TYPES OF
METASOMATISM

Metasomatism can be divided on two basis:
• On the basis of metasomatic processes
• On the basis of geological position
ON THE BASIS OF METASOMATIC PROCESS
Diffusional metasomatism
• It takes place by the diffusion of a solute through a
stagnant solution (fluid).
• The driving force of diffusion is the chemical potential (or
chemical activity) gradients in the rock-pore solution.
• Diffusional metasomatic rocks form rather thinly zoned
bodies (rims) along cracks, veins, and contact surfaces .
• The composition of minerals may vary gradually across
each metasomatic zone
ON THE BASIS OF METASOMATIC PROCESS
Infiltrational metasomatism
• It takes place by the transfer of material in solution,
infiltrating through the host rocks.
• The driving force is the pressure and concentration
gradients between the infiltrating and rock-pore
solutions.
• Infiltrational metasomatic rocks generally occupy much
greater volumes.
ON THE BASIS OF GEOLOGICAL POSITION
 Autometasomatism
• It is a type of metasomatism that occurs at the top of magmatic bodies during the
early postmagmatic stage.
• Typical autometasomatic processes, for example, are albitisation in granitic
plutons and serpentinisation of ultramafic rocks.
• Korzhinskii (1953) stressed the relation of metasomatism to magmatism and distinguished two
metasomatic stages namely:
 metasomatism of the magmatic stage is connected with fluids emanating from a
liquid magma body and metasomatising the solid host rocks.
 metasomatism of the postmagmatic stage are retrogressive and are connected
with hydrothermal solutions both emanating from the cooling magma and/or other
heated exogenic sources, due for instance to the mixing of juvenile water with
meteoric water.
 Contact metasomatism
• It is a type of metasomatism that occurs at or near to the contact between
a magmatic body and another rock.
• It may occur at various stages in the magmatic evolution.
• Endocontact zones develop by replacement of the magmatic rocks and
exocontact zones are formed by replacement of the host rocks.
 Boundary metasomatism
• It is a type of metasomatism that occurs at the contact between two rock
types.
 Bimetasomatism
• It is a variety of the contact metasomatism, which causes replacement of
both the rocks in contact due to two-way diffusion of different components
across the contact.
 Near-vein metasomatism
• It is a type of diffusional metasomatism, which forms symmetrical
metasomatic zonation on either side of an infiltrational metasomatic vein
(or a vein infilling).
 Regional metasomatism
• it occupies great areas developing in various geological situations.
• It commonly forms alkaline metasomatic rocks during the magmatic and
early postmagmatic stages.
• Regional metasomatic rocks at moderate and even shallow depths form
the outer zones of metasomatic rock associations accompanying ore
deposits (near-ore) such as greisens, quartz-sericite rocks, propylites, and
some others.
Classification of metasomatic rocks on the
basis of specific petrogenetic process
• Fenite - a high-temperature metasomatic rock characterised by the
presence of alkali feldspar, sodic amphibole and sodic pyroxene.
.
• Fenites are formed mainly or completely during the magmatic stage by
silica-undersaturated alkaline magmatic fluids.
• The mass transport will modify the initial rock composition (the rocks have
usually significantly less alkalis than the magmas and are silicasaturated)
towards the magma composition through a series of metasomatic zones.
• This usually involves the elimination of free quartz (desilication) and the
development of alkali mineral phases.
• occur on the metre- to kilometre- scale.
• Indian example :-Metasomatic feldspar rocks (potash fenites) associated
with the fluorite deposits and carbonatites of Amba Dongar, Gujarat, India
Greisens - a medium-temperature metasomatic rock characterised by the
presence of quartz and white mica, commonly with topaz, fluorite and tourmaline.
•Typically greisens may host Be, W, Mo, Sn, and Ta mineralisation.
•In general, greisen systems evolve by decreasing alkali/H+ ratios, resulting in the
destabilisation of K-feldspar, plagioclase, and micas. This leads to the greisen stage
sensu stricto with the replacement of these minerals by quartz and white mica
(muscovite and/or phengite).
•Greisen in most cases formed inside the granitic pluton itself .
Greisen vein cutting a granite . Greisen consists of quartz and muscovite replacing feldspar of the granite
adjacent to a narrow vein that contains black tourmaline and some cassiterite (tin oxide).
Greisen bordered veins at Cligga Head; Cornwall, UK.
Indian example -
Degana tungsten deposit, Balda tungsten deposit and Sewariya tungsten prospect
in Rajsthan.
plagioclase and mica are the principal “carriers of rare metals”, considered the
leaching of the metallic elements from their original sites in the lattices of these
rock-forming minerals to have occurred during greisenisation processes by virtue of
the presence of F and Cl species in the fluids.
The conversion of biotite to muscovite is of fundamental importance for the genesis
of Sn-W deposits, because muscovite is an “excellent hosts” for elements such as Sn, W,
and Mo.
• Skarn is a metasomatic rock formed at the contact between a
silicate rock (or magmatic melt) and a carbonate rock.
• Skarns are very important because they host a great variety of
ores and constitute a distinct class of mineral deposits.
• The process of replacement of carbonate rocks by silicate
minerals, is generally through the addition of silica, as in the
following reaction:
• Skarns are developed at the contact between, plutons and the invaded
country rocks, the latter generally being carbonates.
• The carbonate rocks at and around the contacts of the intrusion are
metamorphosed to marble or calc-silicates, in the case of impure
carbonates.
• Skarn genesis essentially involves isochemical contact metamorphism and
metasomatism (prograde skarns), entirely due to the transfer of heat, fluids,
and metals from a cooling plutonic body to the surrounding wall rocks.
• Skarn alteration systems are typically zoned
• zonation begins with the endoskarn within the intrusion and continues
outwards to the proximal and distal exoskarns that develop in the
surrounding country rocks.
• Indian Example - Major deposits of wollastonite are found in Sirohi,
Udaipur, Dungarpur and Ajmer districts of Rajasthan.
• Deposit of wollastonite in Godha Taluka (Palampur district) and Chhota
Udaipur Taluka (Baroda district) in Gujarat.
Some other metasomatic rocks
• Gumbeite: is a medium to low temperature metasomatic rock mainly
composed of quartz,orthoclase and carbonate. It forms as an alteration of
granodiorite or syenite and is closely associated with W-Cu or Au-U
bearing veins.
• Propylite: is a low to medium temperature metasomatic granofels formed
by the alteration of basic volcanic rocks; low temperature varieties are
principally composed of albite, calcite and chlorite; high-temperature
varieties are composed of epidote, actinolite and biotite. They form at the
postmagmatic stage.
• Beresite : is a low-temperature metasomatic rock characterised by quartz,
sericite, carbonate(ankerite) and pyrite assemblages resulting from the
replacement of both igneous and sedimentary protoliths. It may be
associated with a variety of Au, Au-Ag, Ag-Pb, U ore mineralisations.

Types of metasomatism

  • 2. Metasomatism can be divided on two basis: • On the basis of metasomatic processes • On the basis of geological position
  • 3. ON THE BASIS OF METASOMATIC PROCESS Diffusional metasomatism • It takes place by the diffusion of a solute through a stagnant solution (fluid). • The driving force of diffusion is the chemical potential (or chemical activity) gradients in the rock-pore solution. • Diffusional metasomatic rocks form rather thinly zoned bodies (rims) along cracks, veins, and contact surfaces . • The composition of minerals may vary gradually across each metasomatic zone
  • 4. ON THE BASIS OF METASOMATIC PROCESS Infiltrational metasomatism • It takes place by the transfer of material in solution, infiltrating through the host rocks. • The driving force is the pressure and concentration gradients between the infiltrating and rock-pore solutions. • Infiltrational metasomatic rocks generally occupy much greater volumes.
  • 5. ON THE BASIS OF GEOLOGICAL POSITION  Autometasomatism • It is a type of metasomatism that occurs at the top of magmatic bodies during the early postmagmatic stage. • Typical autometasomatic processes, for example, are albitisation in granitic plutons and serpentinisation of ultramafic rocks. • Korzhinskii (1953) stressed the relation of metasomatism to magmatism and distinguished two metasomatic stages namely:  metasomatism of the magmatic stage is connected with fluids emanating from a liquid magma body and metasomatising the solid host rocks.  metasomatism of the postmagmatic stage are retrogressive and are connected with hydrothermal solutions both emanating from the cooling magma and/or other heated exogenic sources, due for instance to the mixing of juvenile water with meteoric water.
  • 6.  Contact metasomatism • It is a type of metasomatism that occurs at or near to the contact between a magmatic body and another rock. • It may occur at various stages in the magmatic evolution. • Endocontact zones develop by replacement of the magmatic rocks and exocontact zones are formed by replacement of the host rocks.  Boundary metasomatism • It is a type of metasomatism that occurs at the contact between two rock types.  Bimetasomatism • It is a variety of the contact metasomatism, which causes replacement of both the rocks in contact due to two-way diffusion of different components across the contact.
  • 7.  Near-vein metasomatism • It is a type of diffusional metasomatism, which forms symmetrical metasomatic zonation on either side of an infiltrational metasomatic vein (or a vein infilling).  Regional metasomatism • it occupies great areas developing in various geological situations. • It commonly forms alkaline metasomatic rocks during the magmatic and early postmagmatic stages. • Regional metasomatic rocks at moderate and even shallow depths form the outer zones of metasomatic rock associations accompanying ore deposits (near-ore) such as greisens, quartz-sericite rocks, propylites, and some others.

Classification of metasomatic rocks on the basis of specific petrogenetic process • Fenite - a high-temperature metasomatic rock characterised by the presence of alkali feldspar, sodic amphibole and sodic pyroxene. . • Fenites are formed mainly or completely during the magmatic stage by silica-undersaturated alkaline magmatic fluids. • The mass transport will modify the initial rock composition (the rocks have usually significantly less alkalis than the magmas and are silicasaturated) towards the magma composition through a series of metasomatic zones. • This usually involves the elimination of free quartz (desilication) and the development of alkali mineral phases. • occur on the metre- to kilometre- scale. • Indian example :-Metasomatic feldspar rocks (potash fenites) associated with the fluorite deposits and carbonatites of Amba Dongar, Gujarat, India
  • 9. Greisens - a medium-temperature metasomatic rock characterised by the presence of quartz and white mica, commonly with topaz, fluorite and tourmaline. •Typically greisens may host Be, W, Mo, Sn, and Ta mineralisation. •In general, greisen systems evolve by decreasing alkali/H+ ratios, resulting in the destabilisation of K-feldspar, plagioclase, and micas. This leads to the greisen stage sensu stricto with the replacement of these minerals by quartz and white mica (muscovite and/or phengite). •Greisen in most cases formed inside the granitic pluton itself . Greisen vein cutting a granite . Greisen consists of quartz and muscovite replacing feldspar of the granite adjacent to a narrow vein that contains black tourmaline and some cassiterite (tin oxide).
  • 10. Greisen bordered veins at Cligga Head; Cornwall, UK. Indian example - Degana tungsten deposit, Balda tungsten deposit and Sewariya tungsten prospect in Rajsthan. plagioclase and mica are the principal “carriers of rare metals”, considered the leaching of the metallic elements from their original sites in the lattices of these rock-forming minerals to have occurred during greisenisation processes by virtue of the presence of F and Cl species in the fluids. The conversion of biotite to muscovite is of fundamental importance for the genesis of Sn-W deposits, because muscovite is an “excellent hosts” for elements such as Sn, W, and Mo.
  • 11. • Skarn is a metasomatic rock formed at the contact between a silicate rock (or magmatic melt) and a carbonate rock. • Skarns are very important because they host a great variety of ores and constitute a distinct class of mineral deposits. • The process of replacement of carbonate rocks by silicate minerals, is generally through the addition of silica, as in the following reaction:
  • 12. • Skarns are developed at the contact between, plutons and the invaded country rocks, the latter generally being carbonates. • The carbonate rocks at and around the contacts of the intrusion are metamorphosed to marble or calc-silicates, in the case of impure carbonates. • Skarn genesis essentially involves isochemical contact metamorphism and metasomatism (prograde skarns), entirely due to the transfer of heat, fluids, and metals from a cooling plutonic body to the surrounding wall rocks.
  • 13. • Skarn alteration systems are typically zoned • zonation begins with the endoskarn within the intrusion and continues outwards to the proximal and distal exoskarns that develop in the surrounding country rocks. • Indian Example - Major deposits of wollastonite are found in Sirohi, Udaipur, Dungarpur and Ajmer districts of Rajasthan. • Deposit of wollastonite in Godha Taluka (Palampur district) and Chhota Udaipur Taluka (Baroda district) in Gujarat.
  • 14. Some other metasomatic rocks • Gumbeite: is a medium to low temperature metasomatic rock mainly composed of quartz,orthoclase and carbonate. It forms as an alteration of granodiorite or syenite and is closely associated with W-Cu or Au-U bearing veins. • Propylite: is a low to medium temperature metasomatic granofels formed by the alteration of basic volcanic rocks; low temperature varieties are principally composed of albite, calcite and chlorite; high-temperature varieties are composed of epidote, actinolite and biotite. They form at the postmagmatic stage. • Beresite : is a low-temperature metasomatic rock characterised by quartz, sericite, carbonate(ankerite) and pyrite assemblages resulting from the replacement of both igneous and sedimentary protoliths. It may be associated with a variety of Au, Au-Ag, Ag-Pb, U ore mineralisations.
