The Proud Monkey
Once they lived a monkey by a river. The monkey was naughty and arrogant.
In the river lived a tortoise who was kind and clever. The tortoise was always
teased by the monkey.
“Wouldn’t it be great to be able to swing from tree to tree?” taunted monkey.
“You cannot be like me . “
The tortoise was patient. It ignored the monkey’s tauntings. It liked to remain
friends with the monkey.
Soon the guava trees near the river began to bear fruits . The monkey feasted
the fruits greedily. The tortoise just looked and wished for a fruit.
“ Can you please throw me a fruit?” asked the tortoise. “I am sure it is
tasty,”said the tortoise. “Here, take one!” shouted the monkey.
The monkey throw a rotten fruit to the tortoise. The fruit hit the tortoise on
the head. The tortoise then hid inside its shell.
The monkey laughed loudly. It was happy to see the tortoise hurt. The tortoise
could not stand the monkey’s behaviour any longer.
The tortoise decided to teach the monkey a lesson. It lied that there was an
island full of trees bearing delicious fruits.”The fruits are sweet too!” lied the
tortoise.
“Please take me there,” pleaded the greedy monkey. “I will pluck the fruits for
you , too.”The monkey then jumped on the top of the tortoise.
The tortoise swam slowly to the island. As soon as they reached the island, the
monkey jumped up a tree and plucked the rambutans.
“I have tricked you again!” said the monkey. Then it threw a rambutan skin at
the tortoise.”I will not share a single fruit with you,”laughed the monkey.
As soon as the monkey took a bite of the rambutan,it screamed. The
rambutans were bitter and sour.
