ng, and maintaining our Products.
School Subscriber Account configura on and maintenance
Enabling mee ngs and webinars between the School Subscriber and their students/par cipants.
Hos ng and storing personal data from mee ngs and webinars on behalf and at the direc on of the mee ng host/School Subscriber
Fulfilling requests made by users of the service, including requests for access to Personal Informa on received from a School Subscriber
Protec ng, inves ga ng and deterring against fraudulent, harmful, unauthorized or illegal ac vity
Providing access to data and reports to School Subscribers based on informa on collected from students’ use of our Service
Providing support and assistance for the service.
Complying with our contractual and legal obliga ons, resolving disputes with users, enforcing our agreements
Some of the students’ Personal Informa on is shared with other mee ng par cipants, during the use of the service. For example, messages and content
shared by a student in a mee ng, webinar, or interac ve educa onal se ng, including Personal Informa on, will be available to all other par cipants in
that mee ng. If the School Subscriber or a student shares a mee ng link with another user who is not already in the mee ng, when that user tries to join
the mee ng, he or she will be able to see the list of other users in the mee ng, as well as other invitees joining the mee ng.
In order to op mize provision of the Service, we may collect broad geographic loca on (city-level loca on) informa on about where users are located
when using Zoom. We use this informa on for service-related purposes (such as op mizing connec ons to our data center), suppor ng compliance, and
customizing user experience with our service (e.g., language preference).
We may also use third-party service providers to help us provide the service, and they may have limited access to Personal Informa on in the process.
We prohibit our service providers from selling Personal Informa on they receive from us or on our behalf and require them to only use that Personal
Informa on in order to perform the services we have asked of them, unless otherwise required by law.
2. Following the instruc ons of our School Subscriber.
Personal Informa on we collect, we collect on behalf of our School Subscribers. (To use the technical term, we are the “Processor” of that Personal
Informa on, ac ng as a service provider on behalf and at the direc on of our School Subscriber, and our School Subscriber is the “Controller” or
decisionmaker.) For example, the School Subscriber may determine when mee ngs can be recorded, how long the recordings are retained, and the like.
We are typically required to follow a School Subscriber’s instruc ons related to Personal Informa on we have collected on their behalf. On a School
Subscriber’s instruc ons, we may provide reports to the School Subscriber containing Personal Informa on rela ng to the school’s account and
students’ use of the educa onal se ng controlled by the School Subscriber.
3. Complying with our legal obliga ons or the legal obliga ons of our subscribers.
This includes responding to a legally binding demand for informa on, such as a warrant issued by a law enforcement en ty of competent jurisdic on, or
as reasonably necessary to preserve Zoom’s legal rights.
Third Par es
Zoom does not share Personal Informa on with third par es other than the service providers described above, or as required by law, except at the
direc on and on behalf of a School Subscriber.
Security
Maintaining the confiden ality, security, and integrity of students’ Personal Informa on is a top priority. We use industry-standard security
technologies, procedures, and organiza onal measures designed to help protect Personal Informa on from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure.
Access and Dele on Rights
If a student or his or her parent would like to request to access, review, refuse further collec on of, or delete the student’s Personal Informa on, please
contact your school or school district with your request. Because Zoom is required to comply with contractual confiden ality obliga ons related to our
customers’ data, we are not able to respond to parental or student requests directly. School Subscribers may direct requests to access, delete or
restrict further collec on or use of a student’s Personal informa on to privacy@zoom.us.

Zoom for K-12 Schools & Districts Privacy Policy Last updated: April 9, 2020 Zoom partners with schools to provide video communica ons to support tradi onal, virtual, and hybrid classrooms, distance learning, educa onal office hours, guest lectures, and more. As part of the services we provide to K-12 schools (also called primary and secondary schools), Zoom may be used by students, including students under the age of 16. We are par cularly commi ed to protec ng the privacy of K-12 users, and Zoom’s K-12 Schools & Districts Privacy Policy is designed to reflect our compliance with the applicable requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protec on Act (COPPA), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the Federal Educa on Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Student Online Personal Informa on Protec on Act (SOPIPA), the EU General Data Protec on Regula on (GDPR), and other applicable laws. This policy applies to students and other end users who may be using Zoom under accounts created by School Subscribers (as that term is defined below), regardless of whether such School Subscriber account is paid for, or free. (Please refer to Zoom’s general privacy policy here for informa on pertaining to non-School Subscriber accounts.) Requirements for Informa on Collec on In the United States, and other jurisdic ons where applicable, before collec ng any personal informa on (“Personal Informa on”) from students accessing Zoom for K-12 services, we require the “School Subscriber”—typically the students’ school, school district, administrator or teacher—to contractually consent to our informa on prac ces, as permi ed by applicable law. For purposes of GDPR, the School Subscriber is the Controller and Zoom is the Processor of a student’s Personal Informa on. The Controller determines the legal basis, means and purposes for processing the data, and Zoom follows the direc ons of the Controller who sends us the data. We only collect students’ Personal Informa on to provide Zoom for K-12 services to the School Subscriber, not for marke ng or adver sing, and, with the limited excep on of our service providers (to the extent necessary to provide their services to us), we do not share Personal Informa on about K-12 students or other Zoom for K-12 end users with other par es except as directed by the School Subscriber or required or permi ed by law, as set forth in this Privacy Policy and consistent with our agreements with our School Subscribers. Informa on Collec on We collect the following categories of data from Zoom for K-12 end users: Informa on commonly used for iden fica on, such as a user’s name, email address (if entered) and other similar iden fiers; Informa on about a student’s school, including its loca on; Informa on about the student’s device, network, and internet connec on, such as IP address(es), MAC address, other device ID (UDID), device type, opera ng system type and version, and client version; Informa on about how the student uses the Zoom pla orm, including type and frequency of ac ons taken, number of mes the student logs in or enters a mee ng, date and me, dura on, quan ty, quality, network connec vity, other pla orm performance metrics, and feature usage informa on, including use of video and screen sharing; Content shared, chat messages, and cloud recordings (if the School Subscriber chooses to store a recording in the Zoom cloud). Zoom collects this data on behalf of the School Subscriber while the service is being used, but does not monitor or access it, unless the School Subscriber requests it, for example, to provide technical support, and Other informa on users – including teachers, school administrators, and students - upload, provide, or create while using Zoom for K-12 services. We collect data in the following ways: When students (or other end users) are set up for, invited to, or use Zoom for K-12 services, by the very nature of the usage and the service, data is collected. We gather students’ Personal Informa on from the School Subscriber, directly from the student as they interact with educa onal content on the Zoom pla orm, directly from students’ devices, and directly from someone who invites users to communicate with them via Zoom (such as a teacher). Some of this collec on happens when a student or someone who wants to communicate with them via Zoom (e.g., a teacher or classmate) affirma vely submits that informa on. Some of our collec on happens in the background – that is, it’s automa cally collected when users interact with Zoom (an example of the data collected this way is the informa on about the student’s device or connec on, or the informa on about feature usage.). Zoom and/or our third-party service providers also automa cally collect some informa on using methods such as cookies. Informa on automa cally collected may include Internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), opera ng system, and date/ me stamp. We use this informa on to provide and support the Zoom for K-12 services. We do not use this informa on to deliver adver sing or for any other purpose not related to the delivery and support of the services. We may collect Personal Informa on about K-12 students from the School Subscriber and authorized users of the School Subscriber account, including Personal Informa on contained in “educa onal records,” as defined by FERPA. Zoom maintains this informa on on behalf and at the direc on of the School Subscriber and does not use the informa on for other purposes except as permi ed by FERPA and our applicable agreements with School Subscribers. Data Use We use Personal Informa on collected from and about students only as needed to deliver the func onality of the Zoom pla orm, operate our business, and for use by School Subscribers at their direc on as follows: We may use all of the types of Personal Informa on that we collect for the following purposes, to the extent permi ed by our agreements with our School Subscriber customers: 1. Providing, personalizing, opera ng, and maintaining our Products. School Subscriber Account configura on and maintenance Enabling mee ngs and webinars between the School Subscriber and their students/par cipants. Hos ng and storing personal data from mee ngs and webinars on behalf and at the direc on of the mee ng host/School Subscriber Fulfilling requests made by users of the service, including requests for access to Personal Informa on received from a School Subscriber Protec ng, inves ga ng and deterring against fraudulent, harmful, unauthorized or illegal ac vity Providing access to data and reports to School Subscribers based on informa on collected from students’ use of our Service Providing support and assistance for the service. Complying with our contractual and legal obliga ons, resolving disputes with users, enforcing our agreements Some of the students’ Personal Informa on is shared with other mee ng par cipants, during the use of the service. For example, messages and content shared by a student in a mee ng, webinar, or interac ve educa onal se ng, including Personal Informa on, will be available to all other par cipants in that mee ng. If the School Subscriber or a student shares a mee ng link with another user who is not already in the mee ng, when that user tries to join the mee ng, he or she will be able to see the list of other users in the mee ng, as well as other invitees joining the mee ng. In order to op mize provision of the Service, we may collect broad geographic loca on (city-level loca on) informa on about where users are located when using Zoom. We use this informa on for service-related purposes (such as op mizing connec ons to our data center), suppor ng compliance, and customizing user experience with our service (e.g., language preference). We may also use third-party service providers to help us provide the service, and they may have limited access to Personal Informa on in the process. We prohibit our service providers from selling Personal Informa on they receive from us or on our behalf and require them to only use that Personal Informa on in order to perform the services we have asked of them, unless otherwise required by law. 2. Following the instruc ons of our School Subscriber. Personal Informa on we collect, we collect on behalf of our School Subscribers. (To use the technical term, we are the “Processor” of that Personal Informa on, ac ng as a service provider on behalf and at the direc on of our School Subscriber, and our School Subscriber is the “Controller” or decisionmaker.) For example, the School Subscriber may determine when mee ngs can be recorded, how long the recordings are retained, and the like. We are typically required to follow a School Subscriber’s instruc ons related to Personal Informa on we have collected on their behalf. On a School Subscriber’s instruc ons, we may provide reports to the School Subscriber containing Personal Informa on rela ng to the school’s account and students’ use of the educa onal se ng controlled by the School Subscriber. 3. Complying with our legal obliga ons or the legal obliga ons of our subscribers. This includes responding to a legally binding demand for informa on, such as a warrant issued by a law enforcement en ty of competent jurisdic on, or as reasonably necessary to preserve Zoom’s legal rights. Third Par es Zoom does not share Personal Informa on with third par es other than the service providers described above, or as required by law, except at the direc on and on behalf of a School Subscriber. Security Maintaining the confiden ality, security, and integrity of students’ Personal Informa on is a top priority. We use industry-standard security technologies, procedures, and organiza onal measures designed to help protect Personal Informa on from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. Access and Dele on Rights If a student or his or her parent would like to request to access, review, refuse further collec on of, or delete the student’s Personal Informa on, please contact your school or school district with your request. Because Zoom is required to comply with contractual confiden ality obliga ons related to our customers’ data, we are not able to respond to parental or student requests directly. School Subscribers may direct requests to access, delete or restrict further collec on or use of a student’s Personal informa on to privacy@zoom.us.
