Growing Coconut Trees
1.
2. The chairman of Newport Federal in
Newport Beach, California, Chuck Horning
has investments in commercial real estate,
such as hotels and resorts, across the
country. Also a property owner, Chuck
Horning plants thousands of trees annually
on his ranches in Hawaii and California,
including coconut trees.
When grown and cared for properly,
coconut trees can last for decades, but it
may take up to seven years for coconuts to
first appear among the fronds.
3. However, starting the process is relatively
simple. Growers start with a coconut
husk, a three-gallon pot, and nursery soil
mixed with coarse sand. After placing
the husk halfway into the soil, they put
the pot in a partially shady place and
regularly keep the soil moist but take
care not to overwater it.
4. After setting up the plant, patience is
key. Regardless of where the pot is
placed, it may take nearly a year for a
baby palm to begin to sprout. Once the
sprout becomes visible, the plant can
remain in the three-gallon pot for up to
six months. For continued growth, it will
need to be transferred to a larger vessel
or directly into the ground.
