Emerging technology of the 19th century—photography, railroads, the telegraph, and the telephone—transformed and accelerated the world. Eadweard Muybridge was among those who dramatically influenced the concurrent changes in people’s perceptions and experiences. His photographs of horses in motion, the first to prove that all four feet are in the air during part of the stride, sparked a new medium and industry. Those seminal images, along with his many other timeless photos of the American West, lay the groundwork for motion pictures. Rebecca Solnit, author of River of Shadows: Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West, offers insight into the complex and colorful Muybridge, now considered the godfather of cinema. This annual lecture recognizes a generous multiyear grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art. The Terra Foundation is dedicated to fostering the exploration, understanding, and enjoyment of the visual arts in the United States for national and international audiences

The large-scale public works decorating the Woman’s Building, a large exposition hall, were among the most unusual artistic features at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. Customarily, large-scale murals and sculptures were the domain of men, so it was newsworthy when the female managers of the Woman’s Building commissioned women artists: Mary Cassatt and Mary MacMonnies to create monumental paintings for the building’s grand hall, Alice Rideout to craft large-scaled sculptures for the exterior of the building, and other women to make wall murals and stained glass windows. Wanda Corn, a historian and professor emeritus at Stanford University, discusses how these artists used their unique opportunity to imagine a visual history of women, revising the male view of history seen elsewhere at the fair. This program is generously underwritten by the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Pirate radio—illegal or unregulated radio transmission—holds a special place in broadcasting history. In its British heyday in the 1960s, entrepreneurs and music enthusiasts began broadcasting pop and rock music from offshore ships and unused sea forts. Stations proliferated, meeting the daily demand of 10 to 15 million British listeners and ultimately cracking the BBC’s virtual monopoly on radio. Adrian Johns, a historian at the University of Chicago, recounts this exciting period of action on the high seas, revealing how pirates changed not only British radio history but also all of broadcasting.

As university libraries everywhere digitize their collections and move their books to off-site storage, the University of Chicago is bucking the trend with the construction of the new Joe and Rika Mansueto Library, which will house over 3.5 million volumes. University of Chicago library director Judith Nadler reveals the vision, design, and logistics behind the Helmut Jahn–designed, state-of-the-art facility. She is joined by Randal C. Picker, law professor at University of Chicago, who considers the relationship between the physical book and its electronic version from a legal perspective. Together they discuss the library’s embrace of a digital future in which the commitment to the conservation of printed materials remains strong. Tours of Mansueto’s underground, mechanized book retrieval system are ticketed separately.

Riva Lehrer is a portrait artist whose work focuses on representations of the disabled body and the experience of disability. She was also a visiting artist at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Gross Anatomy Lab for four years. In this program, Lehrer will be joined by Norman Lieska, associate professor of anatomy at UIC, to consider variation in the body and its relation to beauty. Blurring the boundaries between the scientific and the expressive, and using a combination of art imagery and anatomical references, Lehrer and Lieska consider how variation may lead to creativity: the more variant a person’s body is, the more a person has to rethink the environment and options for getting from here to there. They will take a look at variation inside the body, consider abnormalities not visible on the body’s surface, and note the slippery play between so-called normal and variation.

Emeritus Artistic Director of The Chicago Humanities Festival, Lawrence Weschler, discusses one of Rembrandt's most famed paintings, "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp", and provides a brief history of anatomical art. Rembrandt's contribution, by way of this painting, embodies several different interpretations that go beyond the scope of what is seen at first glance. Additionally, Rembrant's composition, decisions, and mastery add a unique context to the piece. In Weschler's comprehensive analysis of this work, connections between various ideas start to emerge. We discover the significance behind the laws of the era, the role our hands play in defining us, the marvel of life in light of another's death, and find influences from the painting in more modern images, like that of Che Guevara after his death in 1967. These thoughts and the dawn of the secular revolution are also examined, alongside the portrayal of Christ that Rembrandt's piece often evokes.

This partnership between the University of Chicago Medical Center and community doctors, clinics, and hospitals seeks to address and improve the long-term health of South Side residents. The main research and discovery arm of UHI is the South Side Health and Vitality Studies, which focus on social, environmental, and technological factors and their impact on health and wellness. Dr. Whitaker leads a group of panelists deeply invested in the studies’ work in a discussion about the ramifications of its findings and the impact on delivering quality health care to an under-served population.
