1. Are the Machines Really Helping Customers in Translation?
Machine translation (MT) is called automated translation. A process by which computer software
google translate is used to translate a text from one language (such as English) to another
(such as Chinese).
The purpose of any translation, be it human or machine assisted, the meaning of a text in
source language must be fully established in the target language. Many whom we know think
translation is far simpler than what we all think, don’t know that it is a complex process.
Translation is not a mere word­for­word translation. A translator must understand, interpret and
analyze all of the context in the text and know how each word may influence the user group and
how to make it more relevant. This requires extensive expertise in grammar, syntax (sentence
structure), semantics (meanings), etc., in the source and target languages, as well as familiarity
with different profiles of the user group like the Demographic, Psychographic and Geographic
profile of the audience.
In today’s translation world the greater challenge lies in how machine translation can produce
publishable quality translations with minimum influence of human talent. The idea is not only to
keep the cost under control and also to reduce high dependency on individuals who are not
competent enough to deliver compelling translation.
We all should be aware of the share of challenges both Human and Machine Translations have.
For example, no two individual translators can produce identical translations of the same text in
the same language pair, and it may take several rounds of revisions to meet customer
satisfaction.
Many Machine translation companies have introduced several technologies to ensure accuracy
and bring high relevance to the translation by linking millions of bilingual dictionaries for each
language. They have complex rules that brings the translation in target language close to
publishing quality. Are the clients satisfied with this quality? There is a big NO and they still want
the Human Translators to do the proofing.
The Human Translators have very limited scope to perform the proofing with the available
content.
So what is the solution moving forward we see as a translation agency?

2. Machines cannot produce consistent and predictable quality of translation. They can have
grammar rules and cover different domains. You can have a website translated using a machine
or a human resource handbook translated and proofread with a human translator. Using
machine for translating day to day translation requirements like the Emails is big challenge even
today.
