The story of the first Christmas
tree goes back to a winter night
in 1536.Legend has it that the
great religious reformer,
Martin Luther was passing
through the woods on a winter
night
It seems he suddenly
looked up and was struck
by the panorama of
glittering stars over pine
branches. This
apparently inspired him
to go home and create a
representation at home
with evergreen fir and
candles.
The great historian Balthazar wrote about a
decorated Christmas tree on display in the
market place as early as 1584
In the olden days
Germans are
said to have
decorated
evergreens with
edible stuff and
apples covered
in gold foil
Prince Albert, Queen
Victoria’s consort,
introduced the
Christmas tree in
England in the year
1840
