Understanding what’s going on with your skin can
sometimes become overwhelming, even confusing! Keep
it simple and remember the basic fundamentals of the
skin...
COLLAGEN...The Essential Element
Healthy, youthful skin produces an
abundance of collagen, which
increases moisture to improve skin
hydration. The evidence is in the
suppleness, strengthen, and vibrance
of the skin.
Collagen is an integral part of the skin.
In fact, more than 70% of the skin is
made of this substantial structural
protein. It is the foundation of our skin
structure.
Unfortunately, with time and/or continual
damage, this structure loses its ability to retain moisture. The
skin weakens and becomes thinner, making it susceptible to
damage, imbalance, dryness, wrinkles, etc.
ELASTIN...The Natural Complement
The elastin protein plays a crucial role in skin hydration
because of its ability to impact the elasticity and firmness of the
skin. Elastin functions like an elastic rubber band that binds
moisture-retaining collagen fibers together, which gives the skin
resilience and firmness.
When the skin is young, the elastin fibers are thin and
stretchable, which allows the skin to be fresh and supple. The
aging process brings about changes in the dermal layers,
which result in the loss of elasticity and moisture within the
connective tissues. This is when skin laxity and imbalance
becomes more noticeable.
MOISTURE...
The Final Touch
The skin is made up of collagen,
elastin, and almost all the rest are
moisture-retention elements
known as Natural Moisturizing
Factors (NMF). The main task of
our NMF’s is to hydrate the upper
layers of the skin.
These outer skin layers reflect the
health of the deeper skin layers.
With time and damage from environmental aggressors, the
skin loses its capacity to absorb moisture and starts to show
signs of premature aging.
To put it in perspective, young skin contains about 13%
moisture. As the skin ages, it can be as low as 7%. Thus,
protecting and replenishing moisture becomes crucial for
healthy, glowing skin.
