Sample myth
story: Why
people lost
their wings
By: Ms. Best
A long time ago, human beings ruled
the skies. Men and women could fly to
the highest mountain top and across
the widest ocean.
Each child was born with two tiny
buds on their back that would grow
into beautiful white wings.
The world was full of happiness and
wonder.
One day an unusual baby was born.
This baby was born with a fully
grown pair of black wings. The baby
was odd and a little scary. It never
cried, didn’t eat, or sleep. All it
wanted to do was fly. It didn’t need
companionship or protection. It
wasn’t interested in being with the
people.
The elders of the world were
perplexed. How can such a small
child fly? Should we remove its
wings? Will they grow back? No one
knew the answers to these difficult
questions. But they had to be
answered.
They decided to send their best
flyers on a quest. Could they find
another baby with black wings?
Could they find the answers they
needed?
They flew as far as they could - to
the sky people at the other end of
the earth. When they arrived, they
saw a horrible sight. The trees were
dead; the people were gone. There
was nothing left except white
feathers floating in the air.
What did this mean? What
happened here? Where are all the
people? Where are the flyers?
There was a war. A black winged
flyer had single handedly killed all
the good people. It wanted the trees
and the mountains and the sky for
itself. It was evil and dangerous. It
had to be stopped. There was only
one way.
They had to remove the wings from
the baby. To prevent anymore black
winged babies, they had to give up
their white wings. From then on
people where unable to fly.
At first, there was much sadness
and despair. But as time and
generations went by, people forgot
about flying. They built their homes
on the ground and their babies were
born without white or black wings.
There were no more wars or death
or destruction.
