Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 03
Western-North west Rips as well as the Level Floor. These lay WNW from Briers Island, stretching
offshore about 18 kilometers. Around the eastern end of the region, two parallel shoals, about 1?
miles across and getting 50-fathom depths between the two, increase from the 100-fathom depths
water on the muddy floor about these to reach 15 fathoms on the landward finish from the rips,
deepening to 35 fathoms off the traditional western part, in which the two ridges get together at
about 9 miles range from Briers Tropical island, to carry on to the westward on the Level Floor,
which reaches a distance of approximately 18 miles from your tropical island.
This Level Floor, deepening gradually westward, averages to get 50 fathoms of water spanning a
level, gravelly, and rocky base, to pitch lower suddenly, as do all the other ski slopes of this piece of
floor, towards the 100-fathom depth, which prevails on every side from the Rips. Currents are very
powerful here, as somewhere else during these waters, so that trawls are set only on the slack from
the tides, starting about 1 hour prior to and remaining down until about one hour right after these
times. Formerly this was a great floor for the getting of large herring. In these times The Rips
furnish good cod and haddock minn kota edge for the entire year, with hake abundant all the time on
the dirt on them. Actually; practically all the floor from this point south towards the Lurcher Shoal
furnishes great fishing for these species.
Boars Brain Floor (also called Internal Ground). This parallels the coast about 4 kilometers N. by NW
from your Brain, at Petit Passageway, into Saint. Marys Bay. This floor is all about 4 kilometers long
by 3 miles wide, having depths from 55 to 65 fathoms spanning http://www.minnkota.com/ a hard
bottom of broken ground. Cod are most numerous right here from April to July, inclusive; haddock
from July to September, comprehensive. Hake are normally found here in summer and early fall,
primarily around the dirty floor between this and the following fishing floor--the Outer Floor.
External Ground. This is about 3 miles lengthy by 2 kilometers wide, is situated about 9 kilometers
right out of the main on the same having as the Inner Ground, and is also visited from the same
species, their periods of large quantity on this bit of base becoming the same as around the previous
ground. Virtually all taking of ground fish on these grounds is done by hand-lining, though the
practice of trawl fishing has come more and more into use in recent years.
Horns and Head. A shoal of 68 fathoms, a couple of kilometers lengthy in a NNE and SSW path by 1
mile broad, is situated due north from your Boars Head of Long Island. Here is a hard base in which
good cod minn kota edge is had during the spring and summer. Hands-lining from your base is
carried on in summer time for pollock. Haddock are few here, these appearing mainly in the
summertime. Depths concerning the floor average 80 fathoms over mud and stones.
Sandy Cove Floor. Lies overseas NNE about 7 kilometers from Western Soft sand Cove. It has from
40 to 50 fathoms of water over a soft sand bottom, lying down parallel using the coast, about 4
kilometers lengthy by 2 miles wide. Cod are abundant on this ground from Might to July, hake
arriving somewhat later. This ground was mainly a hand-line spot, but in recent years minn kota
edge here has been done mostly by the trawl method, as were most of the grounds of this vicinity.
Internal Sandy Cove Grounds. About 2 kilometers NNW. from Western Soft sand Cove. These are 3
kilometers long NNE. and SSW. by ? distance wide. Both hand-lining and trawling methods of minn
kota edge are in use here, but the trawl is fast displacing the older gear. Depths are about 35
fathoms over a sandy base and 50 fathoms all about it. Varieties as well as their months of large
quantity are as on the Outer Soft sand Cove Ground. Nearly between Spencer Island and Cape Split
there exists good haddock fishing in July and Junecod and July fishing in June and May. Depths are
from 16 to 40 fathoms: the base is normally stony, with considerable areas of gravel. The fishing is
done primarily by trawling, rather brief "sets" being created. Off Cape Split are substantial
whirlpools, which, with springtime tides, are extremely dangerous. These sometimes run 9 knots an
hour.
Spencer Tropical island. Almost between Spencer Island and Cape Divided there exists great
haddock minn kota edge in July and Junecod and July minn kota edge in June and May. Depths come
from 16 to 40 fathoms: the bottom is generally stony, with substantial areas of gravel. The minn kota
edge is performed principally by trawling, quite brief "sets" becoming created. Off Cape Divided are
substantial whirlpools, which, with spring tides, are extremely hazardous. These sometimes operate
9 knots an hour.
Isle au Haute. Lies far up inside the bay 9 miles W. ? S. from Cape Chignecto. About this island are
good summer time haddock grounds with fair cod minn kota edge. The latter are used by trawling
principally. Depths concerning the island come from 9 to 14 fathoms, deepening overseas to 35, the
average depths being 22 to 27 fathoms. North from the island the base is normally soft sand;
somewhere else much of the ground is rocky or stony, with from time to time a little area of gravelly
ground. Towards the S. of this floor, towards the Nova Scotia shore and also to within 2 miles from
the coastline, the base is primarily muddy and of little account being a minn kota edge floor. Tides
are extremely heavy on all the inner grounds from the Bay of Fundy.
Quaco Ledges. This ground is situated about 10 miles SE, from Quaco Head and is out at reduced
tide, water concerning the ledges getting depths from 14 to 30 fathoms spanning a bottom of stones
and gravel, There is a heavy tide rip more than these ledges when protected, These furnish good
pollock fishing in the summertime months, and cod minn kota edge is carried on right here by hand-
coating from May to July.
Salmon Netting Floor. A salmon-netting ground is situated off about the Mouth Harbour and St, John
Harbour, where these seafood are netted, for the most part during June and July, when they are en
path to the St, John Stream, in which are their spawning reasons.
Ingalls Shoal. This is the title provided by a few of the anglers from the vicinity to a shoal lying about
midway among Digby, Nova Scotia, and Stage Lepreau, New Brunswick. This floor is about 9 miles
lengthy. NE. and SW., by about 5 miles wide. It is situated about 22 miles NW. from Digby and 18 or
20 miles from Point Lepreau. The depths come from 35 fathoms around the shoalest area (where is a
piece of ground some 4 miles long by 1 distance broad close to the middle of the financial institution,
lying inside a NE. and SW. direction), the bottom sloping far from this on every side to 47 as well as
55 fathoms in a few places. The bottom is mainly of sand and gravel or of little rocks more than a lot
of the floor except for the shoal components, in which it is primarily rocky. This piece of fishing
ground furnishes good cod fishing inJuly and June, and August, which previously was maintained by
hand-coating however, as elsewhere in the bay, is increasingly more becoming a trawl fishery.
pollock and Haddock are also taken here in reasonable quantities.
Mussel Shoal Floor. This can be a mussel-protected base lying down 8 kilometers ESE. from the
Eastern Wolf and 9 miles from Stage Lepreau. It operates in an E. and W. path and is a couple of
kilometers long by 1 distance broad. Depths are from 40 to 50 fathoms. This is a scallop and mussel
bed, where large cod are generally in large quantity in winter. Pollock are plenty here in June, and
hake are here as well as in the nearby Hake Floor in all of the summer season.
The Wolves. These make a team of small islands lying down N. ? E. from Grand Manan, faraway 8 or
10 miles. At the base of gravel and rocks, extending in regards to a distance from your shores of
these, in depths of from 18 to 34 fathoms, little boats and little vessels take a quantity of fish by
trawl and hand line. These are mainly haddock and cod grounds in June and May and pollock
grounds in June and July. Additionally it is a winter season lobster floor for Canadian fishermen.
The Wolves Financial institution. This financial institution lies involving the Wolves and Grand
Manan, distant about 8 miles from Eastern Quoddy Lighting, SE. ? E. Marks: The Coxcomb showing
to the eastward and just coming in contact with on the traditional western edge of Green Tropical
island: bring the heads of Grand Manan to create The Armchair, and White-colored Horse and
Simpson Tropical island into range. This can be a little-boat floor of scarcely a lot more than 6 acres,
with depths of 18 to 30 fathoms on the base of rocks and dirt. seasons and Species are as on The
Wolves. Southeast from The Wolves from 2 to 20 kilometers lies a piece of dirty bottom in which
hake are generally abundant in summer time.
vicinity and Campobello. Fair quantities of haddock and cod are normally found between Grand
Manan and the American shore within the Northern Channel (Grand Manan Channel) between
Western Quoddy Grand and Head Manan in depths of from 40 to 50 fathoms, spanning a base of
stones, dirt, and sand inJuly and June, and August and up to September 15, while hake is the most
abundant species existing.
No haddock or cod have these reasons in winter. Halibut are taken in similar numbers in the North
Channel inJune and May, and July. Pollock are taken on the traditional western side of Campobello
Tropical island, near the eastern side of Indian native Tropical island, and at the mouth from the
channel among Campobello and Casco Bay Island. In all these places are powerful tidal eddies. Most
are caught by hook and line in a small-boat fishery lasting from June 1 to September 1, although
some fish are taken by seining.
All around Deer and Campobello Island and on the brand new Brunswick shore as far as St. John are
located weirs, which provide large volumes of herring towards the factories at Eastport and Lubec.
Passamaquoddy Bay. [11] Depths listed here are from 10 to 24 fathoms, even 30 fathoms where the
St. Croix River goes by out in to the ocean. In general the bottom is muddy, although there are rocky
patches. The later arrivals may reach30 and 40, or even 60 pounds, although in most years a school
of cod "strikes" here in April, the early corners being mostly of small size. Haddock sometimes make
their appearance in the bay as soon as May 1, staying through August. This excellent fish is held of
little account by local fishermen, though hake, also, are present from June to September. A
substantial flounder market is building in these seas, the fish becoming taken in exclusively devised
traps as well as by the smaller otter trawls.
Passamaquoddy Bay is also a springtime netting ground for herring (food seafood), and there are
also numerous weirs functioning right here each year in whose catch would go to the factories of
Lubec and Eastport for canning as sardines. Pollock are extremely plentiful, and a great deal of
fishing for them is carried on from June to October, each by seine and hands collection. At times the
pollock completely fill the numerous herring weirs, until, using their figures, there is absolutely no
market for them. Pollock are also plentiful in the exact same season and therefore are taken from
the same techniques within the Saint. Croix River, though perhaps they leave the river a month
earlier in the fall.
The Mud Hake Grounds. These reasons extend about N. and S. between Campobello as well as the
Wolves and from about West Quoddy Head to Grand Manan. Their length is all about 15 to 18
kilometers and their size 3? miles. This can be a summer time floor a lot used by Canadian anglers
out of Campobello, Lavish Manan, and Beaver Harbor. It is stated to be the greatest hake reasons in
this vicinity. Depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms, and fishing is done by trawls and hands outlines.
There exists a stretch out of dirty base from Point Lepreau and Beaver Harbor to Grand Manan,
which furnishes great hake minn kota edge. In general, the bottom on the traditional western side of
the Bay of Fundy is muddy. This fishery is mainly carried on in the winter in small craft from Beaver
Harbor and Campobello, mostly by trawling, but some hand-lining is carried on, though off Beaver
Harbor on a mud bottom with 30 fathoms of water cod are found the year around.
Beaver Harbor. There exists a stretch of dirty bottom from Stage Lepreau and Beaver Harbor to
Grand Manan, which furnishes good hake minn kota edge. Generally, the bottom on the traditional
western part of the Bay of Fundy is dirty. This fishery is mainly carried on in the winter in small craft
from Beaver Harbor and Campobello, mostly by trawling, but some hand-lining is carried on,
although off Beaver Harbor on a mud bottom with 30 fathoms of water cod are found the year
around.
Grand Manan Financial institution. This financial institution is at the entry from the Bay of Fundy,
SW. ? S. from your southwest brain of Lavish Manan Island from which the northern area of the
financial institution is 15 miles distant. From Mount Desert Rock, E. by S., it really is 45 kilometers
distant. The financial institution is 10 kilometers long and 5 miles broad, stretching inside a NE. and
SW. path. The base is mainly stones and gravel, the depths operating from 24 to 45 fathoms.
Soundings of 18 and 21 fathoms are found on the northeast part.
Cod (especially plentiful once the June college is on the ground) and pollock are the principal
seafood. Haddock are not usually abundant, even though occasionally they may be plentiful within
the drop from late Sept to December; hake are relatively abundant around the dirt among Grand
Manan Bank and the Middle Ground (in The Gully). This is an excellent halibut financial institution,
the fish finding yourself in 33 to 60 fathoms in June and July; the southwest soundings and the
southeast soundings are most effective always.
The best fishing months are from Apr to October, when the fish arrived at this financial institution to
give. In the spring the fish, apart from halibut, are generally around the south west part, but later
(July to October) the very best fishing is experienced on the north edge of the floor. The very best
herring fishing for large herring (meals seafood) happens about this bank in July and June.
Generally, this can be a small-vessel floor fished by craft from Cutler, Eastport, Lavish Manan, and,
to some less degree, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, having an occasional visit by craft from Portland and
Rockland, chiefly trawlers of average dimension.
Tides run NE. in flood and SW. on the ebb and are very powerful, the deluge being the largest. minn
kota edge is somewhat difficult, it being necessary to make sets at the slack of the tides, getting the
gear over and traveling with the finish of the current, to take it up and come back with the tide's
return, because of these powerful currents.
Clarks Ground. This is situated SSE. from White-colored head 4? miles (just within the Bulkhead)
and has depths from 6 to 14 fathoms spanning a rocky base. Here are very heavy rips on the ebb
tide. This is an excellent summer time ground for pollock, cod, and halibut, and it is a great herring-
netting ground in the season.
Southern Brain Reef. The sequence of reefs extending S from White-colored Brain Tropical island is
actually all good floor in summer for cod and for pollock, also, once the herring schools have this
floor. Currents are extremely weighty right here. The ledges that make up this reef are more or less
connected. Amongst they are Brazil Shoal, Tinker, Internal Precious stone, External Diamond, Rans
and Crawleys Operator (Foul Ground), and the Aged Proprietor. While practically all this reef is
pollock Rans, ground and Crawleys maybe furnish the very best minn kota edge.
Gravelly. Lying about 5 or 6 miles SE. by S. from White Brain, this piece of bottom has about 25-
fathom depths spanning a rocky base. This is a cod and pollock floor within their period. While an
intermittent halibut is taken here in summer. Heavy tide rips occur here also.
The Soundings. Mentioned elsewhere as a herring floor, these lie outside the Bulkhead Rips 8 or 9
kilometers SE. from White-colored Head. You will find 30 or 40 fathoms of water here spanning a
rock and roll base, where pollock and cod are found in great deal inAugust and July, and September,
and a certain amount of halibut in summer time.
Bulkhead Rips, also called The Ripplings. This can be a long rocky barrier rising sharply from your
deep drinking water about it to depths of from 12 to 20 fathoms. Listed here are found hake,
haddock and cod and pollock in large quantity from June 1 to October 31. Apparently each one is
feeding on the small herring, so several within this vicinity at this season. Virtually no haddock are
located on the reasons in the close to neighborhood of Grand Manan during winter. The Ripplings
had been previously one of the primary fishing grounds of the herring netters but recently years
have been less productive.
Cards Reef. The depths listed here are from 28 to 30 fathoms, more than stones, as well as the
ground lies 3 kilometers S. by E. from your Old 9 and Proprietor miles from White-colored Brain.
This can be a haddock and cod floor from June to Nov.
Gannet Rock and roll. This is situated east of the Murre Ledges. All about it is good floor in from 40
to 70 fathoms over a hard base. Cod are normally found here in great deal from March to May, and
halibut are taken here from March to May, comprehensive.
Southeast Ground and Pea gravel Base. These lie S. of Seal Island, developing a comprehensive
piece of relatively degree ground extensive bit of relatively level floor. The western component bears
a bit E. of S. and the eastern part about ESE. from your island. It really is about 5 or 10 kilometers in
diameter. Even though this is really only one bit of ground, the eastern component is called the
original source the Southeast Floor as well as the traditional western component, from your nature
of its bottom, the Gravel Bottom. The eastern portion is dirty and it has 40 to 60 fathoms. The
traditional western has 35 to 40 fathoms. This is a good cod ground in spring and winter. Haddock
can be found from November to Mar, inclusive; hake in summer. Fishing is done mainly by trawling
by sloops and vessels.
Machias Seal Tropical island. Nineteen kilometers E. by S. from Moosabec Lighting. This furnishes
great floor within the water about it, where depths come from 15 to 54 fathoms spanning a generally
rocky and irregular bottom. In summercod and haddock, and pollock are abundant right here, the
cod and haddock staying all winter season. The fishery is carried on mainly by the smaller sized
vessels from Maine plug-ins, primarily these from Cutler, with an periodic visit by bigger art, usually
from the Portland fleet. This ground will not be much frequented during winter. Minn Kota Edge is
done by trawling and hand-coating.
Gannet Rock and roll. This is situated eastern of the Murre Ledges. About it really is good ground in
from 40 to 70 fathoms over a difficult base. Cod are normally found within good number from Mar to
May, and halibut are taken here from Mar to Might, inclusive.
[Table I--Fishing Grounds of the Bay of Fundy Area of the Gulf of Maine, showing the principal
varieties taken on them.]
[Footnote 9: It (Fundy) had not been obviously pointed out by Verrazano (1524) neither in the
document of Gomez (1525), who most likely noticed something of their entrance but fog or other
undesirable conditions might have avoided him from observing it more accurately, but we discover
in the initially old Spanish charts, within the latitude in which it needs to be, brands like these:
Rio hondo or 'fondo' (a deep stream) or Bahia Hondo (a deep bay), or Golfo (a gulf) as soon as, also
'La Bahia de los angeles ensenada', the bay from the deep inlet.
Physician Kohl, right here offered additional states "On the charts of the 17th and earlier part of the
eighteenth century, especially, it is written Bay of Funda. I think that this name increased out from
and is a revival of, the existing Spanish language name 'Bahia fondo'".]
[Footnote 10: It really is satisfying to announce the winter season of 1925-26 saw a big run of
herring about this floor, where for a number of years previous we have seen virtually no minn kota
edge with this species.]
[Footnote 11: According to Porter C ". Bliss, a thorough college student of the Indian native dialects,
Acadie is a pure Micmac term which means place. In Nova Scotia and Maine it really is used by the
Indians in structure with other words, as with Pestum-Acadie; and in Etchemin, Pascatum-Acadie,
now Passamaquoddy, which means 'the host to the pollocks'" (Doctor Kohl, _Dis. of Maine_, p. 234)
"This derivation is dubious. The Micmac wordQuoddy and Kady, or Cadie indicates simply a place or
region and is also correctly used in conjunction with various other noun; as, for instance, Pestum-
oquoddy (Passamaquoddy), the place of pollocks." (Dawson and Hand, in _Canadian Antiquarian and
Numismatic Journal_)
"La Cadie: Alternatively, Arcadie: The word is reported to be derived from the Indian Aquoddiaukie,
or Aquoddie, supposed to imply the seafood known as a pollock. If we may accept the same
authority, derives its name from the same origin., the Bay of Passamaquoddy, 'great pollock water,'"
(Potter, in _Historic Publication_, I, 84)]
INNER Reasons
Below this going are outlined those reasons of the innermost sequence ofshoals and ledges, and
"angling spots", patches of rocky and gravelly base, the deeper water between them becoming over
the muddy ground, which collection the coastline from the Gulf of Maine, making from it a nearly
continuous piece of fishing ground. In the Reports of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, on
which all the statistics of the capture and value of the various varieties offered in this document are
based, these numbers are collected underneath the going "Shore".
The larger and more essential of these reasons are outcroppings across the side of the 50-fathom
curve and lay at distances different from 12 to 20 miles overseas; but there are lots of within this
collection, and where the strong drinking water from the Gulf of Maine expands so far inshore some
are near in to the land. Thus, virtually all are inside comparatively easy achieve for the smaller craft
(in which these all now have energy) and thus furnish productive minn kota edge for a big fleet of
gill sloops and netters (small craft of from 5 to 10 tons net) and to the myriad of "below-ton"
watercraft (of under 5 tons net), each one of these becoming empowered to run offshore, "create a
set up," and return the same day.
Using the uncertainties of the weather as well as the hazards from the winter minn kota edge,
frequently the large vessels also follow this practice on those not too regular "seafood times" (when
problems permit fishing "outdoors ") that intercede involving the storms; and with the scarcity of
seafood in the marketplaces usual to the period and the consequent better cost for the capture, with
ordinary fishing good fortune they are well paid for doing this.

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 03

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 03 Western-North west Rips as well as the Level Floor. These lay WNW from Briers Island, stretching offshore about 18 kilometers. Around the eastern end of the region, two parallel shoals, about 1? miles across and getting 50-fathom depths between the two, increase from the 100-fathom depths water on the muddy floor about these to reach 15 fathoms on the landward finish from the rips, deepening to 35 fathoms off the traditional western part, in which the two ridges get together at about 9 miles range from Briers Tropical island, to carry on to the westward on the Level Floor, which reaches a distance of approximately 18 miles from your tropical island. This Level Floor, deepening gradually westward, averages to get 50 fathoms of water spanning a level, gravelly, and rocky base, to pitch lower suddenly, as do all the other ski slopes of this piece of floor, towards the 100-fathom depth, which prevails on every side from the Rips. Currents are very powerful here, as somewhere else during these waters, so that trawls are set only on the slack from the tides, starting about 1 hour prior to and remaining down until about one hour right after these times. Formerly this was a great floor for the getting of large herring. In these times The Rips furnish good cod and haddock minn kota edge for the entire year, with hake abundant all the time on the dirt on them. Actually; practically all the floor from this point south towards the Lurcher Shoal furnishes great fishing for these species. Boars Brain Floor (also called Internal Ground). This parallels the coast about 4 kilometers N. by NW from your Brain, at Petit Passageway, into Saint. Marys Bay. This floor is all about 4 kilometers long by 3 miles wide, having depths from 55 to 65 fathoms spanning http://www.minnkota.com/ a hard bottom of broken ground. Cod are most numerous right here from April to July, inclusive; haddock from July to September, comprehensive. Hake are normally found here in summer and early fall, primarily around the dirty floor between this and the following fishing floor--the Outer Floor. External Ground. This is about 3 miles lengthy by 2 kilometers wide, is situated about 9 kilometers right out of the main on the same having as the Inner Ground, and is also visited from the same species, their periods of large quantity on this bit of base becoming the same as around the previous ground. Virtually all taking of ground fish on these grounds is done by hand-lining, though the practice of trawl fishing has come more and more into use in recent years. Horns and Head. A shoal of 68 fathoms, a couple of kilometers lengthy in a NNE and SSW path by 1 mile broad, is situated due north from your Boars Head of Long Island. Here is a hard base in which good cod minn kota edge is had during the spring and summer. Hands-lining from your base is carried on in summer time for pollock. Haddock are few here, these appearing mainly in the summertime. Depths concerning the floor average 80 fathoms over mud and stones. Sandy Cove Floor. Lies overseas NNE about 7 kilometers from Western Soft sand Cove. It has from 40 to 50 fathoms of water over a soft sand bottom, lying down parallel using the coast, about 4 kilometers lengthy by 2 miles wide. Cod are abundant on this ground from Might to July, hake arriving somewhat later. This ground was mainly a hand-line spot, but in recent years minn kota edge here has been done mostly by the trawl method, as were most of the grounds of this vicinity.
  • 2. Internal Sandy Cove Grounds. About 2 kilometers NNW. from Western Soft sand Cove. These are 3 kilometers long NNE. and SSW. by ? distance wide. Both hand-lining and trawling methods of minn kota edge are in use here, but the trawl is fast displacing the older gear. Depths are about 35 fathoms over a sandy base and 50 fathoms all about it. Varieties as well as their months of large quantity are as on the Outer Soft sand Cove Ground. Nearly between Spencer Island and Cape Split there exists good haddock fishing in July and Junecod and July fishing in June and May. Depths are from 16 to 40 fathoms: the base is normally stony, with considerable areas of gravel. The fishing is done primarily by trawling, rather brief "sets" being created. Off Cape Split are substantial whirlpools, which, with springtime tides, are extremely dangerous. These sometimes run 9 knots an hour. Spencer Tropical island. Almost between Spencer Island and Cape Divided there exists great haddock minn kota edge in July and Junecod and July minn kota edge in June and May. Depths come from 16 to 40 fathoms: the bottom is generally stony, with substantial areas of gravel. The minn kota edge is performed principally by trawling, quite brief "sets" becoming created. Off Cape Divided are substantial whirlpools, which, with spring tides, are extremely hazardous. These sometimes operate 9 knots an hour. Isle au Haute. Lies far up inside the bay 9 miles W. ? S. from Cape Chignecto. About this island are good summer time haddock grounds with fair cod minn kota edge. The latter are used by trawling principally. Depths concerning the island come from 9 to 14 fathoms, deepening overseas to 35, the average depths being 22 to 27 fathoms. North from the island the base is normally soft sand; somewhere else much of the ground is rocky or stony, with from time to time a little area of gravelly ground. Towards the S. of this floor, towards the Nova Scotia shore and also to within 2 miles from the coastline, the base is primarily muddy and of little account being a minn kota edge floor. Tides are extremely heavy on all the inner grounds from the Bay of Fundy. Quaco Ledges. This ground is situated about 10 miles SE, from Quaco Head and is out at reduced tide, water concerning the ledges getting depths from 14 to 30 fathoms spanning a bottom of stones and gravel, There is a heavy tide rip more than these ledges when protected, These furnish good pollock fishing in the summertime months, and cod minn kota edge is carried on right here by hand- coating from May to July.
  • 3. Salmon Netting Floor. A salmon-netting ground is situated off about the Mouth Harbour and St, John Harbour, where these seafood are netted, for the most part during June and July, when they are en path to the St, John Stream, in which are their spawning reasons. Ingalls Shoal. This is the title provided by a few of the anglers from the vicinity to a shoal lying about midway among Digby, Nova Scotia, and Stage Lepreau, New Brunswick. This floor is about 9 miles lengthy. NE. and SW., by about 5 miles wide. It is situated about 22 miles NW. from Digby and 18 or 20 miles from Point Lepreau. The depths come from 35 fathoms around the shoalest area (where is a piece of ground some 4 miles long by 1 distance broad close to the middle of the financial institution, lying inside a NE. and SW. direction), the bottom sloping far from this on every side to 47 as well as 55 fathoms in a few places. The bottom is mainly of sand and gravel or of little rocks more than a lot of the floor except for the shoal components, in which it is primarily rocky. This piece of fishing ground furnishes good cod fishing inJuly and June, and August, which previously was maintained by hand-coating however, as elsewhere in the bay, is increasingly more becoming a trawl fishery. pollock and Haddock are also taken here in reasonable quantities. Mussel Shoal Floor. This can be a mussel-protected base lying down 8 kilometers ESE. from the Eastern Wolf and 9 miles from Stage Lepreau. It operates in an E. and W. path and is a couple of kilometers long by 1 distance broad. Depths are from 40 to 50 fathoms. This is a scallop and mussel bed, where large cod are generally in large quantity in winter. Pollock are plenty here in June, and hake are here as well as in the nearby Hake Floor in all of the summer season. The Wolves. These make a team of small islands lying down N. ? E. from Grand Manan, faraway 8 or 10 miles. At the base of gravel and rocks, extending in regards to a distance from your shores of these, in depths of from 18 to 34 fathoms, little boats and little vessels take a quantity of fish by trawl and hand line. These are mainly haddock and cod grounds in June and May and pollock grounds in June and July. Additionally it is a winter season lobster floor for Canadian fishermen. The Wolves Financial institution. This financial institution lies involving the Wolves and Grand Manan, distant about 8 miles from Eastern Quoddy Lighting, SE. ? E. Marks: The Coxcomb showing
  • 4. to the eastward and just coming in contact with on the traditional western edge of Green Tropical island: bring the heads of Grand Manan to create The Armchair, and White-colored Horse and Simpson Tropical island into range. This can be a little-boat floor of scarcely a lot more than 6 acres, with depths of 18 to 30 fathoms on the base of rocks and dirt. seasons and Species are as on The Wolves. Southeast from The Wolves from 2 to 20 kilometers lies a piece of dirty bottom in which hake are generally abundant in summer time. vicinity and Campobello. Fair quantities of haddock and cod are normally found between Grand Manan and the American shore within the Northern Channel (Grand Manan Channel) between Western Quoddy Grand and Head Manan in depths of from 40 to 50 fathoms, spanning a base of stones, dirt, and sand inJuly and June, and August and up to September 15, while hake is the most abundant species existing. No haddock or cod have these reasons in winter. Halibut are taken in similar numbers in the North Channel inJune and May, and July. Pollock are taken on the traditional western side of Campobello Tropical island, near the eastern side of Indian native Tropical island, and at the mouth from the channel among Campobello and Casco Bay Island. In all these places are powerful tidal eddies. Most are caught by hook and line in a small-boat fishery lasting from June 1 to September 1, although some fish are taken by seining. All around Deer and Campobello Island and on the brand new Brunswick shore as far as St. John are located weirs, which provide large volumes of herring towards the factories at Eastport and Lubec. Passamaquoddy Bay. [11] Depths listed here are from 10 to 24 fathoms, even 30 fathoms where the St. Croix River goes by out in to the ocean. In general the bottom is muddy, although there are rocky patches. The later arrivals may reach30 and 40, or even 60 pounds, although in most years a school of cod "strikes" here in April, the early corners being mostly of small size. Haddock sometimes make their appearance in the bay as soon as May 1, staying through August. This excellent fish is held of little account by local fishermen, though hake, also, are present from June to September. A substantial flounder market is building in these seas, the fish becoming taken in exclusively devised traps as well as by the smaller otter trawls.
  • 5. Passamaquoddy Bay is also a springtime netting ground for herring (food seafood), and there are also numerous weirs functioning right here each year in whose catch would go to the factories of Lubec and Eastport for canning as sardines. Pollock are extremely plentiful, and a great deal of fishing for them is carried on from June to October, each by seine and hands collection. At times the pollock completely fill the numerous herring weirs, until, using their figures, there is absolutely no market for them. Pollock are also plentiful in the exact same season and therefore are taken from the same techniques within the Saint. Croix River, though perhaps they leave the river a month earlier in the fall. The Mud Hake Grounds. These reasons extend about N. and S. between Campobello as well as the Wolves and from about West Quoddy Head to Grand Manan. Their length is all about 15 to 18 kilometers and their size 3? miles. This can be a summer time floor a lot used by Canadian anglers out of Campobello, Lavish Manan, and Beaver Harbor. It is stated to be the greatest hake reasons in this vicinity. Depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms, and fishing is done by trawls and hands outlines. There exists a stretch out of dirty base from Point Lepreau and Beaver Harbor to Grand Manan, which furnishes great hake minn kota edge. In general, the bottom on the traditional western side of the Bay of Fundy is muddy. This fishery is mainly carried on in the winter in small craft from Beaver Harbor and Campobello, mostly by trawling, but some hand-lining is carried on, though off Beaver Harbor on a mud bottom with 30 fathoms of water cod are found the year around. Beaver Harbor. There exists a stretch of dirty bottom from Stage Lepreau and Beaver Harbor to Grand Manan, which furnishes good hake minn kota edge. Generally, the bottom on the traditional western part of the Bay of Fundy is dirty. This fishery is mainly carried on in the winter in small craft from Beaver Harbor and Campobello, mostly by trawling, but some hand-lining is carried on, although off Beaver Harbor on a mud bottom with 30 fathoms of water cod are found the year around. Grand Manan Financial institution. This financial institution is at the entry from the Bay of Fundy, SW. ? S. from your southwest brain of Lavish Manan Island from which the northern area of the financial institution is 15 miles distant. From Mount Desert Rock, E. by S., it really is 45 kilometers distant. The financial institution is 10 kilometers long and 5 miles broad, stretching inside a NE. and SW. path. The base is mainly stones and gravel, the depths operating from 24 to 45 fathoms. Soundings of 18 and 21 fathoms are found on the northeast part. Cod (especially plentiful once the June college is on the ground) and pollock are the principal seafood. Haddock are not usually abundant, even though occasionally they may be plentiful within the drop from late Sept to December; hake are relatively abundant around the dirt among Grand Manan Bank and the Middle Ground (in The Gully). This is an excellent halibut financial institution, the fish finding yourself in 33 to 60 fathoms in June and July; the southwest soundings and the southeast soundings are most effective always. The best fishing months are from Apr to October, when the fish arrived at this financial institution to give. In the spring the fish, apart from halibut, are generally around the south west part, but later (July to October) the very best fishing is experienced on the north edge of the floor. The very best herring fishing for large herring (meals seafood) happens about this bank in July and June. Generally, this can be a small-vessel floor fished by craft from Cutler, Eastport, Lavish Manan, and, to some less degree, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, having an occasional visit by craft from Portland and Rockland, chiefly trawlers of average dimension.
  • 6. Tides run NE. in flood and SW. on the ebb and are very powerful, the deluge being the largest. minn kota edge is somewhat difficult, it being necessary to make sets at the slack of the tides, getting the gear over and traveling with the finish of the current, to take it up and come back with the tide's return, because of these powerful currents. Clarks Ground. This is situated SSE. from White-colored head 4? miles (just within the Bulkhead) and has depths from 6 to 14 fathoms spanning a rocky base. Here are very heavy rips on the ebb tide. This is an excellent summer time ground for pollock, cod, and halibut, and it is a great herring- netting ground in the season. Southern Brain Reef. The sequence of reefs extending S from White-colored Brain Tropical island is actually all good floor in summer for cod and for pollock, also, once the herring schools have this floor. Currents are extremely weighty right here. The ledges that make up this reef are more or less connected. Amongst they are Brazil Shoal, Tinker, Internal Precious stone, External Diamond, Rans and Crawleys Operator (Foul Ground), and the Aged Proprietor. While practically all this reef is pollock Rans, ground and Crawleys maybe furnish the very best minn kota edge. Gravelly. Lying about 5 or 6 miles SE. by S. from White Brain, this piece of bottom has about 25- fathom depths spanning a rocky base. This is a cod and pollock floor within their period. While an intermittent halibut is taken here in summer. Heavy tide rips occur here also. The Soundings. Mentioned elsewhere as a herring floor, these lie outside the Bulkhead Rips 8 or 9 kilometers SE. from White-colored Head. You will find 30 or 40 fathoms of water here spanning a rock and roll base, where pollock and cod are found in great deal inAugust and July, and September, and a certain amount of halibut in summer time. Bulkhead Rips, also called The Ripplings. This can be a long rocky barrier rising sharply from your deep drinking water about it to depths of from 12 to 20 fathoms. Listed here are found hake, haddock and cod and pollock in large quantity from June 1 to October 31. Apparently each one is feeding on the small herring, so several within this vicinity at this season. Virtually no haddock are located on the reasons in the close to neighborhood of Grand Manan during winter. The Ripplings had been previously one of the primary fishing grounds of the herring netters but recently years have been less productive. Cards Reef. The depths listed here are from 28 to 30 fathoms, more than stones, as well as the ground lies 3 kilometers S. by E. from your Old 9 and Proprietor miles from White-colored Brain. This can be a haddock and cod floor from June to Nov.
  • 7. Gannet Rock and roll. This is situated east of the Murre Ledges. All about it is good floor in from 40 to 70 fathoms over a hard base. Cod are normally found here in great deal from March to May, and halibut are taken here from March to May, comprehensive. Southeast Ground and Pea gravel Base. These lie S. of Seal Island, developing a comprehensive piece of relatively degree ground extensive bit of relatively level floor. The western component bears a bit E. of S. and the eastern part about ESE. from your island. It really is about 5 or 10 kilometers in diameter. Even though this is really only one bit of ground, the eastern component is called the original source the Southeast Floor as well as the traditional western component, from your nature of its bottom, the Gravel Bottom. The eastern portion is dirty and it has 40 to 60 fathoms. The traditional western has 35 to 40 fathoms. This is a good cod ground in spring and winter. Haddock can be found from November to Mar, inclusive; hake in summer. Fishing is done mainly by trawling by sloops and vessels. Machias Seal Tropical island. Nineteen kilometers E. by S. from Moosabec Lighting. This furnishes great floor within the water about it, where depths come from 15 to 54 fathoms spanning a generally rocky and irregular bottom. In summercod and haddock, and pollock are abundant right here, the cod and haddock staying all winter season. The fishery is carried on mainly by the smaller sized vessels from Maine plug-ins, primarily these from Cutler, with an periodic visit by bigger art, usually from the Portland fleet. This ground will not be much frequented during winter. Minn Kota Edge is done by trawling and hand-coating. Gannet Rock and roll. This is situated eastern of the Murre Ledges. About it really is good ground in from 40 to 70 fathoms over a difficult base. Cod are normally found within good number from Mar to May, and halibut are taken here from Mar to Might, inclusive. [Table I--Fishing Grounds of the Bay of Fundy Area of the Gulf of Maine, showing the principal varieties taken on them.] [Footnote 9: It (Fundy) had not been obviously pointed out by Verrazano (1524) neither in the document of Gomez (1525), who most likely noticed something of their entrance but fog or other undesirable conditions might have avoided him from observing it more accurately, but we discover in the initially old Spanish charts, within the latitude in which it needs to be, brands like these: Rio hondo or 'fondo' (a deep stream) or Bahia Hondo (a deep bay), or Golfo (a gulf) as soon as, also 'La Bahia de los angeles ensenada', the bay from the deep inlet.
  • 8. Physician Kohl, right here offered additional states "On the charts of the 17th and earlier part of the eighteenth century, especially, it is written Bay of Funda. I think that this name increased out from and is a revival of, the existing Spanish language name 'Bahia fondo'".] [Footnote 10: It really is satisfying to announce the winter season of 1925-26 saw a big run of herring about this floor, where for a number of years previous we have seen virtually no minn kota edge with this species.] [Footnote 11: According to Porter C ". Bliss, a thorough college student of the Indian native dialects, Acadie is a pure Micmac term which means place. In Nova Scotia and Maine it really is used by the Indians in structure with other words, as with Pestum-Acadie; and in Etchemin, Pascatum-Acadie, now Passamaquoddy, which means 'the host to the pollocks'" (Doctor Kohl, _Dis. of Maine_, p. 234) "This derivation is dubious. The Micmac wordQuoddy and Kady, or Cadie indicates simply a place or region and is also correctly used in conjunction with various other noun; as, for instance, Pestum- oquoddy (Passamaquoddy), the place of pollocks." (Dawson and Hand, in _Canadian Antiquarian and Numismatic Journal_) "La Cadie: Alternatively, Arcadie: The word is reported to be derived from the Indian Aquoddiaukie, or Aquoddie, supposed to imply the seafood known as a pollock. If we may accept the same authority, derives its name from the same origin., the Bay of Passamaquoddy, 'great pollock water,'" (Potter, in _Historic Publication_, I, 84)] INNER Reasons Below this going are outlined those reasons of the innermost sequence ofshoals and ledges, and "angling spots", patches of rocky and gravelly base, the deeper water between them becoming over the muddy ground, which collection the coastline from the Gulf of Maine, making from it a nearly continuous piece of fishing ground. In the Reports of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, on which all the statistics of the capture and value of the various varieties offered in this document are based, these numbers are collected underneath the going "Shore". The larger and more essential of these reasons are outcroppings across the side of the 50-fathom curve and lay at distances different from 12 to 20 miles overseas; but there are lots of within this collection, and where the strong drinking water from the Gulf of Maine expands so far inshore some are near in to the land. Thus, virtually all are inside comparatively easy achieve for the smaller craft (in which these all now have energy) and thus furnish productive minn kota edge for a big fleet of gill sloops and netters (small craft of from 5 to 10 tons net) and to the myriad of "below-ton" watercraft (of under 5 tons net), each one of these becoming empowered to run offshore, "create a set up," and return the same day. Using the uncertainties of the weather as well as the hazards from the winter minn kota edge, frequently the large vessels also follow this practice on those not too regular "seafood times" (when problems permit fishing "outdoors ") that intercede involving the storms; and with the scarcity of seafood in the marketplaces usual to the period and the consequent better cost for the capture, with ordinary fishing good fortune they are well paid for doing this.
