Negative news attracts readers' attention according to research on news values. For example, a student protest over rising tuition fees was widely covered. Poorer students will have difficulty affording higher education, raising questions about the decision. Local newspapers focus on issues affecting their area. A bombing in the borough would be major local news. Articles on mysteries can attract readers for weeks or years as theories emerge. Unusual local stories about students taking action can also engage readers while keeping coverage informal. Exclusives on major areas in a borough can draw interest for a local paper.
2. By conducting a lot of research I have come to the conclusion that negative news is the key selling point for many well known newspapers. There scare mongering headlines attract the reader’s attention by displaying something controversial or negative to attract the interest of the mass audience. For example the student protest that had gone underway because of the rise of higher tuition fee was a huge concept after the Tories and liberal democrat accepted the decision in making higher education expensive. The fact that poorer students will find this increase extremely difficult raises many questions in why this action has been taken. This is the fuel and information the public need to know, as the key interest in which they can understand debate and sympathise with. Projecting a negative persona which reflects on the criminals character which gives the impression that she is part of a bad affiliation. Scare Mongering Headline
3. Proximity I found dealing with proximity quiet easy as our task was to create a local newspaper. So everything I include should be about the borough itself and nothing irrelevant, which does not fit the criteria of my newspaper. Knowing this I only included outside problems if it had an effect on our county or has local residence involved.
4. The bombing that took place in that area must have been huge news for local stories Currency Articles and news such as this have been going on for decades. If articles could be produced for local areas during intense moments and events, then it can surely manage to attract readers. Articles to do with mystery and enigma may take the spotlight for few weeks or maybe even years to come. The actions of September 11thhas led to conspiracy theories to other broad speculations. The media waits till something happens which can change the course of the subject. This is usually led on by weeks and weeks of the same thing, till a result is finally adhered to. ? ? ?
5. Uniqueness Having a unique headline is important to keep the audience entertained, but since my newspaper is local it may lack in those fields. Many newspapers use different reporters to go all over the world and to each corner to find the latest spoof. But I want to leave my newspaper as being a informative formal newspaper, rather than a sheer pile of entertainment. So I'd only include articles having an effect on the community or causing inconvenience or trauma. For the main headline I decided to keep the story local, but talk about something unusual such as students taking charge and action, something not always portrayed through teenagers.
6. Simplicity Most people are busy with their day to day lives and have a minimum amount of time to catch up on the news. Since my newspaper is local it would most likely be delivered around residential areas and local newsagents rather then something you’d find in a train. So simplicity is often not the case. But obviously I don’t want the intention to bore my audience with amounts which they cannot be bothered to read, but instead summarise in a quick but articulate manor when talking about a specific subject. Masthead, Main Image, Article all arranged in a simple well contracted way, which makes it much simpler to read. Adverts are usually presented at the bottom.
7. Elite Nations of People The U.K is one of the worlds most important and powerful country where there is a worldwide appeal for news relating to it. Wembley arguably has to be one of the most famous areas to withstand one of the most renowned stadiums across the continent. Prior to visiting the Wembley stadium, students from Germany visited Copland School and explored the rest of the borough. So having a landmark that attracts people from all over the world can have a huge effect when important news about it comes out.
8. Exclusivity Exclusive Event Having something exclusive is quiet important so other newspapers don’t get the upper hand. Since my newspaper focuses on local issues I can get exclusive information about certain things that other newspapers won’t be able to get. For example people living around a specific area won’t always have a brand that represents them. So having a story related to major areas in a borough can attract enough people for the production of the paper. So having relevant exclusivity is always an advantage.
