2.  There is a 89% global literacy rate for adult males
while there is only a 80% literacy rate for adult females
 Adult literacy rates are significantly lower in the Arab
States, hovering at 75% and West Asia and Africa, at
63% for both.
 In countries like Niger and Mali, the literacy rates are
at 36.5 % and 44.3%

7.  Vision and Goal:
 “We envision a world in which all children can pursue a
quality education, reach their full potential and contribute
to their community and the world. To achieve this goal, we
focus on two areas where we believe we can have the
greatest impact: literacy and gender equality in
education. We work in collaboration with communities
and local governments across Asia and Africa to develop
literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school
children, and support girls to complete secondary school
with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and
beyond.

8.  Established late 1999 by John Wood and Dinesh
Shrestha, a former overworked Microsoft executive
and his Nepali co-founder.
 Inspiration: Visited a school in a rural Nepalese village,
seeing the dismal conditions and lack of books.
 Returned after a year with eight donkeys’ load worht of
books for the children.

 Opened 1000th Library in Siem Reap, Cambodia
 Launched operations in Sri Lanka to help community
rebuild
