The Role Of Climate Change In Canada
Climate change has become the most serious global environmental threat with sides of people who
do not believe it exists and people who are actually aware. The release of greenhouse gases such as
carbon and methane into the atmosphere has been known to be one of the major causes of climate
change. Scientists explain that these emissions must drastically reduce to avoid a 2°C rise in average
global temperature. Therefore different countries have made policies and ways to reduce the
production of these gases and Canada is one of them. Canada ranks 15th out of 17 countries for
greenhouse gas emissions per capita.Canada's per capita decreased by nearly 5% between 1990 and
2010 while the total GHG emissions in Canada grew by 17%. The ... Show more content on

Electricity generation is Canada's fourth–largest source of greenhouse gas. When it comes to
controlling the emission that comes from electricity generation; most provinces in Canada are
already opting out of the coal phase to provide cleaner energy. The burning of firewood to create
energy releases CO2 into the atmosphere thereby introducing more greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere.therefore introducing approaches to electricity such as increasing the amount of
electricity generated from renewable sources; connecting clean power with places that need it and
modernising electrical system could bring Canada to its goal by at least 5% to 15%. New rules that
help to control emissions from an electrical sector that is burning natural gases should also be
implemented. the government Could also control greenhouse gas emission by mandating the carbon
pricing policy. Carbon pricing charges industries and corporations that emit CO2 for their emissions.
This limits their emissions by instituting a price charge and encourage companies and consumers
from burning fossil fuel and find alternative ways that are efficient for their business. Carbon pricing
has been known to be the best tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions since most of the gases
released into the atmosphere are carbon. Carbon pricing helps to fight climate change and it
provides job opportunity in creating clean energy. the growing population is also a discussable topic
in climate change that could be really hard to control due to the fact that as the population increases;
the demand for products that release this toxic gases would also increase. The government could
control this by finding alternative ways to produce these commodities without introducing so much
carbon or methane into the

Global Warming Will Damage The Wildlife And Environment
Since the industrial revolution, greenhouse gas emissions, namely carbon dioxide, have been on the
rise. Greenhouse gases are generally created when fossil fuels are burned. Many daily activities
require burning fossil fuels–warming houses, driving cars, and using electricity. As written in
Horizons, Canada emits some of the most greenhouse gases globally, and will be especially
susceptible given its latitude (Cranny et al. 17). Global warming will damage the wildlife and
environment. "Humans depend on the environment and adapt to it, but they also change it
dramatically to suit their needs and wants," (Cranny et al. 13). Although fossil fuels are burning at
an increased rate, there are ways to reduce emissions–a carbon tax or a ... Show more content on

A tax simply puts a price on the amount they pollute. An article in the Huffington Post written April
12, 2014, updated March 5, 2015, by Kenneth P. Green, discusses the implications of a carbon tax.
The article is valuable since it looks at many aspects in which a carbon tax can be positive and
negative; however, it does not include public opinions and what citizens think of carbon taxes. It is
reliable since it offers a wide range of perspectives and originates from a source that is very
proficient in the field of environmental studies. Green is a writer who has studied about climate for
many years, meaning his opinions are well built due to his expertise. One interesting thing to take
away from the article is the discussion of the reason for a carbon tax. According to the article,
Canada only emitted 1.8% of the world's greenhouse gases in 2012 (in contrast to the Horizons
textbook) – is there then any point in reducing emissions? Even if Canada reduced emissions
largely, it seems the effect worldwide would not be drastic. The article then makes the point that, "If
it isn 't about environmental protection, essentially it is about changing people 's behaviours in ways
that drive them away from activities that produce greenhouse gas emissions." A national carbon tax
will affect Canadians in different ways–transportation, energy, clothing, and food prices would rise
with the addition of a carbon tax. Often carbon taxes are

Animal Testing in the Cosmetic Industry: An Increasingly...
Animal testing has become an increasingly controversial issue since the 1980s. This has been the
case especially in the cosmetics industry, where esthetic value rather than necessity is at the core of
the industry. Since information regarding the often unnecessarily cruel practice of animal testing has
become public knowledge, many activist groups have targeted the industry to pressure
manufacturers into stopping practices that have been deemed unacceptable. While some of these
efforts have met with some success, many cosmetic companies still do use animal testing in a
somewhat covert way, despite public claims that this is not the case. Another concern for activists is
the harmful chemicals in cosmetics. These are marketed to a largely uninformed public. Some of
these substances are even claimed to cause various types of cancer, such as breast cancer in women.
Activist groups therefore worked to raise public awareness of a largely unregulated industry in
which especially giant companies have concealed their unethical practices in order to promote sales.
Cornelia Dum's website (2013) lists several activists that have put pressure on the industry to change
its practices. The David Suzuki Foundation, for example, published an 2010 report providing an
overview of toxic chemical products in commonly used cosmetics. Many of these are also proven to
be harmful to the environment. The purpose of the report is to stimulate better regulation and more
accurate labeling of cosmetics.

Walter Moss An Age Of Progress Analysis
Today, most people take electricity for granted, especially in the United States and other developed
countries of the world. According to Walter Moss in his book, An Age of Progress?, Clashing
Twentieth–Century Global Forces, during the twentieth century, perhaps no other technological
advancement, even the automobile, affected the people of the world more than electricity. Electricity
would become the foundation for the development of new technological advancements in industries
such as agriculture, health and science, environment, and technology. Production and consumption
in all these industries would continue to rise throughout the century with reliance on electricity to
flourish.
The widespread use of electricity started towards the end of the nineteenth century. At first
electricity, both in the United States and abroad, was used primarily for lighting streets, operating
public transit, and by stores, restaurants, and other commercial and industrial enterprises. The use of
oil and candles were still the typical way many people lit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The development of high yield crops have saved huge areas of forests and other environmentally
fragile lands that would otherwise have been needed for farming. For example, in Asia cereal
production doubled between 1970 and 1975, yet the total land area cultivated with cereals increased
by only 4 percent. The passing of laws like the Clean Water Act of 1972 that took steps to insure the
increased use of fertilizers and pesticides would not end up in the waterways that so many people
rely on for consumption and in the agriculture world of farming. The development of pest–resistant
varieties has also helped in keeping pesticides and herbicides out of our waters. All of these

Climate Change In Canada Essay
Introduction
In the words of Barack Obama, "climate change is no longer some far–off problem; it is happening
here, it is happening now." (J. S. World Economic Forum, 2015) This global phenomenon is causing
many problems around the world and is affecting both developed countries like Canada and other
countries in the process of developing. This report investigates how climate change can pose
significant impacts on all countries despite economic stability. Places like Canada are affected by the
severe storms and drastic changes in weather and these changes can hurt the environment and the
economy. They can also pose threats to crop production and public health. Climate change can also
hurt the developmental progression of low–income countries ... Show more content on

The potential harm that climate change could have in Canada is concerning because Canada has one
of the most diverse landscapes which is host to a countless number of species and ecosystems that
are examples of "at–risk habitats" (David Suzuki Foundation, 2017). Natural resources Canada
believes that climate change will affect many of the forests in Canada in a range of complex ways.
These affects include changes in plant mortality, disturbance in plant growth and distribution. These
impacts are cumulative and can increase insect vulnerability or cause more wildfires. These
problems can weaken the plant population and increase their chances of being disease–prone or
attacked by insects. Some habitats may disappear, because of changing weather patterns. Many
forestry–dependant communities and aboriginal communities will be affected and loss in their wood
supply like timber would hinder their economic strength and harvesting potential (Natural resources
Canada, 2017). In the Atlantic, the affects of climate change would result in an increase of weather
inconsistency. The region may face more storm events, storm intensity, rising sea levels and coastal
erosion. Since much of the Canadian population lives in costal regions this can have grave
implications. It can affect the socio economic–well being of Atlantic communities in vital
infrastructure, and industries like fishery and tourism (Climate Action Network,

Global Warming And Its Effects On Our Communities, Our...
In this day and age, problems like global warming, widespread fossil fuel use, and high carbon
emissions are "having significant and harmful effects on our communities, our health, and our
climate" (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014). "To limit [this], the world is going to have to get a
lot better at using energy smartly" (Hope, 2014). One such way is by reducing the amount of energy
we consume or waste on a daily basis; in other words, being more energy efficient. Energy
Efficiency is "using less energy to provide the same service." Something is more energy efficient if
it delivers maximum production for less energy input. For example, energy efficient microwaves
provide the same service as conventional ones however they require "30 ... Show more content on

More than half of these greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide which is released during the burning of
fossil fuels. However, by using less energy and committing to energy efficiency (i.e. driving electric
or hybrid type vehicles, creating a lower demand for energy, buying energy efficient appliances), we
can reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to be burned and in turn, stop global warming or
climate change. In addition to that, being energy efficient in homes and buying energy efficient
appliances can significantly benefit one's pocket. Simple things like "replacing old incandescent
light bulbs with CFL or LED lights can save one up to 30–80% on energy bills", and buying
"Energy Star appliances can save one up to 30% on electricity bills" annually (Alliance to Save
Energy, 2012). Also, simple daily tasks done in a different way (more efficiently), such as washing
clothes in cold water or keeping one's tires inflated, could bring up to $60 of savings annually
(Alliance to save Energy, 2012). These small things done to promote efficiency at home and at work
help cities and countries save on a bigger level. For example, America, the number one GHG
emitter, saved more than $500 billion in energy costs by using 56% less energy; that's enough to
power 12 states for a year (Alliance to save Energy, 2012). That money that would have been spent
on energy could now be spent on improving energy efficiency by building energy efficient
buildings, educating about consuming

ingredients linked with ecotoxicity and cancer – Sodium Laureth Sulfate (can be contaminated with

the product does it mention a single word of caution about the ingredients present in the shampoo,
but it does proudly display an award it won from 2011. Although the price of $3.99 is unbeatable for
consumers looking for some cheap shampoo, consumers need to realize the impact these ingredients

impact in the future, and those $3.99 bottles of shampoo could turn into $10,000 a month for cancer

warning labels should be placed on the packaging of these products. Having any kind of information

Reducing Carbon Emissions By Implementing A Cap And Trade...
Introduction
This article states that Ontario is preparing to aim at reducing carbon emissions by implementing a
cap–and–trade system which claims to "put a price on everything from industrial emissions to
gasoline and natural gas". By explaining how the cap–and–trade system works to cut back the
carbon emissions in industries operating, this article claims that this system will limit carbon
emissions by making companies to purchase permits which are called allocations from the
government to emit carbon. Cap on gasoline and natural gas means consumers will have to pay for
the costs, which forces consumers to behave environmental friendly as well. By implementing cap–
and–trade systems, sectors including heavy industry, transportation fuels, and electricity generation
would fall under the cap, while some other systems for example Quebec's sectors are not under cap.
In opposing to this exception, the experts hold the opinion that cap–and–trade systems should be
spread "as large a constituency as possible" (Morrow 2015).
Meanwhile, there will be big polluters such as long suffered manufactory may suffer from possible
breaks. Although there will be big polluters that can become candidates of breakers, the government
will seek to protect them from the full cost from this policy by giving industries up to 100 percent of
their allocations for free for the first four years of this program. However, the researchers are
debating on the number of free allocations as they think 100

John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution states that "if genetically engineered plants were
designed to reverse world hunger, you would expect them to bring higher yields. But there is
increasing evidence that they do just the opposite". Numerous studies have shown that GM crops do
not have a higher yield production, but in fact have at times shown a lower outcome. In 2000,
"research done by the University of Nebraska found the yields of GE soybeans were six to eleven
percent lower than conventional plants" (Robbins). Evidence that GM foods are not the answer to
world hunger continues to pile up. Former US EPA and US FDA biotech specialist Dr. Doug
Gurian–Sherman acknowledges that GM crops are not beneficial to solving world hunger: "as of
this year [2008], there are no commercialized GM crops that inherently increase yield. Similarly,
there are no GM crops on the market that were engineered to resist drought, reduce fertilizer
pollution or save soil. Not one" ("10 Reasons Why we don't Need GM Foods"). Genetically

clearly see the physical differences between organic and GM corn. In response to Monsanto's
statement, eighteen African delegates clearly objected, noting that it would undermine their capacity

Controversial Hunting
What goes through the minds of people when they think about trophy hunting? Hunting is the act of
pursuing and killing live animals for food, recreation, or trade. Early human civilizations relied on
hunting for subsistence. As humans and civilizations evolved, so did hunting. Hunting became a
sport rather than a necessity. People who are for hunting claim that it helps control wildlife
populations, whereas people against it believe that trophy hunting will lead to the extinction of
certain animals. This paper will examine viewpoint one, two, and my viewpoint on trophy hunting
being banned or not.
To begin with, viewpoint one believes trophy hunting serves no purpose and is contributing to the
eradication of species. For starters, grizzly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Specifically, trophy hunting could harm the environment and the entire species of the animal killed.
Firstly, grizzly bears help the environment and other animals in the rainforest. For example, David
Suzuki talks about how grizzlies bring salmon, along with nutrients from the ocean in the salmon,
into the rainforest. This leaves the carcass of the salmon for other animals and the nutrients in the
salmon for the fertilization of the rainforest (Suzuki). Therefore, trophy hunting grizzlies harms
more than just the one bear the hunter killed. Secondly, illegal markets caused a rise in hunting,
leading to more animals being killed to be sold. For instance, Richard Emslie and Michael Knight
report that "pseudo–hunters" would get permits to hunt rhinos and sell their horns. "This caused a
temporary peak in hunting applications" (Emslie). Therefore, the hunting of animals caused illegal
markets to pop up, in which caused more people to hunt. Thirdly, some animals are already facing
threats without hunters. To illustrate, Suzuki, talking about grizzly bears, says "they already face
threats from habitat loss, damage and fragmentation; cascading effects of salmon collapse and
climate change; and death from poaching." Hence, hunting only furthers problems animals have. For
all these reasons, trophy hunting is harming the environment and other animals, plus the ones they

As the book "Guía básica de la sostenibilidad" states: "The construction industry is responsible of
50% of the global warming with the energy used in heating, illuminating and ventilating buildings."
(Edwards, 2004) Therefore sustainability, which is understood as: "a condition of existence which

companies. It is at the forefront of leading industry change to greener, environmentally friendlier
practices. One of Tembec's most recent sustainability exploits was, in May 2010, being one of the
major forestry companies to sign the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement, a historic accord between
industry, government and some of biggest environmental groups like Greenpeace, the David Suzuki
foundation, The Nature Conservancy and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness society.
Tembec do three major things to help the environment: they do not construct their industries in
green areas, which means that they only put their industries in areas where there is already energy
sources and technological sources; they plant trees every year; and, last but not least, they use the
things in the forest that are left over. For example, some of the wood shavings are sold to a company
that bags them for bedding for pets and livestock.

Don't litter, it makes the world bitter!
Have you ever noticed as you're walking the amount of cigarette butts that litter the ground? On the
sidewalk, in the dirt, in the bushes, in a parking lot, on the beach, near a river, or even surrounding a
trash can. Probably not, if you weren't really paying attention or because you honestly didn't care,
but you should. Although cigarette butts may seem harmless, they're just as dangerous as an actual
cigarette. They have the same toxins as a cigarette integrated into their filter, which can harm and
kill unsuspecting animals. The littering of cigarette butts must stop, we must begin to take measures
to prevent these small cylinder looking pieces of paper from destroying our environment.
To start with, cigarette butts contain a form of plastic called cellulose acetate; this plastic is non–

The Impacts Of Climate Change
Climate Change
What is climate change exactly? Climate change happens when long–term weather problems occur.
For example: global warming can be a part of climate change because the weather changes and the
heat increase very slowly. Climate change is becoming a huge problem and is affecting the world's
ecosystems and communities. The world could become one huge oven or it won't. Nobody knows.
The Impacts of Climate Change
Some of the impacts of climate change are that severe thunderstorms and extreme weather events
like a drought, etc. Can happen. Which can ruin certain parts in our community. One of the biggest
worries that climate change has developed is how our water recourses can be affected and how there
may be some difficulties to gain access to water/clean water (David Suzuki foundation, 2017). The
forests in Canada are expected to be the most vulnerable to climate change these days. So, we really
have to watch out for our trees and nature. It's also become a huge threat to the health of our loved
ones and the children because of the spreading diseases caused by climate change.

How Does Dairy Production Affect The Environment? Why Is...
When you buy food to eat, do you think of the effects it has on the environment? It is easy to
overlook the environmental impacts of our food because it is spread across different varieties of
species. From plants to animals, from production to transportation, from hunting to growing food,
all of these have big impacts on the world today. How does dairy production effect the environment?
Why is milk processed? Milk is a nutritious food that has a short shelf–life and needs to be handled
carefully. Milk is highly perishable because it is an excellent place for the growth of
microorganisms, mostly bacterial pathogens. These pathogens can cause spoilage and diseases. Milk
processing conserves milk for days, weeks or months and it also helps to reduce food–borne illness
(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2016). The majority of milk is thermally
processed at least once during its manufacture. Energy input and the increased resources needed to
clean the spoiled heat exchangers are major parts of this process and the remaining plant processing
equipment. Cleaning also has an impact on energy use and waste generation. Using more chemicals
in the cleaning process increases the global waste production, but makes it less costly and takes less
time to clean it. The manufacture of polyethylene or aluminum for packaging is the cause of the
highest solid waste in the raw material production stage. Water use is seen as both the consumption
and quality of waste and

ecological footprint. A country's ecological footprint consists of that country's impact on their
environment via their use of resources2. Canada has a small population which results in a much
lower ecological footprint than countries with bigger populations¬6. Canada's total ecological
footprint is 224 global hectares (gha)6. This is comparable to the United States with a total
ecological footprint of 2.3 billion gha, China with 2.9 billion gha and India with 1.1 billion gha6.
This does not mean that Canada is better at preserving natural capital than these other countries6.
Canada's per capita ecological footprint is 6.4gha6. The University of ... Show more content on

One of the largest contributors to a high ecological footprint is related to personal transportation and
the construction, maintenance and operations of buildings3. When more people are living in an area,
the amount of energy and transportation needed decreases and so does the area's ecological
footprint3. This occurs because as walking increases, the amount of personal driving decreases.
Another way Vancouver is working to reduce its ecological footprint is by protecting land in the
"Green Zone"7. About 60% of the region's land is protected7. This includes agricultural land,
watersheds, and natural and recreational areas7. These "Green Zones" will limit access and help
preserve the region's natural capital.
The David Suzuki Foundation proposed a South Coast Conservation Program in order to "conserve
and restore at risk species and ecosystems on the British Columbia South Coast"9. The projects
main focus is to preserve ecosystems and maintain biodiversity9. These are essential components in
improving natural capital. The Emily Carr University of Art in Design (ECUAD) in Vancouver
joined forces with The David Suzuki Foundation (DSF)10. Their goal was an to provide a natural
capital application as an educational tool to provide data on natural capital have it more readily

Planet Shrimp Analysis
Education
Overview
Planet Shrimp wants to use 'clean' shrimp as their main point of differentiation, highlighting their
closed–loop aquaculture process that does not involve toxins and ensures environmental
sustainability throughout. As consumers are continually concerned about knowing where their food
comes from, the safety of their food and price point, Planet Shrimp should understand how to
educate the public about the 'clean' shrimp movement (The Canadian Press, 2014a). To achieve this,
Planet Shrimp must answer the question:
How should Planet Shrimp educate consumers about the benefits of clean shrimp without
shortcomings of current products being associated with their brand?

The Effects Of Global Warming On The Ocean Temperature
Indicators:
Ocean temperature
Since 1970 the ocean temperature has been increasing at an unprecedented rate, this is indicating
accelerated climate change as the water is heating along with the globe.
Sea level
The glaciers in Greenland and the arctic are melting due to the rising temperature causing the water
level to rise.
Ice surface area
The ice surface across the globe is receding at an alarming rate year after year, as the water and
globe warm the ice is not able to stay frozen.
Increased droughts
Over the period from 2000 through 2013, roughly 20 to 70 percent of the U.S. land area experienced
conditions that were at least abnormally dry at any given time.
Extreme climate events
On average, total annual precipitation has increased over land areas in the United States and
worldwide.
Positives:
Global warming is causing a decrease in total ice surface area, meaning that ships can pass through
areas previously not possible to travel through. Such as the NorthWest Passage through Canada's
frozen north which will become available for sea transportation. Its existence could mean larger
ships, particularly oil tankers too big for the Panama Canal, which have to go around the southern
tip of South America, would have a shorter trip between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at their
disposal, thus increasing efficiency and lowering costs of water transport throughout the world.
As more countries and people become aware of global warming they turn to alternative energy

Understanding Social Change On The Health Care World
Unit 2: Understanding Social Change
Lesson 6
6. Write a hypothesis on three topics from views of an (i) anthropologist, (ii) sociologist, and (iii)
psychologist.
a) Health:
(i) Cultures that actively reject technological advances in the health care world could subject
themselves or family members to mortality for beliefs, such as ones outlined in religion.
(ii) If technology could extend lives by a large margin, the amount of people in old age may exceed
the means it takes to accommodate them in less–functioning bodies.
(iii) Women that are depressed due to infertility can enjoy a better quality of life given the choice of
using reproductive technologies in their marriage, family, and home life.

I love my dad's stories and his advice, so when he told me he has a friend whose daughter was
making $65 000 a year, fresh out of college, I was not opposed to his idea of going to college to
become a dental hygienist, I thought why not. I did not expect my university level class friend's I

when I was applying for my classes, questioning my motives, saying I would not know anyone
because I did come from a high school in Toronto. I laughed it off and continued to do what my dad
wanted, knowing I would make good grades and be satisfied. A few months forward, I continue
seeing my friends at lunch but I kept getting snide remarks. I could not mention my work or
accomplishments because it was too easy but the remarks became meaner. Eventually I could not

a different academic pathway. While they were mostly joking, I felt alienated and unlike myself. I
was alone in my classes at the beginning and they become a little cruel. I vowed to take university

would support me academically no matter what, but taking my "usual" classes sat with me

Synthesis Essay: The Dangers Of Makeup
Makeup has always been a major part in a woman's daily life. It is a part of most women's morning
routines before they go to work, school, or any other daily activities. Some women cannot leave
their houses without putting on makeup, and some women prefer not to wear makeup, it just
depends on a woman's preference. However, makeup has some dangers within the ingredients that it
contains. In the past few years, companies like Ilia Beauty, Elate
Cosmetics, and Vapour, have come forward as natural beauty companies. Those companies do not
contain harmful ingredients that some other companies might put in their products. It is important

In fact, it is also necessary for governmental bodies to become involved in promoting localized food
such as policies and labelling laws that encourage healthier eating and food re–localization. In
addition, regulations to foster sustainable food production are essential. Moreover, in the movie
Cuban, the Accidental Revolution, David Suzuki, introduces how the government's vision becomes
one with the farmers, that there is a possibility for the industrial food system to work together. For
example, Cuban agronomists describe the benefits of crop rotation for soil health, while Cuban
farmers express pleasure with the relative productivity and profitability of their ecological and
somehow newly industrialized farming systems. By inventing a new way to create food and working
with nature, profit is gained and diversity is generated leading the country to possess the largest
national program in sustainable agriculture. With the government's assistance, farmers learn to do
more with less and growing food as a community becomes more a passion that profits. In his article,
Wes Jackson also supports the idea of finding a new way to create food without technology and
science. Instead of focusing mainly on the local food systems, he emphasizes that by using all the
knowledge acquired from the pioneers and their cleverness, we can build domestic prairies that have
high–yielding fields that are planted only once every twenty years. It is not the entire answer to the
total agriculture problems, but breeding new crops from native plants selected from nature's
abundance and simulating the resettlement botanical complexity of a region should make it easier to
solve many agricultural problems (40). The share to work side by side with nature may be one of the
solution to establish a new sea of perennial prairie

Eco Fiscal Policies And Carbon Pricing Policies
In the second evening lecture, Elizabeth Beale spoke about eco–fiscal policies with a focus on
carbon pricing. According to Beale, increasing carbon emissions are not only harmful to the
environment but also create several negative externalities such as damaging crops and higher health
costs. For this reason, carbon pricing would help to shift these costs back to those who are
responsible. Beale proposes two options for carbon pricing,, a carbon tax or a cap–and–trade system.
A carbon tax is simpler as the government sets a price for greenhouse gas emissions. A cap–and–
trade system is more complex as allowable emissions are capped, and then the government
distributes emissions permits, which are tradable. Beale claimed that no one system is more superior
than the other, especially as the differences between the two get blurred as more jurisdictions are
adopting more blended systems. Beale concluded her lecture by looking at the current carbon
pricing policies implemented throughout Canada. In British Columbia, a carbon tax of $30/tonne
was implemented in 2008, which caused fuel use to drop by 16% from 2008 to 2013. In Quebec a
cap–and–trade system was implemented in 2012 that covered 85% of emissions with the goal to
reduce emissions to 25% below 1990 levels by 2020. However, despite the action on carbon pricing
in these provinces, the Atlantic Canadian provinces have yet to implement any type of policy. As a
neoliberalist, I would have to strongly disagree with Beale's

Salmon : Cause, Causes And Effects Of Overfishing?
Salmon has been a highly demanded product by millions of customers as well as the countries who
rely on seafood as a primary dish. However, with the influx of people's wants come the
consequences of these species are decreasing in populations around the world due to the causes and
practices of human fishing. As stated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), there were an estimated
50% decline worldwide of salmon over the last twenty years. Several sources play a factor in the
huge amounts of salmon being depleted including overfishing, loss of habitat, and even dams. Since
the late 1900s, other ways of reversing what was happening to populations were being proposed and
one new technical approach to re–populate the salmon fish exponentially was known as salmon
farming, but the process brought more problems to the salmon species then there were good. Before
the practice of fish farming even came to play, other factors were already contributing to the
decrease in salmon species. Overfishing is one major reason to why there is low levels of salmon
because of the immense demands of customers and in order to reach the supply for them, individuals
and large companies of boats are taking in these fish in vast numbers with certain ways of
innovative fishing. These include using longline, where there is an extended line that are made up of
hooks, and nets that are spread across an area where fish may be. Not only do these styles of fishing
catch hundreds of salmon but they often catch bycatch as well that affect all other populations of
fish and even foods of what the salmon eats like shrimp. Two other ways that are affecting salmon
involve the loss of its habitat and the uses of water–powered dams which are part of the methods of
affecting the environment. The loss of habitat comprises of pollution in and around the area of
freshwater, including chemical waste from industrial sites and the change in the flow of rivers due to
hydroelectric dams that favor the human population needs. As a result of these obstacles and
barriers, flowing waters have a lack of nutrients and can reduce the diversity of the freshwater
environment which could lead to low resources of food for the salmon. With all these environmental
issues that

Informative Essay: Climate Change In Canada
Climate Change
Issue
The issue is the startling climate changes that have and undoubtedly continue to occur in Northern
Canada. Climate changes are known as weather conditions such as temperature, winds,
precipitation, and others that have been affected over a period of time (GOC, n.d.). The concern with
this is that the earth's climate has a balance between energy that is received and energy that being
dispatched. The intent is to maintain regulated temperatures; instead the issue that has occurred is
disturbances between these two balances (GOC, n.d.). Changes in the climate affects the air
temperature and precipitation, the cryosphere, freshwater resources, and ocean climate (Bush, Loder,

Argument Against Trophy Hunting
Trophy Hunting is the act of killing animals to use its parts for decoration like its skin, skull, or
horns. It has been around for hundreds of years, used by the French since the 1800's. Trophy
Hunting is a very controversial concept, although some think it just drives species down to
extinction or endangerment, others think it helps conservation since the money from the hunts will
go towards conservation efforts. Despite the idea that money from the hunts goes towards larger
conservation efforts, it usually doesn't help the population of endangered species at all; it just drives
the population down more so Trophy Hunting should be banned. To start out with, Grizzly Bears are
the main trophy animal to hunters living in the United States, ... Show more content on

Trophy Hunters don't always hunt the endangered species; they also hunt species that are
overpopulated so the population of that species can stay under control. Dr. Michael H Knight and
Dr. Richard Emslie, the chairman and the scientific officer of IUCN SSC African Rhino Specialist
Group state "the killing of two old white rhino in 2012 paid for 49% of a $377,000 high–tech
security fence"(Knight, Emslie). The hunt helped the reserve pay for a fence that could save the
animals on the reserve from many dangers like poachers. Also, the rhinos that were killed were old.
Since the rhinos were old, they might not have been able to fend for themselves anymore so killing
the old ones were the best choice and because the hunters took two of these rhinos lives, they caused
all the other rhinos on the reserve to now have protection. According to Jada F. Smith, a news article
writer for the New York Times says "we found many troubling examples of funds' either being
diverted from their purpose or not being dedicated to conservation in the first place"(Smith). This is
why we have the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. It makes sure that all
the money from trophy hunting gets dedicated to a cause that helps protect endangered animals.
Even if we didn't have that organization and the hunters didn't pay, then they wouldn't be able to
hunt the species they're going after. Trophy hunting can help with many things concerning
conservation and protection of an endangered species if it's done the right

Oil Is Destroying The Environment !
Oil Is Destroying the Environment! – Argument Essay for the Use of Nuclear Fusion By: Bryanna
Bergevin Oil has been used for centuries as the main source of energy in this country. It has been
valued very high from that because it is very hard to find, and there 's a limit of how much people
can use. What if there was a time where this country could run out of oil? That wouldn 't allow
society to function properly, because of the rate were using oil now. The amount of oil burned also
causes a huge amount of pollution in the air, possible global warming and causes people to even
have to wear face masks in high–populated areas in hopes to not breathe in the toxic smog that could
damage respiratory systems and cause many health problems. There has also been impeccable
damage to the oceans and forests, destroying the wildlife. This crisis may not affect society so much
now, but there is only so much time before it gets much worse. A quote from David Suzuki states "If
we want to address global warming, along with the other environmental problems associated with
our continued rush to burn our precious fossil fuels as quickly as possible, we must learn to use our
resources more wisely, kick our addiction, and quickly start turning to sources of energy that have
fewer negative impacts." (Suzuki, Sept 12, blog post) this quote states that people are using valued
resources of oil in the wrong way, and how it is causing problems in the environment. Now should

Canada And Climate Change Essay
Germanwatch research Indicates that Canada is the eight largest carbon dioxide producer in the
world. According to their recent data, Canada was one of the biggest emitters of carbon dioxide,
which is around 1.67 percent of global Co2 emissions in 2015
(Burck, J., Marten, F., & Bals, C., 2015, December).
In 1997, The Kyoto Protocol was adopted to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas
emissions (EPA, n.d.). In spite of the international treaty, half of participating nations, including
Canada failed to reducing its Co2 emissions (Clark, D., 2012, November 26).
Whether climate change occurred by human activities or naturally accruing phenomenon is a
debatable issue. However, it may safely be said releasing carbon dioxide is one of the main reasons
for climate change. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels from using transportation
and maintaining agriculture are major contributions of greenhouse gases emissions, which lead to
climate change. They can be solved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. ... Show more content

The Role Of Climate Change In Canada

  • 1. The Role Of Climate Change In Canada Climate change has become the most serious global environmental threat with sides of people who do not believe it exists and people who are actually aware. The release of greenhouse gases such as carbon and methane into the atmosphere has been known to be one of the major causes of climate change. Scientists explain that these emissions must drastically reduce to avoid a 2°C rise in average global temperature. Therefore different countries have made policies and ways to reduce the production of these gases and Canada is one of them. Canada ranks 15th out of 17 countries for greenhouse gas emissions per capita.Canada's per capita decreased by nearly 5% between 1990 and 2010 while the total GHG emissions in Canada grew by 17%. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Electricity generation is Canada's fourth–largest source of greenhouse gas. When it comes to controlling the emission that comes from electricity generation; most provinces in Canada are already opting out of the coal phase to provide cleaner energy. The burning of firewood to create energy releases CO2 into the atmosphere thereby introducing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.therefore introducing approaches to electricity such as increasing the amount of electricity generated from renewable sources; connecting clean power with places that need it and modernising electrical system could bring Canada to its goal by at least 5% to 15%. New rules that help to control emissions from an electrical sector that is burning natural gases should also be implemented. the government Could also control greenhouse gas emission by mandating the carbon pricing policy. Carbon pricing charges industries and corporations that emit CO2 for their emissions. This limits their emissions by instituting a price charge and encourage companies and consumers from burning fossil fuel and find alternative ways that are efficient for their business. Carbon pricing has been known to be the best tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions since most of the gases released into the atmosphere are carbon. Carbon pricing helps to fight climate change and it provides job opportunity in creating clean energy. the growing population is also a discussable topic in climate change that could be really hard to control due to the fact that as the population increases; the demand for products that release this toxic gases would also increase. The government could control this by finding alternative ways to produce these commodities without introducing so much carbon or methane into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Global Warming Will Damage The Wildlife And Environment Since the industrial revolution, greenhouse gas emissions, namely carbon dioxide, have been on the rise. Greenhouse gases are generally created when fossil fuels are burned. Many daily activities require burning fossil fuels–warming houses, driving cars, and using electricity. As written in Horizons, Canada emits some of the most greenhouse gases globally, and will be especially susceptible given its latitude (Cranny et al. 17). Global warming will damage the wildlife and environment. "Humans depend on the environment and adapt to it, but they also change it dramatically to suit their needs and wants," (Cranny et al. 13). Although fossil fuels are burning at an increased rate, there are ways to reduce emissions–a carbon tax or a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A tax simply puts a price on the amount they pollute. An article in the Huffington Post written April 12, 2014, updated March 5, 2015, by Kenneth P. Green, discusses the implications of a carbon tax. The article is valuable since it looks at many aspects in which a carbon tax can be positive and negative; however, it does not include public opinions and what citizens think of carbon taxes. It is reliable since it offers a wide range of perspectives and originates from a source that is very proficient in the field of environmental studies. Green is a writer who has studied about climate for many years, meaning his opinions are well built due to his expertise. One interesting thing to take away from the article is the discussion of the reason for a carbon tax. According to the article, Canada only emitted 1.8% of the world's greenhouse gases in 2012 (in contrast to the Horizons textbook) – is there then any point in reducing emissions? Even if Canada reduced emissions largely, it seems the effect worldwide would not be drastic. The article then makes the point that, "If it isn 't about environmental protection, essentially it is about changing people 's behaviours in ways that drive them away from activities that produce greenhouse gas emissions." A national carbon tax will affect Canadians in different ways–transportation, energy, clothing, and food prices would rise with the addition of a carbon tax. Often carbon taxes are ... • 7. Animal Testing in the Cosmetic Industry: An Increasingly... Animal testing has become an increasingly controversial issue since the 1980s. This has been the case especially in the cosmetics industry, where esthetic value rather than necessity is at the core of the industry. Since information regarding the often unnecessarily cruel practice of animal testing has become public knowledge, many activist groups have targeted the industry to pressure manufacturers into stopping practices that have been deemed unacceptable. While some of these efforts have met with some success, many cosmetic companies still do use animal testing in a somewhat covert way, despite public claims that this is not the case. Another concern for activists is the harmful chemicals in cosmetics. These are marketed to a largely uninformed public. Some of these substances are even claimed to cause various types of cancer, such as breast cancer in women. Activist groups therefore worked to raise public awareness of a largely unregulated industry in which especially giant companies have concealed their unethical practices in order to promote sales. Cornelia Dum's website (2013) lists several activists that have put pressure on the industry to change its practices. The David Suzuki Foundation, for example, published an 2010 report providing an overview of toxic chemical products in commonly used cosmetics. Many of these are also proven to be harmful to the environment. The purpose of the report is to stimulate better regulation and more accurate labeling of cosmetics. ... • 9. Walter Moss An Age Of Progress Analysis Today, most people take electricity for granted, especially in the United States and other developed countries of the world. According to Walter Moss in his book, An Age of Progress?, Clashing Twentieth–Century Global Forces, during the twentieth century, perhaps no other technological advancement, even the automobile, affected the people of the world more than electricity. Electricity would become the foundation for the development of new technological advancements in industries such as agriculture, health and science, environment, and technology. Production and consumption in all these industries would continue to rise throughout the century with reliance on electricity to flourish. The widespread use of electricity started towards the end of the nineteenth century. At first electricity, both in the United States and abroad, was used primarily for lighting streets, operating public transit, and by stores, restaurants, and other commercial and industrial enterprises. The use of oil and candles were still the typical way many people lit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The passing of laws like the Clean Water Act of 1972 that took steps to insure the increased use of fertilizers and pesticides would not end up in the waterways that so many people rely on for consumption and in the agriculture world of farming. • 11. Climate Change In Canada Essay Introduction In the words of Barack Obama, "climate change is no longer some far–off problem; it is happening here, it is happening now." (J. S. World Economic Forum, 2015) This global phenomenon is causing many problems around the world and is affecting both developed countries like Canada and other countries in the process of developing. This report investigates how climate change can pose significant impacts on all countries despite economic stability. Places like Canada are affected by the severe storms and drastic changes in weather and these changes can hurt the environment and the economy. They can also pose threats to crop production and public health. Climate change can also hurt the developmental progression of low–income countries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The potential harm that climate change could have in Canada is concerning because Canada has one of the most diverse landscapes which is host to a countless number of species and ecosystems that are examples of "at–risk habitats" (David Suzuki Foundation, 2017). Natural resources Canada believes that climate change will affect many of the forests in Canada in a range of complex ways. These affects include changes in plant mortality, disturbance in plant growth and distribution. These impacts are cumulative and can increase insect vulnerability or cause more wildfires. These problems can weaken the plant population and increase their chances of being disease–prone or attacked by insects. Some habitats may disappear, because of changing weather patterns. Many forestry–dependant communities and aboriginal communities will be affected and loss in their wood supply like timber would hinder their economic strength and harvesting potential (Natural resources Canada, 2017). In the Atlantic, the affects of climate change would result in an increase of weather inconsistency. The region may face more storm events, storm intensity, rising sea levels and coastal erosion. Since much of the Canadian population lives in costal regions this can have grave implications. It can affect the socio economic–well being of Atlantic communities in vital infrastructure, and industries like fishery and tourism (Climate Action Network, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Global Warming And Its Effects On Our Communities, Our... In this day and age, problems like global warming, widespread fossil fuel use, and high carbon emissions are "having significant and harmful effects on our communities, our health, and our climate" (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014). "To limit [this], the world is going to have to get a lot better at using energy smartly" (Hope, 2014). One such way is by reducing the amount of energy we consume or waste on a daily basis; in other words, being more energy efficient. Energy Efficiency is "using less energy to provide the same service." Something is more energy efficient if it delivers maximum production for less energy input. For example, energy efficient microwaves provide the same service as conventional ones however they require "30 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More than half of these greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide which is released during the burning of fossil fuels. However, by using less energy and committing to energy efficiency (i.e. driving electric or hybrid type vehicles, creating a lower demand for energy, buying energy efficient appliances), we can reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to be burned and in turn, stop global warming or climate change. In addition to that, being energy efficient in homes and buying energy efficient appliances can significantly benefit one's pocket. Simple things like "replacing old incandescent light bulbs with CFL or LED lights can save one up to 30–80% on energy bills", and buying "Energy Star appliances can save one up to 30% on electricity bills" annually (Alliance to Save Energy, 2012). Also, simple daily tasks done in a different way (more efficiently), such as washing clothes in cold water or keeping one's tires inflated, could bring up to $60 of savings annually (Alliance to save Energy, 2012). These small things done to promote efficiency at home and at work help cities and countries save on a bigger level. For example, America, the number one GHG emitter, saved more than $500 billion in energy costs by using 56% less energy; that's enough to power 12 states for a year (Alliance to save Energy, 2012). That money that would have been spent on energy could now be spent on improving energy efficiency by building energy efficient buildings, educating about consuming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nowhere on the packaging of the product does it mention a single word of caution about the ingredients present in the shampoo, but it does proudly display an award it won from 2011. Although the price of $3.99 is unbeatable for consumers looking for some cheap shampoo, consumers need to realize the impact these ingredients can have on their bodies and the environment – a cheap shampoo in the present could have a severe impact in the future, and those $3.99 bottles of shampoo could turn into $10,000 a month for cancer treatment or higher taxes to attempt cleaning up the environment of the toxins these products leave behind (Nicastro). • 17. Reducing Carbon Emissions By Implementing A Cap And Trade... Introduction This article states that Ontario is preparing to aim at reducing carbon emissions by implementing a cap–and–trade system which claims to "put a price on everything from industrial emissions to gasoline and natural gas". By explaining how the cap–and–trade system works to cut back the carbon emissions in industries operating, this article claims that this system will limit carbon emissions by making companies to purchase permits which are called allocations from the government to emit carbon. Cap on gasoline and natural gas means consumers will have to pay for the costs, which forces consumers to behave environmental friendly as well. By implementing cap– and–trade systems, sectors including heavy industry, transportation fuels, and electricity generation would fall under the cap, while some other systems for example Quebec's sectors are not under cap. In opposing to this exception, the experts hold the opinion that cap–and–trade systems should be spread "as large a constituency as possible" (Morrow 2015). Meanwhile, there will be big polluters such as long suffered manufactory may suffer from possible breaks. Although there will be big polluters that can become candidates of breakers, the government will seek to protect them from the full cost from this policy by giving industries up to 100 percent of their allocations for free for the first four years of this program. Persuasive Speech: Genetically Modified Food We all enjoy a cold glass of milk with homemade cookies, a refreshing pop on a hot summer day, and a juicy cob of corn in the summer months. But, do we ever wonder what is really in our food? Because genetically modified foods do not have to be labeled, you will likely never know if the food you are consuming is genetically modified. As a fellow member of the Organic Consumers Association, I am eager to inform you of why genetically modified food is an issue that we must work to minimize or perhaps even abolish. John Robbins, author of The Food Revolution states that "if genetically engineered plants were designed to reverse world hunger, you would expect them to bring higher yields. But there is increasing evidence that they do just the opposite". Numerous studies have shown that GM crops do not have a higher yield production, but in fact have at times shown a lower outcome. In 2000, "research done by the University of Nebraska found the yields of GE soybeans were six to eleven percent lower than conventional plants" (Robbins). Evidence that GM foods are not the answer to world hunger continues to pile up. Former US EPA and US FDA biotech specialist Dr. Doug Gurian–Sherman acknowledges that GM crops are not beneficial to solving world hunger: "as of this year [2008], there are no commercialized GM crops that inherently increase yield. Similarly, there are no GM crops on the market that were engineered to resist drought, reduce fertilizer pollution or save soil. Not one" ("10 Reasons Why we don't Need GM Foods"). • 21. Controversial Hunting What goes through the minds of people when they think about trophy hunting? Hunting is the act of pursuing and killing live animals for food, recreation, or trade. Early human civilizations relied on hunting for subsistence. As humans and civilizations evolved, so did hunting. Hunting became a sport rather than a necessity. People who are for hunting claim that it helps control wildlife populations, whereas people against it believe that trophy hunting will lead to the extinction of certain animals. This paper will examine viewpoint one, two, and my viewpoint on trophy hunting being banned or not. To begin with, viewpoint one believes trophy hunting serves no purpose and is contributing to the eradication of species. For starters, grizzly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Specifically, trophy hunting could harm the environment and the entire species of the animal killed. Firstly, grizzly bears help the environment and other animals in the rainforest. For example, David Suzuki talks about how grizzlies bring salmon, along with nutrients from the ocean in the salmon, into the rainforest. This leaves the carcass of the salmon for other animals and the nutrients in the salmon for the fertilization of the rainforest (Suzuki). Therefore, trophy hunting grizzlies harms more than just the one bear the hunter killed. Secondly, illegal markets caused a rise in hunting, leading to more animals being killed to be sold. For instance, Richard Emslie and Michael Knight report that "pseudo–hunters" would get permits to hunt rhinos and sell their horns. "This caused a temporary peak in hunting applications" (Emslie). Therefore, the hunting of animals caused illegal markets to pop up, in which caused more people to hunt. Thirdly, some animals are already facing threats without hunters. To illustrate, Suzuki, talking about grizzly bears, says "they already face threats from habitat loss, damage and fragmentation; cascading effects of salmon collapse and climate change; and death from poaching." Hence, hunting only furthers problems animals have. For all these reasons, trophy hunting is harming the environment and other animals, plus the ones they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example: global warming can be a part of climate change because the weather changes and the heat increase very slowly. Climate change is becoming a huge problem and is affecting the world's ecosystems and communities. The world could become one huge oven or it won't. Nobody knows. The Impacts of Climate Change Some of the impacts of climate change are that severe thunderstorms and extreme weather events like a drought, etc. Can happen. Which can ruin certain parts in our community. One of the biggest worries that climate change has developed is how our water recourses can be affected and how there may be some difficulties to gain access to water/clean water (David Suzuki foundation, 2017). The forests in Canada are expected to be the most vulnerable to climate change these days. So, we really have to watch out for our trees and nature. It is easy to overlook the environmental impacts of our food because it is spread across different varieties of species. From plants to animals, from production to transportation, from hunting to growing food, all of these have big impacts on the world today. How does dairy production effect the environment? Why is milk processed? Milk is a nutritious food that has a short shelf–life and needs to be handled carefully. Milk is highly perishable because it is an excellent place for the growth of microorganisms, mostly bacterial pathogens. These pathogens can cause spoilage and diseases. Milk processing conserves milk for days, weeks or months and it also helps to reduce food–borne illness (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2016). The majority of milk is thermally processed at least once during its manufacture. Energy input and the increased resources needed to clean the spoiled heat exchangers are major parts of this process and the remaining plant processing equipment. Cleaning also has an impact on energy use and waste generation. Using more chemicals in the cleaning process increases the global waste production, but makes it less costly and takes less time to clean it. The manufacture of polyethylene or aluminum for packaging is the cause of the highest solid waste in the raw material production stage. Water use is seen as both the consumption and quality of waste and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

David Suzuki Essay David Suzuki Introduction Challenge means 'A task or situation that tests someone's abilities' (Google Dictionary) and David Suzuki has experienced such tests many times in his life. David was born in Vancouver on the 24th of March 1936. He is a third generation Canadian. His grandparents were from Japan and his many life challenges were due to his nationality because of the attack in Pearl Harbour brought upon by Japan. Because of David's nationality, he, his parents and his three sisters were taken to an internment camp where is troubles began. But despite all of his troubles David went on to become the "greatest living Canadian" (National Review of Medicine, 2008). Review David Suzuki has been a very successful environmentalist ... Strengths When David was young his father forced him to learn how to publicly speak because his father believed that all Asian people are shy and don't like to speak publicly. So his father would make David write a speech about a particular subject and give David a week to learn it. He would then take him down to the basement and make David tell the speech to him. David would then have to tell the speech to him every night after that until it was perfect. Even though David hated this at the time he now is very grateful to his father for this invaluable skill. Public speaking is now one of David's most valuable assets because without it he would not have been able to tell his message to the world. David is now a well renowned environmental speaker and environmentalist. But speaking is not the main reason why he is such a well–known environmentalist, determination is the key. Despite all of his troubles David Suzuki has pushed through and made the world know his beliefs and is determined to make a change in the world he calls home. Impacts on Others After listening to one of David Suzuki's inspirational speeches many people feel determined to follow his lead in his environmental battle and 'to take on the challenges that lie ahead' (Marghhaniti, 2007). • 39. Ecological Footprint In Canada Introduction In order to preserve Canada's natural capital, it is imperative to improve Canada's ecological footprint. A country's ecological footprint consists of that country's impact on their environment via their use of resources2. Canada has a small population which results in a much lower ecological footprint than countries with bigger populations¬6. Canada's total ecological footprint is 224 global hectares (gha)6. This is comparable to the United States with a total ecological footprint of 2.3 billion gha, China with 2.9 billion gha and India with 1.1 billion gha6. This does not mean that Canada is better at preserving natural capital than these other countries6. Canada's per capita ecological footprint is 6.4gha6. The University of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the largest contributors to a high ecological footprint is related to personal transportation and the construction, maintenance and operations of buildings3. When more people are living in an area, the amount of energy and transportation needed decreases and so does the area's ecological footprint3. This occurs because as walking increases, the amount of personal driving decreases. Another way Vancouver is working to reduce its ecological footprint is by protecting land in the "Green Zone"7. About 60% of the region's land is protected7. This includes agricultural land, watersheds, and natural and recreational areas7. These "Green Zones" will limit access and help preserve the region's natural capital. The David Suzuki Foundation proposed a South Coast Conservation Program in order to "conserve and restore at risk species and ecosystems on the British Columbia South Coast"9. The projects main focus is to preserve ecosystems and maintain biodiversity9. These are essential components in improving natural capital. The Effects Of Global Warming On The Ocean Temperature Indicators: Ocean temperature Since 1970 the ocean temperature has been increasing at an unprecedented rate, this is indicating accelerated climate change as the water is heating along with the globe. Sea level The glaciers in Greenland and the arctic are melting due to the rising temperature causing the water level to rise. Ice surface area The ice surface across the globe is receding at an alarming rate year after year, as the water and globe warm the ice is not able to stay frozen. Increased droughts Over the period from 2000 through 2013, roughly 20 to 70 percent of the U.S. land area experienced conditions that were at least abnormally dry at any given time. Extreme climate events On average, total annual precipitation has increased over land areas in the United States and worldwide. Positives: Global warming is causing a decrease in total ice surface area, meaning that ships can pass through areas previously not possible to travel through. Such as the NorthWest Passage through Canada's frozen north which will become available for sea transportation. Its existence could mean larger ships, particularly oil tankers too big for the Panama Canal, which have to go around the southern tip of South America, would have a shorter trip between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at their disposal, thus increasing efficiency and lowering costs of water transport throughout the world. In fact, it is also necessary for governmental bodies to become involved in promoting localized food such as policies and labelling laws that encourage healthier eating and food re–localization. In addition, regulations to foster sustainable food production are essential. Moreover, in the movie Cuban, the Accidental Revolution, David Suzuki, introduces how the government's vision becomes one with the farmers, that there is a possibility for the industrial food system to work together. For example, Cuban agronomists describe the benefits of crop rotation for soil health, while Cuban farmers express pleasure with the relative productivity and profitability of their ecological and somehow newly industrialized farming systems. By inventing a new way to create food and working with nature, profit is gained and diversity is generated leading the country to possess the largest national program in sustainable agriculture. With the government's assistance, farmers learn to do more with less and growing food as a community becomes more a passion that profits. It is not the entire answer to the total agriculture problems, but breeding new crops from native plants selected from nature's abundance and simulating the resettlement botanical complexity of a region should make it easier to solve many agricultural problems (40). • 54. Eco Fiscal Policies And Carbon Pricing Policies In the second evening lecture, Elizabeth Beale spoke about eco–fiscal policies with a focus on carbon pricing. According to Beale, increasing carbon emissions are not only harmful to the environment but also create several negative externalities such as damaging crops and higher health costs. For this reason, carbon pricing would help to shift these costs back to those who are responsible. Beale proposes two options for carbon pricing,, a carbon tax or a cap–and–trade system. A carbon tax is simpler as the government sets a price for greenhouse gas emissions. A cap–and– trade system is more complex as allowable emissions are capped, and then the government distributes emissions permits, which are tradable. Beale claimed that no one system is more superior than the other, especially as the differences between the two get blurred as more jurisdictions are adopting more blended systems. Beale concluded her lecture by looking at the current carbon pricing policies implemented throughout Canada. In British Columbia, a carbon tax of $30/tonne was implemented in 2008, which caused fuel use to drop by 16% from 2008 to 2013. In Quebec a cap–and–trade system was implemented in 2012 that covered 85% of emissions with the goal to reduce emissions to 25% below 1990 levels by 2020. However, despite the action on carbon pricing in these provinces, the Atlantic Canadian provinces have yet to implement any type of policy. However, with the influx of people's wants come the consequences of these species are decreasing in populations around the world due to the causes and practices of human fishing. As stated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), there were an estimated 50% decline worldwide of salmon over the last twenty years. Several sources play a factor in the huge amounts of salmon being depleted including overfishing, loss of habitat, and even dams. Since the late 1900s, other ways of reversing what was happening to populations were being proposed and one new technical approach to re–populate the salmon fish exponentially was known as salmon farming, but the process brought more problems to the salmon species then there were good. Before the practice of fish farming even came to play, other factors were already contributing to the decrease in salmon species. Overfishing is one major reason to why there is low levels of salmon because of the immense demands of customers and in order to reach the supply for them, individuals and large companies of boats are taking in these fish in vast numbers with certain ways of innovative fishing. These include using longline, where there is an extended line that are made up of hooks, and nets that are spread across an area where fish may be. Not only do these styles of fishing catch hundreds of salmon but they often catch bycatch as well that affect all other populations of fish and even foods of what the salmon eats like shrimp. Two other ways that are affecting salmon involve the loss of its habitat and the uses of water–powered dams which are part of the methods of affecting the environment. The loss of habitat comprises of pollution in and around the area of freshwater, including chemical waste from industrial sites and the change in the flow of rivers due to hydroelectric dams that favor the human population needs. As a result of these obstacles and barriers, flowing waters have a lack of nutrients and can reduce the diversity of the freshwater environment which could lead to low resources of food for the salmon. It has been around for hundreds of years, used by the French since the 1800's. Trophy Hunters don't always hunt the endangered species; they also hunt species that are overpopulated so the population of that species can stay under control. Dr. Michael H Knight and Dr. Richard Emslie, the chairman and the scientific officer of IUCN SSC African Rhino Specialist Group state "the killing of two old white rhino in 2012 paid for 49% of a $377,000 high–tech security fence"(Knight, Emslie). The hunt helped the reserve pay for a fence that could save the animals on the reserve from many dangers like poachers. Also, the rhinos that were killed were old. Since the rhinos were old, they might not have been able to fend for themselves anymore so killing the old ones were the best choice and because the hunters took two of these rhinos lives, they caused all the other rhinos on the reserve to now have protection. According to Jada F. Smith, a news article writer for the New York Times says "we found many troubling examples of funds' either being diverted from their purpose or not being dedicated to conservation in the first place"(Smith). This is why we have the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. It makes sure that all the money from trophy hunting gets dedicated to a cause that helps protect endangered animals.
