My view of education is as stated in our readings; “education is a social institution through which society’s children are taught basic academic knowledge, learning skills, and cultural norms. (OpenStax, 362) Education is important that is needed to keep society functioning. Structural functionalism is a framework for building theory that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. Reference: OpenStax20120: Introduction to Sociology 8. My view on education is that those who can pay for it will benefit from it. The wealthy control the schools and colleges. This perpetuates a wealthy life. For a wealthy family to send a child to the best schools will set the child up for the best programs, clubs, and become alumni of prestigious colleges, fraternities, and sororities. My step-son was recently enrolled into a private academy by his father. His father, although I would not consider him wealthy, does have a substantial income and pays $9,000 a year for his son to attend this school. The school is designed to set up children up for college. He has hours of homework every night, and some of the work is considered to be two to three grade levels above public school. My views are supported by Conflict Theory. I agree with this theory that education is linked to social class. There are kids in our neighborhood who are not attending school due to COVID, but my step-son never stopped attending. He is being afforded more opportunities than those in a lower socioeconomic status ( OpenStax College (2012:369). .
