Discussion Questions
1. When has your level of performance been directly affected by your motivation?
By your ability? By the environment?
Motivation - My manager at my part-time workplace clearly stated that my wages will
not be increased no matter how long I have worked for the business because I am only
a part-time worker. Therefore, I lost my motivation in my work and I no longer desire
to work as hard.
Ability - I was promoted from a waiter to a cashier without sufficient training.
Therefore, my level of performance dropped significantly due to insufficient
knowledge to operate the point-of-sale system.
Environment - On top of insufficient knowledge, the computers at the cashier’s
counter are very outdated, which causes it to shut down randomly. Hence, I was unable
to perform at my best due to the outdated resources.
2. Identify examples from your own experience that support, and others that refute,
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory.
Support - When my psychological needs (base salary) and security needs (job stability)
are not fulfilled, I disregard my self-actualization needs such as job achievements.
Refute - I was able to satisfy belongingness needs and make friends with my co-worker,
even when my job as a part-timer is not stable due to low business profit.
