Lesson 1 Materials (Acupuncture)
Lesson Summary: This lesson talks about the art of acupuncture, touching briefly on the
history, and where it originated along with a little bit of its history, why is it used, and is
this something that traditional doctor’s use or at least accept today. As we continue
throughout today we will answer these question, and maybe convince those who have
never tried it to explore the possibilities that acupuncture presents.
Lesson Content:
The history of acupuncture and just where did it originate? (30 minutes)
To begin I would like you to take a trip with me to YouTube and watch a quick video on
This very topic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovT03jFxiaQ (5:27) Now that we
are back let’s take a few minutes to answer any questions you may have. (5 minutes) This
particular practice is known to have originated in China. Which actually requires very
fine needles placed strategically within the body. It is actually thought that this practice
goes back some 4000 years. During this time they could have used sharpened stones,
bones, or even bamboo needles to accomplish this task. The Chinese do get the mass
majority of credit because of how complete their treatments programs were. However, the
Ancient Egyptians, The Bantu, and a few different Eskimos all have left signs they might
have used acupuncture as well. (acos.org, n.d.). (15 minutes) Open the floor to questions
(5 minutes)
Why do people use the practice of acupuncture? (48 minutes)
Once again I would like to start this section with a little field trip to YouTube to watch a
quick video on this topic at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caWnNGZGqrA (4:29)
Now that we know a little more about what acupuncture does do we have any questions
(5 minutes). There really is a multitude of reasons to get this procedure done. I myself
had it performed as I have chronic back pain. I had trouble walking properly, sitting
properly and I really even struggled putting on socks and shoes. Getting this procedure
done really did help if only for the short term. Other reasons could be neck pain, knee
pain, and even stroke (cim.ucsd.edu, 2015). (20 minutes) please join me once again to
view a few more short videos which talk about those issues. The first is located at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWUTjrl4rGc (2:45) for information on neck pain.
Then let’s look at the video located at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUVBnt54Yg4 (4:45) for information on knee pain.
Finally let’s visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPChBRPr_Ro (2:19) to get a look
at acupuncture and stroke victims. Now that we have seen the videos and demonstrations
let’s open the floor to questions and discussions. (10 minutes)
Is acupuncture accepted and prescribed by traditional doctors? (12 minutes)
This used to be more of an issue in the past. I remember when I was told to use
acupuncture my insurance would not cover it, and it was certainly a specialty to say the
least. In my opinion it certainly depends on the doctor in question. However, the fact that
John Hopkins has something on it within their health library is very reassuring to me that
we are heading in the right direction. They do give a few tips when considering this
2. treatment though. They recommend you speak with your doctor to ensure it is right for
you, and they also want you to consider price. Like myself your insurance might not
cover this procedure, and with multiple visits possibly being required it would then come
out of pocket (hopkinsmedicine.org, n.d.). (5 minutes)
The floor again is now open for questions and discussion. (7mins)
