During an action potential, sodium ions rush into the neuron through open sodium channels, causing rapid depolarization. This is called the rising phase. Then, potassium channels open and potassium rushes out as sodium channels close, repolarizing the membrane back to its resting potential. This falling phase completes the action potential and restores the neuron to its resting state.
