7. DESCRIPTION: North West Rail Link (NWRL) is Australia’s biggest public transport project at $9.7 billion. The $3.7 billion
OTS package involves the design, construction and commissioning of rail infrastructure (including depot and stabling),
procurement of rolling stock, operation and maintenance, and financing of the 23km of new rail network from Cudgegong
Road to Epping, as well as the upgrade of the 13km of existing rail network from Epping to Chatswood.
CLIENT: TfNSW & NRT (Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium) - John Holland, Leighton Contractors, MTR Corporation, UGL
Rail Services and Plenary Group)
ROLE: The quality, detail and highly organised 3d data behind the graphic outputs has allowed Ai3D to be cost effective in
delivery for TfNSW for comms requirements to date. Our experience in the organisation of large iterative 3d model data and
skill in Ai3D’s staff allows us to produce fast, effective imagery that is technically accurate and representative of the projects
visions. The imagery and animation delivered to date is of noticeable quality, and reflects well on TfNSW and the project.
We observe our deliverables in the media and the most recent images and animations have been published widely, greatly
assisting with communicating the quality project character and vision.
1. NWRL OTS TENDER BID:
The brief for NWRL OTS bid called for a large number (70+) of high quality stills and a detailed customer focused animation. We
understood from experience working on many PPP bids, that timeframes would be tight and that the design would continue
to evolve almost to the deadline. Generating imagery and animation from realtime simulation was the ideal solution. A full
simulation of the entire alignment with timetabled train movements was created, and included a very high level of detail

around the key stations and the Maintenance Facility. These
models could be freely navigated around and high resolution
images could be captured rapidly. Ai3D embedded a project
manager in the bid office for 3 months of the bid, and worked
closely with SME’s from different parts of the bid team.
Ai3D collaborated with the NRT comms team to storyboard
a coherent message that the “customer is at the centre of
everything” and that the journey from door to door should feel
seamless, smooth and relaxed. To capture this human interaction
with ticketing, signage, station staff and architecture, we decided
that a combination of a live action shoot & green screen footage
composited into animations was the most suitable solution.
DELIVERABLES:
- 72 high quality, high resolution stills with multiple drafts.
- Journey animation
- Train Featre animation
- Rail Maintenance Facility animations
- Station Animations
- Interactive iPad tender package app.
2. TFNSW | NWRL COMMS:
Ai3D’s quality was noticed by TfNSW during the successful tender
bid. As a result, Ai3D were approached to produce high quality
outputs quickly and economically while accommodating TfNSW’s
key message requirements for Australia’s largest public transport
project. The services went to national tender where Ai3D was
succssful in winning the 4 year contract on offer due to our
superior services, quality and value for money.
DELIVERABLES:
- High quality animations highlighting train features and stations
- 360 Degree high quality interactive spherical renderings
- Platform screen door function animation
- Ultra high resolution images for building drapes.
ENGAGEMENT PERIOD:
Aug 2013 - 2017

DESCRIPTION: $1.6 billion, light rail connecting Circular Quay, the CBD and the south east including Moore Park and the
University of NSW, and the pedestrianisation of George Street between Bathurst and Hunter St.
Client:SydneyConnect ( Serco Pty Ltd, John Holland Pty Ltd and Plenary Group Pty Ltd)
ROLE:
Ai3D were engaged to create accurate 3d images and animations for clear communication through graphics of complicated technical
information. Working to a fixed budget Ai3D was able to produce premium quality animation and imagery that excelled the complicated
brief that resulted from different communications agendas from each consortium member. Engineering, architecture, urban design &
landscape architecture among many other disciplines technical information were required to be consoidated into detailed 3D models
that clearly showed the propsed design integrated with existing elements.
Feedback from the bid team for the quality of the delivered animation and images was glowing, with the rolling stock manufacturer
stating that it was “best our trams have ever looked” in 3D visuals.
One of the biggest challenges was to show simulation of crowd management on game day (more than 15,000 people). Using an
innovative animation system, we delivered complex animation with crowds filling corralling zones, crossing a controlled gate crossing,
and a succession of trams pulling up, loading and unloading.
DELIVERABLES:
- produced high quality journey, key feature videos
- produced crowd simulation (10K+) and train loading animation
- produced construction staging animation
- produced high quality still images
- scripted voiceovers
ENGAGEMENT PERIOD: -6 weeks

DESCRIPTION:
Construction of $4.8 billion 7.5 kilometres of new regional track, new
rail bridges, two road/rail separations, a new station and 2 major station
upgrades, level crossing improvements, and design and construction of
train control systems.
CLIENT:
Thiess, Balfour Beatty, Parsons Brinckerhoff and SKM
ROLE:
A 3d realtime interactive (VR) model was the chosen solution to
communicate the bid teams design. A realtime model was created
for the 3 key stations, their surroundings and the alignment. From
the realtime model animations were quick to turnaround and keep
pace with updates to the design as it developed. Part of the tender
requirements for the project was a series of interim design review and
stake holder meetings. Ai3D were able to fly over to key areas under
discussion, with the 3d interactive model projected to the auditoriums
big screen in HD, as the architects and engineers presented their latest
design and design impetus. This enabled the discussion to be highly
focussed, and gave non technical stakeholders immediate insight into
issues that otherwise would not have been understood using plans and
elevations.
The realtime model was configured with a number of design options
that could be toggled between, including pedestrian underpass,
access ramps and associated impact on ticketing, as well as layers for
vegetation, vehicles, people etc. Using the realtime tool the state were
quickly able to see that the pedestrian underpass at Sunshine station
was not a desirable solution, as the safety issues became immediately
clear.
