Editor's Notes
The music video I choose to analyse was Taylor Swifts music video, Shake It Off.
In the music video, the representation is that all the actors and the singer are in their teens and twenties. This can be interpreted in that youthful people have more fun, perhaps over middle aged people or pensioners. There was no children in the video, which was surprising, as childhood is associated with having fun. But the songs target audience was of teenagers, and people in their twenties. That’s why the actors are of that age. There was also a scene where the actors and singer rein act a high school cheer (cheerleading), which emphasises upon being younger is associating with having more fun.
The song is sung by a female, how ever the song is not gender specific. Taylor Swift does not conform to gender identifies clothing as well. As one minute she is wearing a ballerina costume, stereotypically feminine. To then wearing tracksuit bottoms, chains and a snapback, stereotypically masculine.
Additionally the video does not conform as to which genders tend to do ballet, as there are male dancers as well.
The main ethnicity represented in the music video is Caucasian, the singer herself is Caucasian; so quite possibly it is to blend the actors in. However there are African-Americans in the music video, this is a representation of the cultures in Americas demographic. How there is a large proportion of African-Americans. Additionally there is not a lot of Asian, Afro-Caribbean and Hispanic representation in the video. Perhaps due to there low representation in America Media excitingly.
Both of these representations are not clearly highlighted or shown within the music video.
There was no representation of Gay, Lesbian and Transgender people within the music video. This may be because the songs does not target them issues or as like ethnicity, they do not make up the norm and majority in media already.
There was a little representation of Social Class within the music video, as for e.g. there was a break dance scene where everyone dressed looked like they were from the .streets’. Which by association, the people tend to be of lower class. Also with the ballet sequences, ballet by association is linked to upper class, as a small majority of people who take up ballet are from upper class.
