b. Communications: Reported by MSgt Dance.
1) He briefed the chapter about our AFSA face book webpage and how the page provides
background information on AFSA and informs you of what events are going on in the chapter.
He then stated that he is working on placing files and legislature information on face book but at
this point the files are too big in size.
c. Programs: Reported by MSgt Cole on behalf of TSgt Sylvester.
1) During the AFSA meeting on 6 September 2012, TSgt Sylvester was selected as the new
programs point of contact. She is still receiving the training and transition of the program.
2) MSgt Cole mentioned that we are always in need of volunteers and ideas for good volunteer
opportunities to spread the AFSA name. If you’re interested or have free time, please consider
investing time in AFSA’s programs.
d. Legislative: Reported by MSgt Richards.
2. 1) He urges everyone to support our military benefits by going onto the CAPWIZ website. Look up
your state representative or congress person. The website provides a template of letters for
grievances you may have. The CAPWIZ website will also be located on our face book page.
2) Major legislative information can be found on the AFSA website.
3) News:
a) The Budget Control Act of 2011 raised the debt limit and mandated $1.2 trillion in automatic
"sequestration" cuts over 10 years - half from defense and half from non-defense areas of the
federal budget.
b) Up to half of the cuts generated by the automatic “sequester” would come from defense.
c) Membership in AFSA and AFSA members voicing their concerns is pivotal in showing our
concern and possible loss by these drastic cuts.
4) Please use the AFSA-CAPWIZ (www.ahqafsa.org) website that gives suggested messages to
urge your elected representatives in Washington to alter the way they vote. Many of them don’t
have military experience and don’t understand how this will affect us.
e. Treasurer: Reported by SMSgt Leonards.
1) The current balance for our checking is $752.21 and savings is $5.06.
2) There was one expenditure in September for the SARC supported METC joint service dance
wrist bands, $284.94.
f. AAC: Reported by MSgt Cole on behalf of SSgt Solis.
1) MSgt Cole reported that SSgt Solis is the new AFSA chapter 1077 Airman Activity Council
POC. He also said that we need volunteers with ideas to support and build moral for our Airmen
on Fort Sam Houston. Along with this comment, completing joint projects with the Rising 6 has
become a new goal.
8. Unfinished Business: Reported by MSgt Dance/MSgt Cole/MSgt Ortiz.
a. MSgt Dance reported that he is trying to add files to the face book page but can’t due to the page
blocking that capability. The idea of using certain applications to save files to the face book page
was addressed but MSgt Dance still needs recommendations on what applications will work best.
b. MSgt Cole spoke on behalf of the AFSA business cards, coins and t-shirts. He stated that we have
templates from the old AFSA chapter from Brooks AFB but it needs altered to represent the Fort
Sam Houston chapter. We need motivated volunteers to tackle this obstacle with creativity while
using the lowest amount of funds possible. Please contact MSgt Cole if interested.
c. Lastly, MSgt Ortiz stated that if your members ship is coming due or you are becoming a new
member and you include your AFSA chapter number and a recruiters AFSA number on the
membership form, the chapter will receive money!
9. New Business:
a. MSgt Ortiz talked about 2 possible fundraising options for the AFSA coming this holiday season.
1) Post Exchange Gift Raping, involves volunteers raping presents for Christmas at the PX. If this
is a selected fundraiser we need to get the dates early!
3. 2) “Wreaths Across America,” is a fundraiser where volunteers go to major stores like Lowes,
Walmart, or Home Depot and sell reefs for $15. The reefs are to be placed on military
gravestones and are done so by a third party. You never have to touch a reef and AFSA gets $5
off of every reef sold.
10. President’s Comments: Reported by MSgt Cole .
a. Thank you for taking time to come to the meeting and being a part of AFSA.
b. MSgt Cole briefed that legislative and membership is very important for the chapter and it should be
our main focus. With that being said, the general election for the AFSA chapter 1077 will be
coming up in November or December. Start planning ahead and contact MSgt Cole for information
on positions.
