1. Lighting Project
1) Take a series of 4 photos to show
•
Frontal Lighting
•
Side lighting
•
Diffused side lighting with a supporting ‘fill’ ie. A reflector or secondary
light.
•
Devise your own lighting setup ( this could be highly coloured/ strongly
from above / below / involve silhouettes)
Make sure that your photos are not unintentionally overexposed/bleached out
by lighting that is too strong ….. either reduce the intensity of the light or alter
exposure by reducing aperture or using a faster shutter speed. A tripod is
likely to be necessary.
2) Investigate the use of lighting by Photographers.
•
Nadar (early photographers copied ideas of lighting from
painters such as Rembrandt)
•
Karsh (or others such as George Hurrell, Horst P Horst,
Mapplethorpe ) – showing ‘classic’ lighting techniques.
•
Richard Avedon (white backgrounds) or Thomas Ruff (harsh
frontal lighting).
•
Fashion photographers such as Nick Knight ( white backgrounds
and strong coloured shapes) or Tim Walker (pastel lighting).
3) Find examples of lighting by photographers that you particularly like and
comment on their work in your journal.
