1. Chelsea Cohen
Math Literature Book
Second Grade: M2G1 Students will describe and classify plane
figures( triangles, square, rectangle, trapezoid, quadrilateral, pentagon,
hexagon, and irregular polygon shapes) according to the number of sides
and vertices and the sizes of angles ( right angle, obtuse, acute)
Summary: This story is about a legend of a boy, Little Gopher, who was different from
all the other boys in his tribe. The Shaman told him that he had a different gift of his
2. own and he would be remembered for a different reason. A few years later, a dream
vision came to him and and told him all the ways that he was going to be great among
his people. Then, Little Gopher made brushes, gathered fruits and flowers, and painted
pictures of hunts and dream-visions that the people would always remember.
And even though Little Gopher sometimes wished he was still a
warrior, he was proud and happy that
he painted beautiful pictures for his
people that will always be remembered.
Activity #1
Shapes Sides Vertices
Triangle
Trapezoid
Pentagon
Hexagon
Rectangle
For this activity, students will be helping Little Gopher paint his way back home
using a map and these five shapes: triangle, rectangle, hexagon, trapezoid, and
pentagon. I will give the students clues about the different shapes, and they will draw
the shape with the correct sides and vertices to help Little Gopher find his way home.
Little Gopher’s Map
3. *By the big tree with the red leaves there will be a 5 sided shape
*On top of a rock, there will be a shape with 3 vertices and sides.
Keep going, you have almost helped Little Gopher find his way!!!
*Floating down the stream, there will be a long 4 sided shape that looks like a log....hop
on it until you get to the end of the stream.
* While leaving the stream, you should see a 6 sided shape on your right!
* Walk past the shape and over the hill, here you should see a 4 sided shape whose sides
are not equal!!!
Congratulations!!!! You just helped Little Gopher find his family and friends. What
a great adventure!!!
