Onboarding is always a challenge for SMEs and is often done badly. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The approach to onboarding: pilling a huge stack of reading or a series of off the shelf training modules doesn't explain how the organization truly functions.

1. Onboarding New Hires
Can Be Done Right
Onboarding is always a challenge for SMEs and is often
done badly. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The
approach to onboarding: pilling a huge stack of reading
or a series of off the shelf training modules doesn't
explain how the organization truly functions. Take these
3 steps to help your new team member see how work
gets done and what he can do to add immediate value:
1.
Start in the hiring process. Onboarding starts with interviews. During interviews, include expose all
candidates to the organization's culture. Don't oversell your company; be accurate about who you are and
how you work as a team.
2.
Introduce her to the right people. Identify key team members that your new hire needs to know. Early
introductions will foster building relationships right away.
3.
Get her working. Put her on projects where she is supported by others and can start contributing right away.
Job shadowing is another great strategy. Sitting in an office or cubicle alone for 5-10 days is not the right
start!
