2. THE POINT
We saw that giving is an overflow of our love for God. We give
because we love God. It is an act that we undertake freely and
joyfully. God has so designed things that only His lovers will sustain
and support His work. Today we want to talk about how to give to
God. What do you give God and how do you give to Him? Do you just
give anything? The scriptures liken our relationship with God with
the husband and wife relationship. In the relationship of a husband
and wife, they must seek to please each other (I Corinthians 7: 33-
34). God loves us and He gave the best we could ever have. As we
respond to His love, we must seek to please Him, honour Him. David
was a man after the heart of God. He was a giver to God. How did he
do it? As we learn how David gave to God, we will be inspired to give
God our tithes and offerings in the way that they would be
acceptable and honourable to God.
3. I CHRONICLES 29:10-13
10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole
assembly, saying, "Praise be to you, O Lord , God of our father
Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, O Lord , is the greatness and the power and the glory
and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in
heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord , is the kingdom; you
are exalted as head over all.
12 Wealth and honour come from you; you are the ruler of all
things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give
strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious
name.
4. I CHRONICLES 29:14-17
14 "But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to
give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have
given you only what comes from your hand.
15 We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our
forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.
16 O Lord our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided
for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your
hand, and all of it belongs to you.
17 I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with
integrity. All these things have I given willingly and with honest
intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who
are here have given to you.
5. I CHRONICLES 29:18-20
18 O Lord , God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep this
desire in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts
loyal to you.
19 And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion to keep
your
commands, requirements and decrees and to do everything to
build the palatial structure for which I have provided."
20 Then David said to the whole assembly, "Praise the Lord your
God." So they all praised the Lord , the God of their fathers; they
bowed low and fell prostrate before the Lord and the king.
6. GIVING: AN OUTFLOW OF LOVE
CAIN AND ABEL KNEW THEY HAD TO GIVE TO GOD. BUT
THOUGH IT WAS A PERSONAL INITIATIVE, GOD DID NOT
JUST ACCEPT IT. HE TOOK THE OFFERING OF ABEL AND
REFUSED THE OFFERING OF CAIN
GENESIS 3:3
3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an
offering to the Lord .
4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The
Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very
angry, and his face was downcast.
7. WHY WAS THE OFFERING OF CAIN REJECTED?
CAIN JUST GAVE ANYTHING. IT WAS NOT THE FRUIT OF A
SELECTION.
GENESIS 4:3
3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an
offering to the Lord .
4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The
Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very
angry, and his face was downcast.
8. WHY WAS THE OFFERING OF ABEL ACCEPTED?
ABEL SELECTED THE FAT PORTIONS OF THE FIRSTBORN OF
HIS FLOCK. HE SELECTED WHAT HE WAS GOING TO GIVE
GOD. HIS GIFT HAD THE MARKS OF HONOR.
GENESIS 4:3
3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an
offering to the Lord .
4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The
Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very
angry, and his face was downcast.
9. GOD ACCEPTED THE OFFERING OF ABEL
GOD ACCEPTED ABEL AND HIS GIFT
GENESIS 4:4
3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an
offering to the Lord .
4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The
Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very
angry, and his face was downcast.
10. GOD ACCEPTED THE OFFERING OF ABEL
WE MUST FIRST SEEK TO BE ACCEPTED BY
GOD AND THEN SEEK OUR GIFT TO BE
ACCEPTED BY GOD
11. ABRAHAM GAVE TO GOD
Genesis 14:15
15 During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them,
pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
16 He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions,
together with the women and the other people.
17After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him,
the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's
Valley).
18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of
God Most High,
19 and he blessed Abram, saying, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of
heaven and earth.
20 And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand."
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
13. ABRAHAM GAVE HIS TITHES TO GOD
TITHES EXISTED BEFORE THE LAW. IT WAS AN
OUTFLOW OF LOVE AND GRATITUDE FROM THE
HEART OF ABRAHAM WHO KNEW THAT GOD
WAS WITH HIM.
Genesis 14:15

Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.
20 And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies
into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
14. JACOB GAVE HIS TITHES TO GOD
JACOB PROMISED HIS TITHES TO GOD IN GRATITUDE
OF HIS PRESENCE IN HIS LIFE. YOU GIVE A TITHE TO
GOD OUT OF WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU
Genesis 28:20-22
20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch
over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes
to wear
21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the Lord will be my God
22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all
that you give me I will give you a tenth."
15. TITHES IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
JESUS DID NOT ABOLISH TITHES.
HE POSITIONED TITHING
Matthew 23:23
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you
hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and
cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of
the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have
practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.”
